Спасибо за урок, Настя! 😊👍 I am experiencing more grammatical confusion concerning the same situation again. Can anyone possibly clarify this? Regarding 19:54: В деревне у меня было много друзей поэтому я был счастлив. (In the village I had a lot of friends, that is why I was happy.) What grammatical case is 'друзей' here? According to Wiktionary it's either genitive or accusative. Thinking about it in English, both seem to fit. Is it genitive in order to comply with 'у меня' (I had lots of friends = possession of friends = genitive case)? Or is it accusative, to answer the question 'what?' (I had what? Answer: lots of friends. = accusative)? Also, what is the grammatical reason that 'счастлив' is in nominative here? Is it because the person speaking is the subject? I was expecting animate accusative, answering the question 'what?' (I was what? Answer: I was happy. The object of happiness - receiving happiness from an external source, as seems to be the case in Russian, like with 'to me there is heat' rather than 'I am hot' in English). Is the absence of a verb here the reason why accusative doesn't apply, because the person cannot be the object of the verb if a verb isn't present? 🤔

I think you have the same trouble that I do… overthinking in Russian. Very easy to do. To your first question, you’re correct… genitive. Много is a trigger for the genitive… a lot OF. A quantity OF something. On the happiness item this is a short-form adjective. Hopefully she’ll cover this.

@@catboy721 Thank you for your reply. 👍 I should probably spend less time trying to analyse everything at this stage, but it's very difficult to avoid. Undoubtedly Nastya will explain these grammatical mysteries eventually. I will still be here when she does!

В винительном падеже есть зависимость от наречия "много" - у меня много друзей. Это не родительный падеж, потому что, определяя родительный падеж, мы проверяем с помощью слова "нет" . И здесь мы не можем сказать "у меня "нет" много друзей.
