Giving my camper van a fresh new look with a DIY roller paint job at home. I use Rustoleum Combi Colour satin finish (RAL 7035 light grey), lots of sand paper and many foam gloss rollers. Not quite finished but please join me for part 2 where I will be finishing off the top half and applying Raptor a tintable truckbed liner on the bottom half to complete the job.
Thanks for watching, please subscribe to stay updated.

Hi, Awsome job , been doing hand painting jobs on vans and cars for 40 yrs so tried them all. Car re-paint, Tractol enamel, Dulux gloss, Hammerite garage door paint, Aldi metal paint, Rustoleum and so on. The big secret is prep, prep, and prep. It's 90 percent prep and 10 percent paint Do the preparation correctly as above and you will get a decent job, the worst you will get is an orange peel job which is no worse than a DIY or cheapo spray job. My latest job is an LDV convoy painted with military satin paint ( satin is more forgiving if you like the finish) even a tar brush would make a Convoy look good LOL. Keep up the good work all you hand painters and save lots and lots of cash.

Hi! I have an important question:)! I live in a mercedes 609 and i really need to paint it. Is it necessary use a 2components vernice or it's fine simply use a 1component vernice??? Im looking for something that can last around 10 years. If is actually possible with a single component vernice which is the best brand? It would be much easier for me going with a 1 component rather then a 2components one.

I did my van in White Satin Rustoleum with a roller. I am happy with the look. Do I need to wet sand it now and buff it or will the look hold up and will it be easy enough to clean when it gets dirt on it if I don't polish or laquer it?

Great video! Thank you for sharing this! I am wondering, on the 3rd coat what did you do about brush marks at that point? Was it very visible or did you sand it back again or leave it
@TurnersWorkshop97

Thanks you! I was planning on flattening back again until smooth and then some finer paper and finishing with polishing compound but wanted to keep the satin finish. So in the end I left it as it is. There’s a slight orange peel like texture all over from the roller and I don’t mind it personally, it’s only noticeable up close 😊

Looks awsome. I was thinking of getting a spraygun for it.. How did it feel going with the rollers?
@TurnersWorkshop97
@TurnersWorkshop97 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks man. If you have the space to spray indoors I would go for that option as it takes a long time to flatten back the paint! Where I live it’s not really feasible to spray outside as I was worried about overspray on neighbours cars...Really easy to roller on though and as long as the vans prepped and keyed up all over the Rustoleum goes on surprisingly well with a roller.

Great video. Lots to ponder. I wonder why most van painters do not use the “Roll and Tip” method used when painting boats? Well done on your project. Thanks for sharing.
@TurnersWorkshop97
@TurnersWorkshop97 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, I did try the roll and tip method for the bonnet and found it was harder to flatten back to get rid of the brush marks so just stuck with rollers in the end 👍🏼

Hey what type of sander and sandpaper did you used to do the initial sanding before the first coat? Also with the flattening back did you use white spirit to do this by hand or just water? Thank you!
@TurnersWorkshop97
@TurnersWorkshop97 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, I used a palm sander with 120grit and 240grit wet and dry paper for the initial key up then 600grit wet and dry paper with water between coats for flattening back the paint 😊

I'm having trouble getting all of the top waxy coat off of the high top of my van in the corners and wavy parts. I'm using 150 grit with a hand sander. Should I just keep at it and try harder or use a different grit? I tried to add a picture so you could see but maybe KZfaq doesn't allow pictures??Thanks for the great video!

Hi, thanks for your comment 👍🏼 is it a rubberised paint you have on there possibly? typical vehicle paints tend to sand fairly easy because they’re hard. I have instagram if you wanted to send picture on there and I can have a look? Ahh thanks it’s no problem, glad you like it!

Hey dude. How did the finished product look ? Too shiny ? And how much paint did you use in the end? I'm gonna do this myself, rust oleum is not easy to get here in the Netherlands so have to buy the good product/amount in the first go.
@TurnersWorkshop97
@TurnersWorkshop97 3 жыл бұрын
Hey man, I was really pleased with the finished look. I got the rustoleum in satin finish so wasn’t really shiny. The bodywork on my van isn’t perfect so I didn’t want the glossy look to show up the imperfections. Overall I used 2 x 2.5litre tins of paint. It covers really well but if you’re doing the sand back and repaint technique to build up the layers it might be worth getting some extra as I only just had enough. Hope it turns out well for you! Good luck!

What ratio did you thin the combicolour to pls mate?
@TurnersWorkshop97
@TurnersWorkshop97 4 жыл бұрын
I used about 10% thinners. Just tried different mixes on the first coat until I found what was applying smoothly without too many runs or bubbles etc. I didn’t measure just approximate.
@Taylor40667
@Taylor40667 3 жыл бұрын
How long did you wait to do the second coat? A day? Did you find 2 coats was more than enough? Thinking of changing the colour scheme on our banana, i see rustoleum do a thinner to for the combi colour is it worth thinning down the first layer? Or putting the first layer on light then the next coat thicker
@TurnersWorkshop97
@TurnersWorkshop97 3 жыл бұрын
The weather was really hot when I did it so only needed a day or 2 before I could flat back between coats. 3 coats all in and they were all thinned down a little with white spirit. The more coats the better, it’s better to build up in thinned coats. It will give a flatter smoother finish and makes it easier to flat back between coats. After 3 coats I was done with it 😂 the good thing about it is you can revisit and refresh the look every now and then. I’ve got to take windscreen out to do some rust work this year so will be touching up around the screen with combi-colour.
@Taylor40667

Turners Workshop ive got the rustoleum paint and rustoleum thinner. But how much thinner is needed? It says use up to maximum 10 vol % Does that meen up to 10% thinner?? Think ill do 5% thinner
@TurnersWorkshop97
@TurnersWorkshop97 3 жыл бұрын
@@Taylor40667 I would say I thinned down with 5-10% white spirit and it applied nicely and dried overnight so I could flatten back the next day. It wasn't an exact thing, just approximate. I think it says no more than 10% because it will be very thin and hard to apply like that, gets everywhere!

I tried this with rust oleum white and it was a disaster. After sanding back and trying again 3 times i still couldn’t get rid of the orange peel textured finish. Even tried different amounts of thinners. Still no joy. Finally had to pay a professional to respray it properly.

You’ll find using coach enamel paint from a reputable manufacturer like paintman paints will achieve the gloss finish you want. Too late now but worth looking up.

How is this holding up? I've heard Rustoleum stays quite soft so is prone to getting marked/scratched quite easily - is this the case or does it harden over time?

Stupid idea painting by hand , in the open air , what about the dust?
@TurnersWorkshop97
@TurnersWorkshop97 3 жыл бұрын
Not really, it’s on a vehicle that is 22 years old and prone to rust... a full respray in a booth would cost many hundreds of pounds on a vehicle this size if not in the thousands. Dust is the least of my worries 😂 rust on the other hand is a problem... thanks for your comment
