Rusty Butcher's Cleaver Knife Restoration

I found this rusted butcher's cleaver and thought it looked like a really good candidate for a restoration project. I'm really happy with how it turned out since this is my first try and any sort of knife making.
I didn't like the original handle design, so I decided to remove the steel ring at the top of the handle and add a third brass rivet to fully secure my new custom made wooden scales instead.
If you think you know what type of wood I made the scales / handle blanks out of, go ahead and guess what they are in the description.
Thanks for watching!

I really liked how you were willing to change tools shaping the handle and admit that your first choice might not have been the best. Also an ex chef for 20+ years I’m even more pleased to see someone call a meat cleaver a meat cleaver. Personally I like some curve on my blade but not quite as much as you have here. I like to be able to nick a cutlet but also separate a loin of beef on the bone. But that’s very subjective, a brilliant restoration, very well done.

Yep...I was right, beautiful workmanship as usual. But why you would use a hacksaw to cut wood when it seems like you have every tool/piece of equipment known to man and know it's wrong is actually very funny and definitely adds to the video. But I guess you had your reason.

Looking on Craigslist earlier today I see a vintage cleaver I think I might want to purchase and make my first attempt at restoring. Imagine my utter shock when I open KZfaq and see in my suggested videos a video of someone restoring THE EXACT SAME CLEAVER.

Btw I’m watching this because I recently came across a vintage F Dick 7x60 made in Germany. It was sold to me by an antique vender with ties to the Newton family and reportedly came right out of Joe Newton’s shed, actually sons shed, or grandsons shed because Joe has been dead a while and his son recently died so yeah got to love those grandchildren. Anyways I am going to try and restore it it doesn’t need much still has the original handle not split just a little rust. Seeing you remove rust with sandpaper well thanks for that.

Solid work. The camera work was clean, nicely edited, you used electrolysis (always a fan favorite), the handle turned out well. I thoroughly enjoyed the video. Side note: you're talented enough, throw in a curve ball video every once in awhile. Something that is completely unlike the others. Be bold. But keep it coming with the usual stuff. I have needs.

Ha, you got me to subscribe. Some of your restorations are something else, but I like where you are going. I see you are learning, along with the rest of us. For instance the handle, you took the time to grind off the brass rods and shape the wood, but ended up cutting a taper on the band saw and cut all that work off anyway. ??? Also, as an aspect to restoration is duplicating some of the methods used to make the peace in the first place, along with eliminating some of the ridiculous bits. You did good tossing the collar, but you didn't "rivet" the brass pins. The spreading out the ends before grinding them smooth will prevent them from working them selves out. Also the gap in the wood long the tang, I would thing filling with epoxy could help protect the metal underneath the wood, from rusting in the future.

You can't tell if it's mahogany, cherry, red oak, or a number of other woods, by the color. You have to look at the grain, the flecs, the rays and the end grain, to see the pores, to properly identify a species of wood. Just my thoughts from Tucson.
