I have a Cold Steel Great Sword that needs this treatment. Sanding and polishing something that large entirely by hand is a pain. It is old and has some minor pitting and I have been using 600 and 1000 grit auto body paper. This sword weighs 7 pounds and is no joke. Absolute monster. I'm going to make a leather covered scabbard...with brass appointments. And until I watched this video I knew that polishing the beast would take longer than building the scabbard. Thank you.

@@SkillsandTrade It was a Christmas gift from a KZfaq friend that I met while trying to discover a new tinder for fire pistons of all things. You want to avoid blurring the lines of the angles. It has a diamond cross section. I had considered a small mouse sander, but I don't think the same attachments and materials are available. As you well know, conventional buffing with regular compounds can be dangerous with even much smaller knives, and as I am disabled, this method facilitates far more control, so again, thank you. Holding a 7 pound hunk of pain in front of a wheel with that many rpm?? Nope. Besides, the guys who built it probably attatched the hilt etc. AFTER this was done😂 I have noticed in my experimentation that various metal polishes including Mothers, Semichrome, Blue Magic and Mcguiars All Metal, leave mysterious black dots on the steel after hand polishing with a terrycloth towel. This is carbon spring tempered battle ready steel that will easily pass the old British proof test. Any idea why that would happen.?? I can remove the spotting with Ballistol or EEZOX. I've been a knife collector and user for 40 years and Ive never seen that happen before. Thank you for your replies.

The hookit pad you have linked doesn't look like it will fit on a drill chuck. It has the threads like a grinder/buffer would use. Am I missing something?

Would you be specific about the process. I can't get alumicut in my area, is there an easy equivalent? Where do you get those pads and are they 6"? If I'm going to polish a bunch of steel, how long will the pads last? Anything else would be excellent. The machete is amazing, now you need a handle to match.

If you can't find Alumicut, WD-40 will work, however Alumicut works better. The pads should last fairly long but will wear out fast on steel. I have links to all my materials in the description if you are interested, and yes they are 6". I know a new handle would nice after being polished. Thanks

This was a great video for me. My sister-in-law passed me my X husband's machete and it's kinda in not so pretty shape so I would like to take this kind of project for mine. Question is I have a new dremel can I use it to sharpen mine or should I get a different tool?
@dragan3290

Easiest way to sharpen a machete is to buy a bastard file.( coarse) you can buy sandpaper and with spray adhesive glue sandpaper onto timber. When sharpen a machete long strokes with you pushing the file away from you on each side. I do 3 strokes and swap. Then one stroke each side. A4 paper cuts are easy. Practice and follow the angle! Easy. Cheers and good luck.

@@SkillsandTrade Also, if machetes have etchings like landscapes and quotes on them, using a buffer would probably smooth those out and i do not wanna do that. The knives seem to have a few spots like rust or something..i have had them for a long time.. They came from deep in Mexico..One of the knives is translated to say. WHEN YOU SEE ME SHINE, PREPARE TO DIE. LOL
