Have you ever looked at a rusty railroad track up close before a train goes over it and then looked at it again after the train crosses it? This is a small shortline railroad that gets very few trains. This is an old Norfolk and Western Ry coal line that is now owned by Norfolk Southern and leased to Cincinnati East Terminal Railway CCET. 3 old General Motors Diesel locomotives are shown switching a customer in Winchester Ohio. The boxcars are just along for the ride, having come from Huhtamaki in Batavia. Watch as the grain company's historic SW9 works with the ex Alaska Railroad GP49s to swap freight cars. Some call it shunting and some call it switching. I also show the level crossing gates and lights activate and deactivate. Trains only run as far as Winchester once or twice a week if you are lucky. Some weeks they don't run to there at all. Listening in: 160.860 megahertz. Thanks for watching! Please comment and rate! MAKE SURE YOU SUBSCRIBE TO JAWTOOTH!

That old 162 loco sounds like a beast, what motors was she running? Great to see old lines opened up, here in UK we ignore our railroads and more and more tracks are shut each year. Makes me proud to see y'all putting freight on the steel rails!! Great video. Thanks. I bought an old set of those loco air horns repaired them and fitted them to my truck, HOO YAHH that wakes up the neighbors.

Danny Holt I was curious if the W is missing. Do they still have to blow horn or is this now a quiet zone
@dannyholt105
@dannyholt105 7 жыл бұрын
The horn must be blown anyway. The "W" on the whistlepost is just a reminder and gives the engineer an idea of when to start blowing the horn (or whistle). Sort of like when the power goes out at an intersection and the redlight doesn't work but only flashes. Then it becomes a four way stop. Cheers, Dan

@JawTooth
@JawTooth 7 жыл бұрын
The switcher is a SW9 built in the late 40s. The grain elevator in Winchester Ohio leased it for years from National Railroad Equipment ( NRE ) out of Illinois. They bought it when the line reopened so now it is theirs and it is #162. Thanks for watching and Happy July 4th!

Great videos! I did notice that the detection at the grade crossings isn't set properly or perhaps they are using a different method. When the last car clears the intersection the signals are supposed to shut off fairly quickly. I'm guessing they are using a simple block-type detection method instead of the more complex and costly direction & prediction circuits.

Why are there maintenance men on ground at gates & lights? Are there maintenance problems at the crossings due to lack of use? Anyway, glad I found this channel... love small-town-rural America and diesels. Thanks.
@JawTooth
@JawTooth 7 жыл бұрын
There are so few trains on this line that some of the crossing gates won't activate because of the rust buildup on the rails. When the crossing gates or lights don't activate the conductor will get off the train and flag the crossings. That is a common problem on this line. In this video at the grain elevator, a few of the employees work for the grain elevator and not the railroad. The SW9 switch engine is owned by the grain elevator. I am glad you like my videos. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@jacksak
@jacksak 7 жыл бұрын
Jaw Tooth: Thank you for responding. There are ads on radio here saying watch out for train crossings. We used to have crossings on back roads with no gates or lights. Now, the lines have been discontinued, so no danger, but I'd rather have trains. When I was a kid, my grandfather took me to the small town to watch steam engines roll in, a big deal for me way back in the day.

I was curious as to what customer(s) those boxcars were going to or came from. Nice to see this line receiving service again even if in a more reduced capacity.
@JawTooth
@JawTooth 7 жыл бұрын
Those box cars came from Huhtamaki in Batavia. Huhtamaki is the other customer on this line besides car storage. They ship paper rolls into Huhtamaki for paper products and the boxcars come out empty except for an occasional boxcar of scrap paper.
@shortliner68
@shortliner68 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for the reply. Nice that the RR has a little bit of a mix with car types and lading handled. The smaller industries receiving only a few cars at a time have always been more interesting to me, both in real life and for modelling purposes. Hope more customers locate along the line in the future.
@JawTooth
@JawTooth 7 жыл бұрын
I like short line railroads also. They are interesting. They are building an industrial park next to this line. They just put in the road and they are supposed to put in a spur track. I hope they can get a couple new customers. I remember when this line had a bunch of active customers and even a railcar builder. They say that railroads lose 10 percent of their customers a year so they have to keep finding new ones. This line would probably have been closed for good if Ford hadn't been on it. They are one of NS most important customers. After Ford closed, Huhtamaki took over the plant and NS was forced to serve them. This line came real close to being closed for good. Every now and then I hear rumors of a proposed customer but nothing has ever come of them. There are still a few rumors floating around of possible customers. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Snow hoods? Oh the cover over the number one fan. They have nothing to do with snow, it's designed to bring warm air into the car body when the temperatures is well below zero F. In the summer you throw a lever 90 degrees to exhaust the hot air from the radiator straight up instead of into the car body. Not an uncommon feature as all the Boston and Maine railroad GP-9's were delivered with that option in 1959.
@thomasboese3793
@thomasboese3793 5 жыл бұрын
@@jamesshanks2614 Your description of the #1 fan cover (Winter Radiator Fan Cover) is correct. However, the “Snow Hoods” are the two roof-like extensions behind the cab that protect the air-filter intakes on either side of the car-body just behind the cab. These Snow-hoods and they look a bit like “Kitchen Stove Hoods”, keep blowing snow away from the air-filter intakes. You will see them on many locomotives that work north of the Lower-48 States. MobilGrain #6934 Has a Snowhood, without a Winter Radiator Fan Cover. www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2766809

It’s nice to see some one on KZfaq from southern Ohio rail fanning. I’m a model railroader and would like to pic your brain if that’s ok . I’m always looking for places to model but I don’t always know where to look to take pictures. I have a pic in my mind sort of , of what I’m looking for . What I’m looking for is a factory with pipes, silos, that would use tank cars or covered hoppers . When I look on line I keep finding these mega industries and I don’t have the room to build something like that . So I was hoping you might have seen or know of some where that meets my description and you can point me in that direction. Thank you

Winchester is where the farthest customer is located. Winchester is at MP57.7 but they store railroad cars all the way out past Peebles Ohio up to MP78.445 and it is rare to see them go past Winchester. The intro to this video shows the end of their allowable trackage at MP78.445 with the stored tank cars.
