If you are a long time beginner or just starting to solo, you are in the right place. In todays lesson I will breakdown how to get better at playing guitar solos! I will share my struggles when I started playing guitar solos. I felt like a beginner for many years. Using the A minor extended pentatonic scale with the blue note is a great way to solo because you are sliding up to some of the notes and that creates some movement to the target notes! Here is a link of the A minor extended scale. images.app.goo.gl/zb2iNQG35Yp....
Video Contents
0:00 How to get better at playing guitar solo's intro.
0:27 A minor pentatonic scale 1st position with extensions and blue note added.
3:00 Improvising over the A minor chord
5:47 Improvising over the C major chord
8:46 Playing guitar solos, tie it all together.
9:38 Words of wisdom for better guitar solos.

Why has this guy only 69k subs? Whats wrong with youtube? All of his vids are helpful and on a good level. Not "Easy unlock to your solo play for beginners" and then a mastergrade lesson in 20 harmonics and sweep picking like others.... Thumbs up Rusty. Proceed. First guy i would buy a course from.

I began learning guitar when I was a teenager, long before the internet, video and DVD's etc, just books and listening to records to work out the chords of songs, then I got married, sold all my gear and didn't touch a guitar for a very long time, now I have bought some guitars and an amp, loving picking it up again and your video's are very encouraging, thanks.

I just happened to run across your videos. Just a little background. I'm a 64 year old country fellow. I'm not a lead player. Before my hearing got so bad (in the last 10 years). I was a decent country / rockabilly bass player for dances around my area and we also played the animal clubs (eagles, moose's, elks) and VFW's. I like what and the way your are teaching. If I had run across your lessons 30 years ago I might have been a lead player instead of a bass thumper. I still play, but I'm not try to get to be a super lead player. I like the way you explain what your are doing as you are playing. Your not to loud, you have a good mix on your sound (guitar, backing track on the looper and your voice) . You have just gained another subscriber.

There are 5 positions of the pentatonic , plus you can play everything one octave up past the 12th fret .. with a good ear you can play and extend the first position higher upon the neck . Triads are also a good help to climb fast , but yes you have to play it with feel so that means dressing the notes up with slides and bends ... you did great here in this tutorial connecting everything... see Angus Young still plays pentatonic .. so it doesn’t have to be that complicated , just play it with passion feel and dedication , for rock n roll the right attitude is very important

I'm exactly in this phase of learning, trying to explore more of the fretboard. I don't fancy just copying others work and I rather progress and find the way on my own. Sometimes it's just useless noodling and crap, but sometimes I hit the right notes and it starts to sound nice and melodic. It gives me great piece of satisfaction and will to continue.

I like the way you travel up and down from string to string ! I’ve developed a bad way of changing strings that I’ve been doing since I was a kid! It sounds wrong! The way your doing it sounds how it should! I think that’s one of the tricks to playing is how we move from string to string not necessarily chromatic just laterally! Side to side feels natural but Lateral is awkward! I’ve got bad habits moving Laterally from string to string especially when I try going fast!

Thanks for the lesson Rusty. I’m still in the beginner stage of my soloing but here and there, I have glimpses of hope that I’m starting to play a little by ear and feel. Would you say ear and feel starts to become more natural and will maybe replace playing in box shapes and memorised patterns the more I progress?

I always get something out of your lessons. I was stuck in the mud for many years. It did not keep my interest. For the last 3months I have been cramming on KZfaq. there are several good teachers out there. I am tired of using backing tracks. I am going to check out blues jams in the area

Bought a cheap red strat copy 45 years ago when I was 15. Hadn’t a clue, tried playing ‘James Bond’ theme on top string (badly). The world didn’t come knocking at my door or fall at my feet. Hand painted the poor little guitar black and then in a fit of complete teenage idiocy and hubris tried to refret the damn thing. I think it probably ended up in the bin. A year later another cheap, no name guitar bought from Traffords catalogue. This time a couple of library books on chords and a few Chappell music chord books (the Thin Lizzy one was particularly disappointing in those pre ‘tab’ days). But in my head I was well on my way to being on stage with Jimmy Page.. (Ah, to be a 16 year old knobhead again). My passion and unrealistic expectations took a bit of a hammering after going to see Rory Gallagher, AC/DC and some supremely talented local bands in quick succession. Left school, got a job and life went on, dreams of stardom forgotten. Borrowed an acoustic off a mate in my late twenties and actually taught myself a few songs, hung out with a few local musicians and occasionally sat in on sessions strumming along and eventually switching to bass guitar. God bless you Eric Clapton Unplugged, Best of Van Morrison and The Eagles Greatist Hits. Motto of all this rambling? Music and guitar are life long loves, you are never too old to learn and progress. Advice to my younger self? Learn the basic chords (and lyrics of a song) before trying to play the guitar behind your head or with your teeth. Less noodling and daydreaming, rather have small bite size achieveable goals - also, have fun! Love your channel Rusty and what you are kindly sharing. Could have done with such a teacher many years ago. By the way I can hear bits of David Gilmour type lead in your playing - obviously I mean this as a compliment! Cheer’s and keep up the good work. Glad to have discovered your channel.

Rusty, First thanks for all of helpful videos you put out. When you use the pentatonic boxes 1-5 is there certain boxes you use more then other. Find when using box 2 and 5, I’m using just the GBE strings. Where box 1 3 5 I tend to use the whole box for licks. Thanks for any tips Bob
@rustysguitar1
@rustysguitar1 Жыл бұрын
You are using them in a Good Way,, Bob! I do the same thing. Just use part of the scale. You don’t need to use the whole scale using two or three strings at a time it’s easier to climb up each position! Glad you are moving forward! Thanks for all your support Bob👍

I am just starting to get back into Guitar as until lately I just was not getting it. I was in limbo and even sold the equipment in disgust. However lately I have been getting the urge to get back into playing the guitar again. Watching many videos until I came across your video "Adding Notes To A Chord" WOW that was an opener or Guitar Brain Opener. LOL I can really relate and understand what you saying in these lessons. I do have a ways to go to get things completely back however I have a folder in the Music app and I am making sure that these course links are in the folder for me to have a reference too. Thanks, Rusty for turning my new Guitar Light Bulb on.

So I've been playing this extension for so long in the same old boring way. Then you just made it sound so much more musical then I ever have. Got a free metronome on my phone, so going to find a speed I feel comfortable with and go for it. Why do some guitar players hate using a metronome? Makes no sense to me, if it helps.
@rustysguitar1

Yes, I’ve been using that extension for many years and love it. Also use the metronome quite often. So if you keep working with those tools you will really be moving forward. Thanks again Matt for checking out my lessons and all your support.👍

A great way to practice that is to solo over one chord like we did in the video. Just target the notes in that one chord and try to target them inside the pentatonic scale. It’s so hard to hear the chord changes into follow them! I have to work at it myself all the time! There is one chord backing tracks on KZfaq that might help. Keep working at it buddy!
