You've seen the cars make moves on track, and heard engineers making calls on the radio. But on the pit wall, there's a frantic, non-stop world of action, as strategists look to seize opportunity and maximise points. We chat to Head of Race Strategy at Alfa Romeo, Ruth Buscombe, in this week's fascinating episode of Beyond the Grid.

As always, a very insightful and entertaining interview with Ruth Boscombe. If I could request one thing from your show Tom is; a quick recap of the races you mention on the show. I do not as I'm sure many dont, have en encyclopedic memory of every race. A quick anecdote of the events that transpired at say, the particular Spa race you mentioned would be greatly appreciated and i really wouldn't mind a longer interview to make that change. Thank you for your podcasts!

I'm not so sure Williams is really slower. Especially in the wet the Williams for some reason is really fast, and with Russell driving it, easily making it into Q3. Alfa usually might have similar pace, but Williams' got better leadership and has better drivers.

@@TheSt1092 Thats not true. Alfa was much faster in zandvoort was close to ferrari in monza. Giovinazzi had damage in both race. In the start of the season alfa were much better

Ferrari engine vs Merc engine :- thats something for you to analyse yourself. And if the Works team itself is saying the problem of the car is down to the engine itself ,cause you will be building the car based on the engine, it all makes sense seeing Merc winning races.

Just make sure to bring her back man, Ruth episode once or twice a season I'm down. I've actually listened to this episode more than once just because her stories and insights are so compelling. Please bring her back. So so so much better than most drivers and team principles who often seem to have prepared cookie cutter answers - Ruth's giving us some real behind the scenes stuff and I feel like she's got plenty more to tell us. Even if it's just the nitty gritty of strategy in the most recent season.

This was one of the most informative podcasts so far. On par with ones with the Sir Patrick Head and the Brackley boys. Great ambassador for women in sport, especially on the engineering side. I'm an engineer too, and from my observations, women generally do better in engineering environments by staying cooler under pressure. On a side note: hoping that F1 can return to South Africa to hopefully inspire the next Jody Scheckter or Rory Byrne. Thanks for the great job that you do :)

Sharp lady with inside perspective, hope to hear more from other strategists. Please hold off with the gender/identity politics. She actually stated that, the best person for the job will get the position. I'm sure women are more sensitive to micro-aggression, sorry for that. The stem fields are tough and most of the time women aren't fit to bear the burden of putting in the extra time to be the best. Also, women tend to be more nurturing to children. So, the child rearing duties can really get in the way. As a man, they do sacrifice a lot to give more hours to the job instead of being at home with the children.
