I kinda feel sad for Sauber this year. I think it's a great team with passionate, hard-working people. Yet, they don't get any credit for it due to their results on track. Hope to see them recover soon, it would be really sh*tty to see such a team disappear from F1.

@pinecone89696 жыл бұрын
Ted (A reporter/presenter from Sky Sports F1 UK) went over to congratulate Ruth and Haas on their 6th place finish in Australia. He talked about how there wasn't much strategy to do as Romain could be put on the medium tyre at the red flag, making any pit stop unneccesary. A shy Ruth Buscombe contiunued to walk into the garage whilst explaining that she doesn't do interviews. Another member of the team comforted her and helped her away from the eyes and ears of the prying media.

@Warose926 жыл бұрын
So it is very easy for a "bad" team to take risks like this call. It becomes more difficult, when you are in a top team and have to "cover" the other top teams. I'm pretty sure, if winklehock would have been in the top ten of the starting grid, they wouldn't have changed the tire that early :D

@506thLittleberry6 жыл бұрын
I miss the days when the driver and race engineer figured out their strategy together. We saw some really inspired strategy calls during races from Michael Schumacher sometimes. He'd just out think the other teams. I have a feeling drivers don't really get listened to much anymore if they want to change strategies during a race.
@pinecone89696 жыл бұрын
The thing is that 99% of the time, the pitwall has some information that there is no way the driver would have. Whether thats 'pace of other cars on one tyre compared to another' or 'the driver ahead is showing signs of a slow puncture,' it would allow the strategists to make more informed decisions and to use proper risk management depending on race position. In addition, in 2017, there really isn't much strategy to do. It's either 1 stop and maintain position, or 2 stop to try something different but end up stuck behind cars a sec/lap slower than you that you can't pass. The drivers just need to trust that the team knows what they're doing. Of course the driver needs some input, as there will be some (but very few) things that only the driver is aware of but the teams nowadays have data for literally everything.
@506thLittleberry6 жыл бұрын
All of that's true. But the driver's race engineer has all that information as well. Or he could have it easily if there were no separate strategy engineers. I just think the way they do it now allows the driver less of a chance to improve their own chances during a race. Now they're at the mercy of what the team's overall goals are. Even if there's a clear opportunity to do something to improve your position, you can't do it if the team decides they like you where you are. Like Kimi stuck behind Seb in Hungary. Or any number of other races this year where they sacrificed his race by keeping him out too long to help Seb. It would be better if the driver and his race engineer alone were in charge of their strategy and they could operate independently to ensure the best possible finish.
@Warose926 жыл бұрын
In my opinion this is because most drivers are very young and "unexperienced". They either trust in their strategy-engineer or they have no clue about their strategy. I think this differs a very good and talented driver from a perfect driver! Michael Schumacher was a legend. I know, that many people blame him for cheating here and there, but in the end you have to admit, that he has seven world championchips and tons of experience. He was so long in the business, that he knew everything about the conditions, races, strategys etc.

Does that mean that Ferrari burn all their data before race day? because even I've been more on the ball over the last two years than their strategy engineers >.< Most recently, I saw the damage to Vettels wing in Canada, wasn't hard to see. He should've also pitted for his second stop about 10 laps earlier, yes he would've been further back, but given what everyone else did on the Ultras he barely touched their lifespan putting them on the second time and yes, he would've had to have overtaken Fernando Alonso again, but with that Honda engine a GP2 car would be able to out drag it.
