Yes! Me too. I was in my 20s when it first came out around 1978-79 or so. I wanted to be just like her when I got old. Now I am nearing 70 and surprisingly I’m not far off! I went back to the movie theater two more times that week to see it again. Over the years, Wore out the video tape and one dvd. It’s a great gift to give people. I love Cat Steven’s music too. The music really wraps itself in the story.

I went to see Harold and Maude at the theater with a friend when it came out. I loved it. She absolutely hated it. 🤣

@@JM-zk9ou Cute, ya, it's one of those love it or hate it movies. My mother, at the time, thought it was absolutely "disgusting"! To me - at 24, it gave me hope: That if it takes a lifetime to find the right guy, there is still hope! As long as he looks 20! Reality has set in since I was young. I am now 68! Do I see myself w a 20 something now?! HELL, no! But I DO see myself loving Harold and Maude til I die. Peace out people!

What a terrific underrated actress and writer Ruth Gordon was. She was terrific in an episode of "Columbo", great in "Rosemary's Baby", "Harold and Maude", "Where's Poppa", an episode of "Taxi" - - the list goes on and on.

Don’t forget that Ruth and her husband were also great screenwriters. They penned several of the Tracey-Hepburn movie classics. And it’s not widely known that they were integral in helping Streisand develop her characterization of Fanny Brice in Funny Girl.

@mzmiller52 3 жыл бұрын
Rumor has it, Garson Kanin didn’t direct the performance that made streisand a legend. She supposedly was taking direction from someone she knew earlier, I think Alan Miller.

It is not widely known that two years after this Cavett telecast, Ruth Gordon’s husband, author Garson Kanin, came out with the non-fiction book Tracy and Hepburn: An Intimate Memoir, and Hepburn read it and became very upset. She decided never again to communicate with her neighbor Garson Kanin. I don’t know if Hepburn remained willing to give Kanin’s wife Ruth Gordon the time of day. But I know Hepburn never forgave Kanin and cut him off. They all continued to live in their neighboring Manhattan homes for many years after the 1971 publication of Kanin’s evidently inaccurate book. This Cavett video captures the innocent year of 1969 when none of the aging neighbors (It was the Turtle Bay section of Manhattan) knew about the hostility or the hurt feelings that lay on the horizon.

Obviously Ruth Gordon and Bud Cort are amazing in Harold and Maude, but please let's not overlook how fantastic Vivian Pickles is. The more times I watch Harold and Maude, the more I enjoy Vivian's performance. "I even find the question distasteful." "Harold, puh-lease." Also, the priest is wonderful (especially his monologue), and the soundtrack, and the script. And the directing.

A good talk show host knows when to shut up. Nobody is going to change the channel during this monologue. Its actually reminiscent of Dodie Goodman, who's daffy and stream of conscience talk show chatter was deemed per gold by Paar, Griffin, Carson etc. As for the talented Gordon, her career spanned Broadway, movies and television and her theatrical style served her well in every roll, every medium of entertainment for 65 plus years.

In other words, in those days as it is today (I don't give a flying F....about me too although it did make a difference for the victims, it won't change the way actors and actresses get chosen for a role) unless you get down on your knees and blow the director, the producer or the crew, you won't get the role. Indeed, to wait until you are well into your fifties to get the big role in both Rosemary's Baby and Harold and Maude means that she didn't sell herself short and that for me is what I call integrity. Bravo Maude...I mean Ruth.
