Ruth is one of the extraordinary people I volunteer with at MIEACT (Mental Illness Education ACT).
Ruth's story of childhood mental illness brought on by abuse coupled with difficulties in getting adequate mental health care, are a telling example of WHY mental illness awareness is crucial.
With the love and support of her husband, kids and the right mental heath team, Ruth is an extraordinary woman living an extraordinary life.
Her story will educate, it will make you laugh, and at times it will make you marvel at her strength of character.
Listen and be inspired.
We go into workplaces, schools, universities and more and share our lived experience of mental illness.
We do this by sharing our stories using the 'Do No Harm' story telling framework. mieact.org.au/donoharm-framew...
In short 'Do NO Harm' allows us to tell our stories safely.
According to the MIEACT website 'For over 25 years MIEACT has addressed stigma with the power of personal story-telling about mental illness in the community...
In 2011, MIEACT took a closer look at the risks of personal story telling when re-telling episodes of trauma, suicide, self-harm, disorder eating. Through extensive research, consultation and review MIEACT was able to highlight the vulnerabilities and safety risks to both story-teller and listener that can have a negative impact and further reduce learning outcomes.'
Ruth and I have used the principles of 'Do No Harm' in our conversation.
While MIEACT has help facilitate the interview they are in no way Affiliated with Shattered - The Podcast [STP].
