Rutland Ospreys third egg is broken by a runaway huge headless flapping fish 14 May 2021

Unedited raw footage from 14.19 to 15.11 showing a headless fish suddenly breaking loose from Maya as she feeds the two chicks, squashing the chicks, and breaking the third egg. The egg is shown to be addled, so that means it's just the two Osplets for Maya & Blue 33 this year. But both chicks are both strong and healthy, and growing by the hour. Actually the fish, a perch, only appears to be headless, poor thing was obviously still alive although Maya had been tearing into it, starting as usual with the mouth (21:32). She seemed bemused when it broke loose, and let it flap on top of the chicks until dad Blue 33 returned and intervened (46:30) after which she tidied up the eggshell and settled back down to brood the two chicks. Was the fish still alive although with most of its head gone? Or was it just the automatic reflexes still present, as seen in lizard tails which have been autotomised to allow the actual lizard to escape while the predator concentrates on the writhing detached tail?

Maya didn’t seem to know how to deal with the headless fish sitting where she should be sitting. She circled round, distracting herself by adjusting the furniture, then attempted to drag the fish away, before giving up and sitting on chicks, broken egg and half the fish! Luckily, Dad arrived and dragged it off, leaving Maya to deal with the egg. I wondered if the previous flapping fish had damaged the inside of the egg.
@GeemeffGeemeff
@GeemeffGeemeff 3 жыл бұрын
It was an interesting incident. It has been mooted that broken egg was actually the first egg laid and was never going to hatch - that may be why the first egg to hatch was a bit late, because if that theory is correct it was actually the second egg laid. In that case, egg 1 failed and eggs 2 & 3 turned into chicks 1 & 2 .

Obviously the reflexes were in motion, have heard that with geese, but fish? Having just looked at the footage, the fish's tail flipped up a few times whilst Maya fed the chicks. Then when she stopped and after little while with Maya away from the fish it took a great leap. I saw this happen twice. So it's reflexes must be working still. Any idea , Geemeff?

Interesting you consider the nest engineered. I've always considered the ospreys nest building abilities more as Helter Skelter! 😆 I've seen the same stick change locations six times over a week, only to fall to the ground! The nest obviously serves a purpose. However, when you compare it with other birds (i.e., hummingbirds) it's hard to classify it as engineered. Even eagles seem to have more method to their madness. Then again, some birds don't even bother with nests, and simply raise their brood on the ground! Why any animal that can fly would do that is beyond me! The instinct of the parents with small clutches is to feed the biggest, usually the oldest, chick the most food, and only then the second chick who is pretty much an insurance policy against the survival of the first. If there's enough food then the second and subsequent chicks get a chance.

Sometimes I wonder if birds have the ability to count. Seems like the mother gives most of the food to one chick and doesn't have the ability to decipher between the two, and realize one isn't getting the food. I guess the most aggressive chick will grow up the strongest

Parents feed in response to the begging of the chicks and their gape reflex. If it's too weak to beg, it won't be fed, thus freeing the parent to save the resources for where they'll be most useful.

@GeemeffGeemeff

They concentrate their efforts on the one most likely to carry their genes forward, that's usually the eldest. The 'spare' comes second and will survive if there is sufficient food to go round.

@@GeemeffGeemeff I know some bird species feed all chicks equally, some feed chicks as they demand, and some species kill off the weaker young until they reach an instinctive survival level. I've seen videos of some species where a second egg is laid a week to ten days after the first, but when the egg hatches, if the older chick is healthy, it drives the younger, weaker chick out of the nest so it's (the older chick) the only survivor. Mother Nature is a harsh bitch. I watched some bird videos this week (especially storks, apparently) where the mother kills off the weaker chicks and eats them, or feeds them to the rest of the nestlings. Yipe!!

I’m surprised the fish was still alive after being out of water for that long and being partially eaten. How very sad. By smashing that egg, the fish avenged it’s own death, along with those of all of the other creatures who were prey. In Fish Heaven (😉), it was greeted with a hero’s welcome. If you want to translate a foreign language but don't know what it is, enter the text in the left hand side and then look at the heading over the box you've just typed in and select 'detect language'. Then select 'English' in the right hand heading, and google will translate for you. If you know what language you want to translate, you can just select that language from the left hand header language options, but personally I always just use 'detect language' because it's faster and more accurate. For example if you think it's Spanish but it's actually Basque which is a Spanish dialect and quite similar (sorry :-) any Basque people reading this), google will reject it and not translate, so it's easier just to use the 'detect language' option. Hope this helps - have a try.. translate.google.co.uk/

My lesson: we tend to put human feelings into a situation like this and and think...shouldn’t she check on the little ones....are they hurt....let me move this fish so they can free themselves.....but no.....she’s operating on pure instinct.....nothing to do with loving concern for the little ones.....or the egg. And that’s just the way it is.

That's called anthromorphization. These creatures have such otherworldly abilities, that it's easy to attribute more intelligence than they actually have. A classic example is where a male osprey brought a ball cap to the nest. He was so fixated on it, that it irritated the female. She eventually picked it up, took off, and dropped it into the bay! On the other hand, the same male recently brought plastic bag to the nest. The same female not only tolerated it, but seemed to value it as nesting material. Obviously, the plastic bag was more of a threat to the chicks than a ball cap! Unfortunately, people also commonly anthromorphosize dogs, to the detriment of both, IMHO! If I can find the link to the ball cap video, I'll come back and post it here. It's a classic! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z92he7Z40sjNqac.html

It was the reflex of the fish at work. The fish was already murdered by Maya (for a good cause of raising her young, of course). They are lucky the flapping headless Halloween didn't sustain any damage to the two hatched chicks. Dad Blue never cared about the situation. He was just picking up his ration and enjoy the meal on a quiet spot nearby. Reflex of a dead fish is common. I had entirely scaled, gutted and cleaned a whole fish. By the time I cook it half an hour later, it flapped in the pan. So the title of this video is a bit sensational.

@@Charles61284 Ospreys are special, aren't they, and being piscivorous means we're not going to see all manner of tragic little prey brought back, unlike the raptors in your CB programme. Of course, when the fish is still flapping, it's hard not to feel sorry for it but it doesn't give me the stomach-lurch like my recently viewing of a cat in an eagle's nest. Envy you working with raptors, how thrilling, the closest I've come is spending the night in the cottages at the Raptor Foundation near Oxford, going to sleep to the hooting of the owls and waking up to the shrill whistles of the hawks, before doing the morning rounds with a keeper as part of my pre-booked birthday 'experience day'.
@Charles61284
@Charles61284 3 жыл бұрын
@@GeemeffGeemeff I agree with you 100%, CB isn’t without its tragedies, often the parents refuse to incubate the eggs, then there’s the problem that some will even attack and eat their own chicks, or each other usually the females killing the males being they’re a third bigger. Overall it’s very satisfying and rewarding and most of what I’ve said is usually but not always due to inexperienced parents. On the odd o occasion we’ve had to hand rear raptors when the parents just abandon them, definitely to be avoided if at all possible. Imprinted birds can be fearless making them very unpredictable and sometimes even dangerous. Once again thank you for your update on the Ospreys 👍

21:36 FISH Flattens CHICKS!! Both CHICKS stay DOWN until 22:10 . WAS this like what EAGLE Chicks do?? EAGLE Chicks BONK each other right after hatching to determine which one is Stronger and the Weaker will be the Submissive chick. Siblings Constantly BONK each other for Food. Weaker Chicks go into SUBMISSION pose ( head down body tight to the nest) until the Strongest chick is fed . Then the weaker gets food.

Edit: just read the description, and it claims that the fish only appeared to be headless, but was only wounded and was still alive. What drew me to this video was the idea that an intact fish had crushed an egg. I've always found it interesting that often, the male will decapitate the fish elsewhere, apparently rendering it motionless, before bringing it to the nest. However, sometimes they bring an intact fish to the nest and it wreaks havoc. I've always wondered why the first approach isn't SOP. While it still seems prudent, it's apparently no guarantee of safety! Yet another example of why these cameras have proven invaluable to science! By the way, I didn't have time to watch the whole video, I'm just going by the comments. A timestamp to the actual incident would be helpful.

That’s an interesting thought - they bring it in headless to make sure it’s good and dead. I always thought maybe the head was delicious and the parent would eat it first, but you pose a great theory! I’d certainly rather they bring fish to the nest than other creatures. At least the fish usually die quickly out of the water. How this one survived as long as it did, especially being partially eaten, is sad.
