The emperor could have saved most of his children if he'd taken a stronger hand in the affairs of the Harem. Heck, if he would have acted upon the first act of insubordination and scheming from the consorts, the in-fighting would have likely been significantly reduced. As for Jia it's comical that the one time she's actually innocent is the one time he smacks her into the shadow realm.
