Thank You for explaining it. I am a retired HVAC tech with a lot of experience. I am looking to downsize from my manufactured home to a "Park Model " that comes with a 50AMP hook up. It comes with a Mini- Heat pump /AC and an electric water heater. I want to add some Hydro-sil baseboard heaters but I wasn;t sure I would have the 230 V necessary. When the digital FLUKE meters came out, I went out and bought my own. The company I worked for provided us the little analog meters that will kill you, especially if your working 3 phase. I am 77 now and still have that fluke I bought in 1970. The worst service call to diagnose was when for some reason the neutral leg had an open circuit. My daughter now lives/works/travels in her Thor Tallero 20J and I had to teach her about all the different plugs. I also installed a 30 AMP plug alongside my garage so she can hook up when visiting. I am glad to see a good explanation of the 50a RV plug. There is as much misinformation on this as there is on RV tires. Everybody is an expert. Another one is think that you must have a 50a at your house, when maybe a 30a will suffice at home.

Trying to install a 50 amp service for my RV. I was with you until you showed your breaker panel and at the end you said you had the two breakers dedicated to the RV circuit with legs down to other breakers sharing 120 volts. Now I am more confused than when I started. Electrical work is not in my wheelhouse, so its not your fault.

The stupid owners manual for mine calls it 50 amp 120v. I kept thinking that this cannot be right. Thanks for the confirmation.

I own a 30amp RV. I'm looking into installing an electric tankless water heater. Is it possible to upgrade my rig to a 50 amp system and use one of the legs for the water heater alone and the other leg to the rest of the RV?

Love your video! I can’t figure out how the neutral can handle both legs? Let’s say you run the 50 amp service as talked about but instead of 50 amp plug, you run two 30 amp RV plugs (one from each leg) but each leg uses the neutral which is the same size as each leg? If all the wires are the same size, how does the neutral handle return from two legs without melting? If two campers were running at 30amps from each leg, doesn’t that put 60amps on the one neutral wire? Is that ok to do?

I have a 2008 FEMA trailer and it seems to have 3 live circuits on it. How can that be? I assumed it would only have 2 circuits 15 amps each? I'm on 30 amp park power. I'm probably missing something. I try to run 2 small space heaters on the same "line" and it trips the breaker for that line

I suspect only 20% or so of the bigger RVs need 50 amp service and thus most folks should be fine with the 30 amp setup. If you want to future proof your setup, spending $200 or so now for the heavier wiring and larger CBs is probably a decent way to go.

Do the outlets on the outside breaker use more electricity? My landlord is saying I'm stealing electricity cuz I have a space heater plugged to the outside panel using an extension cord...

What happens to the low side of the input circuit? Does the low side of the transformer go to ground?

You should always carry 50A to 30A & a 30A to 20A adapters. Always use the highest amp service wherever you camp. !

Being first is not always the best, much of the rest of the world was able to skip 120v split phase and just go with 220v ... more efficient use of copper etc. USA was early adopter and too late to change infrastructure. I guess to keep it simple presenter did not show the actual phase waveform (peaks) , that's also a useful and more true explanation.

Si basically I just tell my electrician to install a 50amp 240v plug in post and the rv will split it into 120 inside right

Plus also one thing to add it’s not three pole four wire it’s a two pole for wire. We call it polls because that is the gang of breakers that are connected together in the panel so they two pole 50 amp or pole 30 amp are only considered two polesof three pole and our language would be three phase and these are not three phase

The biggest problem I've heard of is either a do-it-yourselfer or a not-so-good certified electrician installing a 240 volt 30 amp outlet on someone's house for them to plug their RV into.

Wow, I have completely wired many new construction homes and set up my RV 50 amp plugs at the different homes I own. Your explanation was not easy for most to understand. It is easier to explain it as there is only 120 volts (give or take a few volts) going into any home panel. The two 120 legs are just out of phase with each other. There isn't any 220 volts. Each leg is 120 volts just out of phase. Everything in the master panel is 120 volt. What happens inside the machine (Welder, electric motor, etc.) using the two legs of 120volts is not important. Nothing in an RV runs on 220 volts. Everything in an RV is 120 volts.

I don’t know why you’re calling the neutral 240 V you can never measure 240 V to ground. I understand what you’re trying to get to the neutral is grounded but you should never say that the neutral is 240 V between the neutral and hot would be 120 only, hot to hot 240 neutral to ground to be zero 35 year electrician here
