Today we are sharing how to install the MicroAir Easy Start on the RV AC. It is a device that drastically reduces the surge of power needed to start the Air Conditioning unit. It makes it possible to start it on a smaller generator or have two 13,500 ac units run on a 30 amp service or make it easier on your Solar Inverter setup when off grid. I hope this helps walk you through setting it up.

Thanks, your video was exactly what I needed to ensure I did not screw it up. Got mine installed last night. 🙂One note for others with the same unit (Furrion) that was not obvious to me at first, is the splicing of the last blue wire. Once that is done, reconnect it to the other blue and put it back where it was. That connection can also be loose so be careful when putting things back in the box. It's a tight fit. I spent far more time taking things apart and putting them back than the actual wire installation part. That was the only challenging part.

Thanks for this. I just installed the microair today and ran it 5 times before using it on my genmax gm3200i. This thing made such a difference. I have a 13.5k btu AC and it pulled peak 11amps and ran around 1080-1110 watts. I can now run my AC and still have nearly 2000 watts of power left

Did the Micro-Air install this weekend. Jared's walk-through was extremely helpful. Really, it wasn't that complicated and the installation kit for my 15K Coleman Mach had everything needed. Worst part was getting up on the roof! My Honda EU2200i now easily starts the A/C (ECO off) and keeps it running (ECO on). I've had the A/C, a few lights and the TV on at the same time without any issues. Saved the cost of paralleling with another EU2200i!

Great video Jared, thanks very much. I have an earlier version AC unit but everything was pretty much the same. I used the wagos that came with the install kit and taped the little levers closed with electrical tape. I have yet to do the 5 cycles as I only have a 3500 watt genny and no pedestal power. I called support and they said that the first learning cycle runs at 40% and then subsequent runs get more optimized at 60% and higher, and that if you do the first cycle on anything less than a 4K Genny it will not be programmed optimally. Oh and the really annoying thing was that every time my AC compressor kicked on before the install, the surge would reboot my starlink router lol. Was driving me nuts!Thanks again!!

For me living in California, only hot places I would be staying at would have full hookups like Laughlin Nevada Koa at the Avi Casino. I’d never boondock in a desert. Most camping boondock spots for me is in the mountains or beach and in the summer they always cool down at night.

I installed one of the Micro-Air on my 15K AC. Went from 46 AMP start to 19 Amps after the five training start. I have an older 3500 Honda generator running on propane. Before I installed the micro-air the Honda would really grunt getting the AC started. Now with the micro-air installed I always have to go and look at my amp meter to be able to tell if the compressor has kicked in or not, no more "GRUNT".

One thing you didn’t mention is the relearn procedure. In rare cases you have to reset to default and have the easy start relearn the unit. I just ran into this problem where the AC wasn’t working properly, the AC compressor would not always kick on or would shutdown prematurely . I did the relearn and the unit is working fine for the last couple months. The installer/engineer from MicroAir told me about it and how to do it. It is also on their website.

As usual, great video! I've really been a fan of your channel lately. Thanks for all the good videos! I love all the electrical type stuff you include... and my wife likes the ones where you show things in your RV! I'm waiting to see if you do one on the Fridge Defend ARP though.... I just installed one of those in mine. It wasn't too bad, and I love the information I can glean from it now! (I installed it inside my unit so I could interact with it rather than behind the fridge.) It seems like it is right up your alley though. I just installed one of these MicroAir Easy Start 364 on my 13.5k but Dometic Brisk Air 2 about 2 months ago. I ordered it straight from MicroAir (due to fear of getting fake parts from Amazon) and they had a $30 off coupon, so that was nice. Install was pretty easy, the hardest part for me was figuring out where to mount it... I didn't really like where I ended up putting it but for my unit there weren't many "mounting" options. As far as the use, it looks like it has knocked my cranking amps down to around 17ish amps (that's the best reading I could get out of my amp meter) so I am very happy with that! I didn't really have issues starting it up with my Champion Duel Fuel generator even when running on propane, but I still believe it helps and I didn't want to go with one of the $10 dumb start capacitors! All in all, I love this thing! I'll also add that I found some of the WAGO lever nuts that come in different configurations (2,3,5, etc... wires) that make connecting multiple wires really easy and to me seems more secure and cleaner looking than crimping and using wire nuts. (Especially for the blue wire that had 3 wires combined... so much nicer!) I'll also add that when "testing" the MicroAir Easy Start following some of the information in the install guide it says this: "...if you turn off the compressor at the thermostat when it is running then turn it on right away, EasyStart will prevent the compressor from starting for five minutes. If the compressor starts sooner, you have a wiring problem." Mine was actually restarting back in 3 minutes, and even though everything was confirmed when hooking it up and everything seemed to be working as it should, this 5 minute rule still threw me, so I called them. They informed me that on the newer units that time is now 3 minutes... so I was happy to hear that! Anywho, thanks again for another great video. Looking forward to more!

This system works by putting a time delay relay in the fan start circuit so that the fan and compressor aren't starting at the same time. Motor loads have something called in-rush current during start. Starting the fan a few seconds later than the compressor significantly reduces the total in-rush current which should avoid overloading the generator. Just thought explaining how it works would help people understand that it isn't a scam.

Curious if this only works on rv style air conditioners or could this be adapted to work with a window unit air conditioner. Planning on putting a small WU in a box truck conversion and I'm worried about the amp draw, especially the surge when the compressor kicks on. Havent seen much info on this idea. For reference im not trying to be able to run a unit solely off generator or shore power. Going for solar charged, deep cycle battery unit then into the AC but I have yet to see a window unit that doesn't surge past 40-50 amps.

You should Never short a capacitor. You should Always discharge it through a low ohm resistor. The law of physics is that you cannot instantaneously change the voltage across a capacitor. When you violate this law. Something has to give, and that something is internal damage. You can short out the capacitor internally by doing this.

MicroAir has a video on their channel that shows the difference. I can't remember the numbers off the top of my head, and I know it will vary from situation to situation. I don't have the fanciest amp meter (it's a Southwire 21550 from Lowes) but it showed 17 amps when starting up my 13.5k Dometic Brisk Air 2 after install. I'll admit that I didn't get a reading before installing it, but my unit has a 68A LRA listed on its wiring schematics sheet.

I have read that this can allow the A/C to be used when plugged into a common 15 or 20 amp home outlet. Any thoughts on that? I'm wondering if there is still too much draw to support a 15 or 20 amp outlet and the fire risk too great to safely use?

It can but it would be the only thing on for a 15,000 btu ac to not over draw on a 15 amp breaker. If it’s 20 amp or a 13,000 btu ac you have a little wiggle room to have a couple small things on.

I don't understand why it costs so much to add a capacitor to an air conditioner now days! Into the 2000's I've bought air conditioner capacitor kits for $15 new several times starting in the late 1980's. They came with instructions, a larger capacitor than the factory air conditioner one with enough wire to locate the added capacitor where it would fit and that was it. No circuit board control center. Add the capacitor is what will pick up a person and send them flying and what should be grounded first and depending on the electronics being worked on grounded often while working on a component. Been working around them since the 1960's.

Agree. Someone should tear down this thing and see what the components are really worth. Seems grossly overpriced. Worked for Carrier many years ago and most a/c units are now made in China and the prices are about the same as they were 40 to 50 years ago for complete units.

Does cooling capacity of your AC goes down after the install?
@AskRemy
@AskRemy 4 жыл бұрын
No. The purpose is to engage the compressor. The load required to engage it is very high, let's say 3000 watts. Once it is engaged and cooling - the operating power will range around 1300 watts to 1800 watts depending on your model. A generator can easily handle the operating watts, but only a few can handle the engaging watts.

No, the cooling capacity does not go down after installing a soft start. But, it does take a little longer for the air to blow as cool as it does without one. Soft starts slowly ramp up the compressor/motor, so there isn’t a big influx all at once. Soft starts are more gentle on compressors/motors, which are better on them in the long run.
