John, great videos. Unfortunately, the RV industry will not change, as it is about profits over quality. We always say ... "The only thing that works on an RV .... is it's Owner". That said, the only two types of RV's that are made today are ... those that leak ... and those that are going to leak. We are still going strong with our 2004 Snowriver 102RK Truck Camper. Hand built by Bob Mehrer (RIP 2013) and his crew in British Columbia. It is built like a tank. RV's of today are not made like our "old 2004". Maybe the RV industry can reflect on the build quality of the past to build a better future. Cheers.

25 yrs of RVing and owning 4 brand new RVs. My first three motorhomes 1999, 2004, 2007 were all built like a tank. My 2020 motorhome not so much, but as Mark Martin says about his 2021 Newell “ it takes a year to get it where it needs to be” I must say Winnebago addressed every single fit and finish issue I had. I would never give up my 2020 after Winnebago came to bat “ it’s where it needs to be, now” The 3 year Winnebago warranty ( on anything Winnebago built ) says something about what they will do to get where it needs to be. Of course only the factory service center is the only place I would go.

It took me three years with my Keystone Bullet and more with my R-Pod to get them dialed in. The Keystone was mainly the Dometic components going bad. I was impressed with the Winnebago models at the Tampa show this past January. You mention the factory service center. Every RV manufacturer should have this option for any customer who would rather go there than to their selling dealer. I think manufacturers are effectively shooting themselves in the foot with the dealers they choose.

Interesting that Forest River ditched the front window on many 2024 R-Pods, and calling the new models 'Classic'...I have a late June production 2021 171 and have received one of two recall notices for the window - the first, water leak , which mine does not suffer from, and the second, window shade "droop", meaning the entire assembly falls down, which I did encounter this year. The recall 'fix' dictates four 'L' bracket supports at the top edge of the frame - mine has two...I used toothpick stubs and carpenter's glue to fill the stripped out mounting screw holes and reattached. Has held up for the last couple of trips.

Re: Your new RV quality comment request: I was aware of poor RV quality before I ever considered purchasing one. When going to purchase my first, I was able to purchase a 'basically new' RV - a decommissioned rental that the dealership owned and maintained. They purchased it new from the factory, rented it out for 6 months, and then put it up for sale. This felt like the best case for me as it was basically new, had little mileage, had a 'used' pricetag, and was maintained by the dealership for the first 6 months. With that, I feel my quality problems have been minimal. I've owned a 2021 Thor Four Winds 22E for 2 years now and fortunately I've had no failures that have forced me to make an emergency appointment. Little things like loose plumbing connections, side window handle detachment, squeaky microwave, and a couple of chintzy plastic pieces breaking have been the extent of my issues.

@@JohnMarucci Pretty much. I think the key piece is having the dealership own and maintain it for a duration vs just an inspection/road test. If someone is okay with an RV having some miles on it, this approach may help curb some new-RV quality anxiety. The downside is: I think dealers don't rent out every model they sell, they only come available every 6 months (or however long they rent them), and probably not all dealers get into the rental biz...which all together limits your options.

I always appreciate the research and information that you share with your audience. I certainly hope the RV manufacturers are feeling the pain with poor sales numbers. They have, year after year, produced low quality, over priced units that won't hold up to the standards that should apply when their customers over pay for junky products. RV customers have been sold a cheap bill of goods for far too long. I would never, ever consider purchasing a new RV. Again, thank you for your useful information and I am sorry you were one of those customers that got bit by greedy, unethical RV manufacturers. The gig is up for them! The party is over! The poor quality issues are very real, yet my experience (4 travel trailers over 16 plus years) is that they are much, much worse than they used to be. My model years have been 2007, 2016, 2021 and 2022. I had no warranty issues with the 2007, a few rather trivial warranty issues with the 2016, numerous warranty issues with the 2021, and rather catastrophic issues with the 2022 (the entire floor was just replaced at the factory). Sadly, you have to have courage and tenacity to buy an rv these days.

John, I also had to invest significant time and effort to address the floor sag on our 2020 rPod 176, all because Forest River failed to incorporate some inexpensive outriggers on the frame to hold up the side walls. I also replaced the China Bomb tires with Goodyear Endurance. I am a senior citizen but the rPod will be my first and last trailer purchase.

I had a new KZ Sportsmen 180 TH purchased right before the pandemic. The only issue I had was some loose screws on the front diamond plate. I traded it is on a Jayco JayFlight 224 BH in 2021. The only issue I have had was a need to replace a side marker light that cost $26. Both units did not have slides. It seems slides are always an issue so I avoid units with slides.

Hi John, Our RV adventures are on hold until manufactures get their quality control figured out. I liked the comment I read about using a manufacturer’s service center for repairs. In our experience, dealer service centers aren’t in any hurry to make repairs and get the RV back to the customer.

When you buy a brand new car the dealership wants you back to sell you another one within the next 10 years. The dealership takes care of your vehicle, gives you a good service, takes care of the warranty repairs for you etc. Your dealership wants your friends and your relatives to become his customers. The opposite of the RV dealerships and manufacturers. I have the feeling that they don’t want you back. If you are not skilful with your hands, DON’T BY AN RV ! Quality is awful, QC doesn’t exist, I have the feeling that all of them have been assembled on a Friday afternoon ! Sincerely I think European made RVs are high end, better quality, and very well made. Wake up THOR, Europe is on it’s way here in America. THOR bought almost every brand of RVs and this is what happens when companies do so: the quality diminishes and the prices increase. I buy RVs because I love camping, not because I love RVs. What is the most common subject in a campground… Does it leak ?

Thanks for all the data, John. Avoiding a slide has paid off for us; no leaks so far. Although we have had to replace several parts in our 2007 travel trailer and repair others after lots of miles, the money spent is almost nothing compared with outlay for a newer model if we could even find one that offers a twin axle, a full queen bed, a dry bath, sufficient headroom for a 6’2” guy and yet has a low enough weight to tow with an older Pilot. If anyone has ideas, I am open to suggestions.
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci Жыл бұрын
That is a hard list to fill. I had an older Pilot with the 4WD that could tow 4,500 lbs. Sounds like keeping your trailer in good shape is a good idea. Besides the Ember, the slides on my other RVs have work fine long term. It would be much easier and less risky to not have a slide if possible. All the best!

Retired in Nov of 22 and I’ve been researching RVs since. It’s a jungle of information and quite frankly I am nervous to spend upwards of 6 figures for what seems to be the highest quality and most durable trailers on the market. Interest rates, poor quality and horror stories like yours have kept me from doing so. I do like RVs with slides, but realistically the Airstream and the new overbuilt off-road composite trailers on the market seem to be the most durable and retain their value the most. Still frustratingly wrestling with what to purchase. 😩

John. I have a 2022 micro Minnie bh2100. Winnebago put a residential electric refrigerator in it. No gas option. Winnebago will not stand behind the refrigerator. I have made numerous calls on it. The fridge takes all the power. It will work only 5 hours on a 12 volt battery. I have 2 batteries. It has a190 watt solar panel on the roof. I also use a 90 watt plug in panel. That is 280 watts of solar. The only power to the unit is the solar. The unit is advertised for boondock camping. You cannot boondock camp in it. For years I have boondock camped. This the first year that I have had a fridge that does not work and uses all the power. You cannot use the heat or any other electric. The fridge keeps the batteries in a discharge condition. It has ruined my batteries. The batteries now do not hold a charge. I had the unit plugged in for two weeks and the day I took it off the batteries went down to showing bottom. The fridge makes the trailer useless for camping. The same as tent camping except you can hookup and pull. I have a 2400 Cummins generator that will not run the ac and fridge. It will stop charging. It cannot take the load. I have used that generator to run a fridge,ac,or microwave before this trailer. This trailer that is advertised for boondock camping CANNOT be used for boondock camping. That is fact. Do not buy to do this type camping. It is only good for hookup camping. Winnebago will not fix their problem by exchanging for a gas/electric fridge. This unit is junk to buy and use as intended. At 30-40 degrees I have to use my portable gas buddy. All night no heat,get up in morning and start buddy heater at 30-40 degrees. Not the convenience you expected in having a travel trailer. This is in Alaska. 22-23 hours of light. If it does not work here,it will not work anywhere else as a trailer to boondock. I am going to have to finish the season with this piece of crap and when I get back sell it. The outdoor mountain or backcountry are true boondock trailers. Spend the more money and buy them. You will be happy boondocking. This Winnebago is $44,000 msrp new. So spend 10 more or so and do not have the disappointment and frustration of Winnebago. And Winnebago does not stand behind their product. Do not be lied to about that. Dawn thing is not working now. My ice cream is melted. It also will not run when batteries are low,cannot start up or keep running. Needs excessive power not used in ordinary camping units.
@MichaelWilson-vf8zn
@MichaelWilson-vf8zn Жыл бұрын
The fridge you mention is not residential.....it's just a 12v compressor fridge, which many manufacturers have gone to.......and like you mentioned, it has caused problems with the boondocking crowd. The only way to fix the problem is to add more and better batteries, plus solar to keep them topped up. Then you can boondock with it.

I have a gas/electric fridge in my Keystone Bullet and would never change it. My Ember had a similar 12v fridge which was loud and it drained the 4 x 100 watt lithium batteries pretty quickly when not plugged in. I never understood this decision by Ember given that the unit is supposed to be for off-grid. I guess they are trying to move away from propane components to be more eco friendly?

It certainly is very discouraging and frustrating to have a brand new RV and have the poor craftsmanship ruin the enjoyment of camping. I had a similar experience, though not to the degree you have with your RVs, when I purchased a new 2021 Lance. There were a number of nuisance issues that surfaced during my 1 year of ownership. The shower leaked. The stove never worked. The 3-way refrigerator really only worked when plugged in. Just a bunch of things like that. The worse part of it, though, was the dealer experience. The dealer would keep the trailer for literally weeks, then say it was ready for pickup, only to find on my next camping trip that the same issues persisted. Every time I would go camping, something wouldn't work. I finally had enough and sold it. I bought an Oliver Travel Trailer directly from Oliver in Tennessee. I've had that trailer now for 6 months, driven it from Tennessee back to Arizona, and just recently completed a 3,000 mile roundtrip to Oregon. The trailer has worked flawlessly. Molded fiberglass trailers are not cheap, but they are far superior to conventionally-built trailers, and Olivers in particular, at least in my opinion, are among the very best you can buy.

So now the industry is adopting the Korean car manufacturer's strategy of a 10-year warranty...great, so instead of actually improving quality we'll just supply you 10 years worth of band aids that we MIGHT give you depending on the terms of the warranty. How about a strategy where you improve quality and then deliver on that promise by offering a "no questions asked" warranty that puts you as the manufacturer on the hook? That's asking too much of these guys.

I recommend that you stop relying on AAA data. It's not reliable. Get your fuel statistics direct from the EIA. I do not disagree about quality issues at all, and they existed before the pandemic builds highlighted it. However, your thought about it being the obscured factor for decline is not so. At least not directly. That obscured factor is two-fold being 1) the pre-pandemic subculture of RVing's rhythm of upgrading units, and 2) negative dealer experience.
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci Жыл бұрын
I am unclear what you mean by Point 1. Are you saying that some RVers upgraded regularly pre-pandemic and it stopped post pandemic? If so, why the pre-pandemic decline in production in 2018-2019? Further explanation would be appreciated. In Point 2, about negative dealer experience, are you saying poor dealer experience is a reason for post pandemic decline in current production and this is a greater reason than poor quality?
@robv4053
@robv4053 Жыл бұрын
@@JohnMarucci Point 1: 2018-2019 was in the normal rhythm of trending a production low because of the upgrading cycle for what was the subculture size before social media and the pandemic turned RVing into trendy. The manufacturers knew exactly where they were and ordered raws accordingly. What happened with pandemic demand is the anomaly and we’ll all have to see what the new norm is after ~5 year stabilization. What is clearly already showing is that pandemic buyers are leaving the bloated subculture for many reasons. Now post pandemic, we are seeing the market adjust, and a sharp decline (it will be a trough) after a surge with unfavorable economic conditions is always the outcome in product manufacturing. The cost of money has increased and reduces accessibility to potential new owners but also turns away those considering an upgrade. So now we are back in times where a salesperson has to earn a sale, and polls run at every major show highlighted what those of us long-haulers have seen occurring for two+ decades - increasingly bad dealer experience from the initial contact, through the sales process, and the after-the-sale service. Tying to your points about quality, lack of dealering backing and timely response/repair reduce desirability. Now let's talk about the difference in consumer perception of quality versus the manufacturer. The consumer views RVs like automobiles - that's been established multiple times across the decades. However, they are not! They are more like residential homes. Why? In automotive manufacturing, every single part and component is specified by the designer, and they are provided by third-party suppliers to specification and incorporated into the manufacturing of a finished product. This is why the automobile manufacturer offers long-term bumper-to-bumper warranties. By large, mass production RV manufacturing is more an assembly of off-the-shelf parts developed by others following one of two standards (both weak IMO). So, more like a residence built with block, dimensional lumber, sheathing, wrap, siding, roofing and finishes all produced by others and built to building code (strength of which varies in the US) and then loaded with mechanicals and appliances by others. So, your RV gets an initial warranty from the "assembler" just like a new home. After that, then you have your individual warranties for appliances, mechanicals, roofing, etc. just like a home. So, the consumer has a mindset that an RV is like an automobile and should be fairly reliable out of the box and should be serviceable at any brand dealer. Obviously, not the case. RV manufacturers, like all manufacturers, have an acceptable failure rate and those rates consider what THEY did wrong and not went wrong with the installed components made by others. So, as the consumer, you want to believe that they account for every failed suspension, frame, refrigerator, air conditioner, slide controller, slide motor, roof fan, tank, awning, converter, range, microwave, and on and on, but they don't. No different than a home builder who built by Code would. Right or wrong is not my point here, but what is the point the statistics used in the RV industry don't show a manufacturer quality problem as bad as the consumer perceives. Arguably, if you consider the volume of pandemic builds, the actual number of units, versus the acceptable failure rate, I would wager it's didn't move the needle but maybe a percentage. Now component failures, I'm sure they're double digit increases! Take for instance your personal experience with Ember. Your issues were very frustrating to you, but none particularly serious and the manufacturer worked with you after your sort of lukewarm dealer experience. You pointed to quality-rightly so, and have the position that they basically should know better by now and the public is the beta tester. Well, it's always been that way in the RV industry! Roll back 20+ years with the introduction of the hybrid TT. Every single maker, every single model had problems with bunk ends leaking and have re-thought the doors and seals many, many times such that there were still issues on them ten years later and even some today! Consumers WANT the RV industry to like the automobile industry, but that will not happen any time soon. The fact is consumers are NOT the RV manufacturers' customers (direct to consumer like Luxe and SpaceCraft are few). The dealers ARE the manufacturers' customers.
