RV Totally Stranded For 25 Hours...What Happened?? (My 96 Newell Coach Broke Down!)

I was on my way back to Dallas after filming the Newell Factory Tour video when my coach just completely shut off with no warning near Tulsa Oklahoma. Luckily I was able to coast to (sort of) a safe spot on the shoulder. I couldn't even go get myself parts with the Escalade because it still had a blown up alternator from filming That Dude In Blue video at ICC!
Needless to say I learned a lot that day...Hopefully my trials and tribulations here can save someone else a future headache!!

part of troubleshooting is part swapping. New engines do have technology to assist you with "codes". He was going to "swap a wire" to test his theory. Who knows if he would have swapped a fuel pump if it was not swapped prior. Experience is the last thing you get when you need it.

Labor refund and a profuse apology. The tech although incorrect had good faith belief he diagnosed properly. I currently have an M2 Business Class Freightliner that has a shut down, crank, no start at work. It will fire on ether but will not run. I'm sure it's an ECM issue because the code flashing on the dash says No Eng... Once I find the part that's lying to the ECM, it'll be fixed... LOL

Shit happens , l've own big trucks for 25 years and stuff like this happens all the time . You handled it well , at least you know your fuel transfer pump is new , l just replaced mine 2 weeks ago . I had same thing happen to me when l bought this peterbilt 11 years ago . It just shut off going down the road , checked ground cables all the typical things couldn't find anything . Called service truck and he checked everything l checked , he called his shop and then he checked my fuse panel and found the fuse to the ECM had fallen out . He plugged it back in started the truck and handed me a bill for $350 . Same thing happened 6 years later and I knew where to look and sure enough fuse had fallen out . Live and learn they say , enjoy your video's and the adventures . Life on the road is always a adventure , its frustrating at times but you have to always take it as its dealt to you .

I feel your pain Mitch; lost my fuel pump in the panhandle of Florida. Cost of the pump on an M11 450, just a little over $500. At least you got the labor you paid back, but normally, once a part like that is put on, there are no returns. However, you have a spare. We had a coil replaced on our aqua hot and there was nothing wrong with it, but ate the $300 for that little bugger! If we are ever in need of a mechanic in Oklahoma, will definitely give that mobil tech a shout out for sure! Lucky you found him and that he is also honest and not trying to rip you off with a new ECM, they aren't cheap!

I own a small trucking company, most annoying thing other than trying to find good drivers, is paying for others incompetence when fixing things. I have been through many shops, finally found an old timer working out of his truck. Does great work and is cheap. Sucks you're out the $700 and 25hrs when it was literally a 15min fix.

Those JST pins are super common in the RC world. Hansen hobbies has a killer kit with ratcheting crimpers but they're all available on Amazon too. As for the fuel pump a labor refund is fair enough. Not much goes wrong on 60 series but cam sensor (behind the air compressor) and the ECM fuse holders that are at the batteries, not in the body harness. I've lost one before and ended up limping 150 miles on 3 cylinders. What a slow trip that was lol.

@@neliosamch3195 Honesty at a dealership is like expecting change from your kids when you don't ask for it back. Lol You might get it, but probably not. Hahaha... Unfortunately I have not had the luxury of an honest dealership in my area and I have moved quite a few times in the past 35 years. Most dealer service centers typically only have one or possibly two senior techs that actually know what they are doing, the rest are just cheaply paid underlings doing what the dealership tells them to do. Warranty work? Not if they help it. Highest book rate, but quickest cheapest actual repair possible. Very little integrity if any at all. I typically recommend the local race shops instead because they may not have diesel knowledge, but they usually know who does.

I like your down to earth, sensible and no nonsense channel. The first clue was on the sudden cut out of the engine, a fuel issue would have had some warning, i.e. stuttering, loss of power or acceleration. So as in all things, the guys doing the fixing should ask for the history of the problem. Then with the application of more common sense eliminated the obvious. Your second tech went straight to the heart of the problem, electrical, he also offer a no cure no pay option, excellent. The first guy came straight away, very good too, but only if he had the right tools and fix. Everyday is a school day, I have learned it is always easier to critique than to do, so hats off the the guys who came to your rescue. All the best and good luck for the future, stay safe in the current pandemic crisis by taking all reasonable precautions Don (from Scotland)

be sure to get the proper crimper for those connectors!! Look at a power probe, it allows you to insert (self powered) 12v into connectors like that using a probe.

I guess I would try to look at this man, your fuel pump wasn't bad but who's to say it wouldn't have went out a month later. You got a brand new one so that's one thing you shouldn't have to worry about now. Just trying to raise your spirit..ha ha. Nice ride though...love it.👊

So you had no power to the injection pump fuel shut off solenoid. Your lift pump was sending fuel but the IP wasn’t sending it to the injectors. You can test that by removing the power connection to the solenoid on the Injection pump when you reconnect it you should hear a click. No click either the solenoid is bad or it has no power. Lift pumps don’t fail that often.

Found yourself a good guy there. I was thinking electrical as well because of sudden failure no surging and the age of your coach. Same thing happens on other DDEC modules.

My initial guess before I even went outside wasn’t too far off from the actual issue 😂

Power and grounds are notorious failure points on motorhomes and buses. Many vehicle manufacturers do not follow component manufacturer recommendations for installation of their products.

Figured that was going to happen with the first dude. I’ll tell you about that when you’re in Tulsa for RMRW
