We did about 2 years ago… we have a Ram 2500 (8 ‘ bed crew cab) with our 26’TT…. It truly made us a bit antsy! We did take it slow and rested/cooled the brakes regularly. Not something I don’t care to do it again! Loved our activities, not the drive. Blessings for you both!

I live under 100 Miles from Teton Pass and have traveled over it many times. Only once, pulling a small 5er, never again. It's too much fuel and wear and tear when you can bypass via Alpine and Snake River. Also, once, running empty in a gas truck, my cats plugged on the downgrade and ultimately destroyed the engine.

You should use your exhaust brake at all times, and you should turn your trailer brake controller up to ten! I am a retired RV transport driver. I have been on every road in this country and never had any brake problems. Use the transmission, engine brake and go slow.
@jimandellenmeadows6244
@jimandellenmeadows6244 Ай бұрын
No! No, you should not just turn your brake controller ten. That's a disaster waiting to happen. Your brake controller should be adjusted to have balanced braking across all your brake. Once you have established the correct braking the only adjustments needed are when you have significant changes in weight.
@jeffmockus5400
@jeffmockus5400 Ай бұрын
If one set of brakes are adjusted more than the other it will heat up first and start to get weak. Then the other set will follow and overheat. Then your knuckles will start glowing in the dark! Not to start trash talking here but I believe Cummins has the best compression brakeing in the business.

We have towed our 5er with our F350 SRW and it’s ok with braking. We now pull with our RAM DRW, night and and day difference with down and dirty power and shifting! And exhaust brake is top of the diesel truck world, we typically have to accelerate down hills because the engine brake is so efficient!

Ram Cummins Eng Brake is Great, best in class for years; although the new 2023-24 Ford 6.7 has Great Eng Brake, greatly improved from previous generations. Some say same, better or not as good to Cummins.

Cummins has the best exhaust brake, I'm a crane operator, and my crane is close to 130,000 lbs. and it holds down on %10 grades. it's the x12. the x15 is better.
@dougcjohn

@@JustinHallowesOutdoorsagree, it's great and it was way ahead of GM & Ford. Have you examined newer Ford Eng Brake, based on several recent tests by various reviewers the Ford Eng Brake is greatly improved. Operates / Activates a little different than Cummins but still highly effective. Regardless of payload type, both handle the weight nicely.

Last time we were through there, we went into the park via the West Yellowstone gate on US 20, then turned South on US 191 running our 40ft Kountry Star plus a 20ft car trailer with toads. Never encountered any road restrictions, and the US20/191? is mostly a "water route" with no serious grades....... Getting ready to make that run again in a couple weeks, as we are flying to Seattle and picking up our 71 F250/390.... as always... enjoy the life... we do

We took our F-250 (gasser) with our 5th wheel last year over the Teton Pass and for the first time in a long time, I too was "white knuckling" it. I didn't have so much of an issue going downhill since I put the trans. in manual and stayed in 2nd and 3rd gears. I also just had the brakes on the F-250 replaced with Akebono pads (not a sponsor). They are a superior brake pad and didn't have any "brake fade" on hard braking. It was going uphill that we had a bit of a struggle as we were getting passed by just about everyone but that's okay. We made in in/out of Jackson and had a great time while there.

@@timsmith1160 F450 Crew Cab long box makes for a poor daily driver once you get to a destination. If you want to do some exploring local areas, back roads or even running to Walmart sucks in such a long truck. I know from experience it's tuff to find parking for something that big in Jackson.

dont pump brakes or called fanning the brakes ,when u fan the brakes 4 a long time air getting in there causing the brake get hotter, its like a fire burns gets bigger with more air, so just hold a little pressure on the barke to the bottom of the hill..

Sorry but if you had your engine break on and were smoking your truck brakes, you probably have no business hauling that trailer. I rarely have to touch the brakes on my Ram. The engine brake does everything that needs to be done.

What's your trailer weigh? Any 17k+ trailer on this pull is going to struggle. That momentum is probably 15k empty.

Unless your in a 18 wheeler with an automatic transmission. That Jake break will not hold it back by its self. And a Jake break in a pickup is not even close to and 18 wheeler
