Great Panel Ed!!

Good job setting up this cockpit. It shows a lot of thought (and money) was put into its design and layout. Below are suggestions, not criticisms, as each experimental pilot should layout their cockpit however they are most comfortable. A good rule for cockpit panel design is to follow is the aviate, navigate and communicate hierarchy. This hierarchy places flying related (aviate) items at the top or front of a panel, navigation items next followed by communication related items last. If those rules were applied to this panel, the auto-pilot could be the top item in the center stack with the critical electrical switches (covered on) placed on either side of it. Next could be the MFD for navigation followed by the comm panel with the GTN650 radio at the bottom of the stack. Another rule that makes completing checklists easier is layout the switches from left to right in the order they are listed on the checklist. Critical checklist items like the flaps, should get a lighted handle or switch, that shows status by color if possible. For example, when the airspeed falls below 80 kts (arbitrary) the flaps handle could flash red if not in the down position. Once down it could turn steady green. The handle could also flash red when approaching the max flaps speed (within 10 kts) in the down position. The handle light could then turn off once up in the climb/cruise mode or once below minimum airspeed indication. For switches and buttons on the stick, recommend the aviate, navigate and communicate related switch hierarchy top to bottom also. Auto-pilot and trim hat should be at the top of the stick. The navigation functions could be moved to the four-way switch, toggling the MFD between traffic and terrain modes with decrease and increase range left to right. The pinkie switch would be ideal for comm frequency switching of radios, toggling thru all radio frequencies in sequence (COM1 ACT, COM1 STBY, COM2 ACT, COM2 STBY). Again these are recommendations. Whatever you do, chair fly the cockpit considering each phase of flight and think it thru. The most important thing is keep the things you use most close at hand.

Wow, what a panel! My only change would be to move the flap switch to the throttle quadrant area. This would negate the need to move your hand away from the engine controls during the to/ldg portions of flight.

I´m from Germany and currently waiting for the empennage kit and tools from Clevelandtools 😊. Also am thinking of using the Garmins. I´m loocking forward to start building the "dream". When I get to the point installing engine and electrical, I´d love to talk with you about your recommends to the installations. I will install a BRS-Prachute. Awesome guy, i need you to set my panel up

My RV-9A has dual screen G3X touch, GTN650, and a G5 for standby. You and I have lots of stylistic differences, neither one's choices being absolutely right or wrong, but here are a few key points you might choose to consider (and you have put a lot of thought into your panel!) * I use the data bar on the G3X for next waypoint information, including vertical speed required for the descent, and I used the GTN650 default nav page for all of the destination information. I also have reprogrammed the GTN default nav page so I can select approaches from there and go to the flight plan. And I keep the data bar available for parameters, and eschew remote avionics, especially when there's panel space available. * One concept I did not see in your panel is the concept of flow for doing checklists. You've got fuel pump on the stick (not my choice) plus switches on the panel and light switches on the overhead. On my old RV-4, with all the electrical in three rows of three switches (small panel), the landing checklist in part was top two rows of switches, all on. Simple to do, simple to confirm -- all in one place. * One problem with customized panels in general is the learning curve for other pilots or mechanics, especially when time comes to sell the plane. Do you have a laminated card that has all of the infinity grip switches? I carry with me (on a pdf on my cell phone) the serial port interconnects on my installation as well as all the configuration information, so if I'm at an avionics shop on the road, unexpectedly, they have all the information they need to work on the avionics. I also have all my model numbers and serial numbers. I don't have nearly as much complexity in my panel, so the cockpit checkout is much simpler. Having worked in cockpit design groups for two jet manufacturers, and spent time with a major training vendor, I'm heavily biased towards simplicity and learnability -- but that's for a different target audience. Would be fun to discuss a lot more points some time. Enjoy your -10! I wish I had more room in my -9A. Ed

Your panel is very inspired, to put it mildly. Regarding the backup battery, if you're in VMC, you can fly with nothing but the ignition system working, so I assume you designed your backup as something to get you from IMC into VMC. Would you try to fly an approach using just the G3X or do you have a radio or IFR navigator on the backup system? There are so many little design decisions to make and you clearly put a lot of thought into them all so I'm curious to hear how you addressed them. I have produced some of the features and designed installations (as you are showing) for a customer with special use P-3 Orions who are constantly asking for a lot of "goodies" including T2CAS and ADS-B plus a lot of audio/radio, FMS nav, and autopilot (analog and digital) interface. I am no less very much amazed at your installation, knowing what is involved with designing, building, and wiring all of those featues. Just about everything I did was actually installed by technicians, so my experience with the task of installation is not well developed. Obviously, your panels have a LOT of self-designed features, that any pilot would love to have. I was wondering how much of the massive systems interface is available Off the Shelf. Also, did you design this and have somebody build part of it or was it all done yourself? And, where did you find the time to do all that? I'm sure it is a one of a kind, with very few similar systems matching in the world. I am in awe. Considering an RV something, still in the decision mode as to exactly what, between RV7, RV10, or RV12. Would like to find one already built and flyable and go from there with customizing it. Don't need a 4 seater, but like the overall capacity of the 10.

Does the blank panel space below the autopilot panel allow enough room (width, depth) for an external transponder and/or external com2? Do you have a LED ribbon under the glare shield that light up the panel? Does the front heat apply heat to the windscreen? I've read that the leading edge landing lights may not provide a good amount of light to the centerline of a runway at night. Do you find this to be true? I see there is a cowl landing light that can be mounted additionally. Do you have an air conditional mounted? Obviously it is up to the individual, but do you find that it is not too uncomfortable sans a/c? They're pricey, which is why I ask. Very educational video. You and your wife built a very nice aircraft.

Beautiful setup. I just do t understand what the benefit of the VPX is.. Yeah electronic CB, but I feel it's a single point of failure compared to the old style mechanical CB setups. I imagine if that VPX went up in smoke, you would have nothing. If everything was on mechanical CB's, you could isolate systems, no?

Would you recommend your choice of audio panel for RVs? We currently have a GNC255A nav/com, which has an integrated intercom in our RV-7A and it's really not meant for an airplane as noisy as ours is. I would think an RV-10 is similar in terms of cabin noise. The problem is that the squelch is too sensitive (randomly picks up engine noise) and at the same time it's not sensitive enough (when speaking sometimes the squelch will cut off). We're looking for a better audio panel to fix that, and so far the contenders are the PS Engineering PM1000, PM1200, and PMA5000EX. Looks like yours has automatic squelch control rather than manual control but I'm hesitant about those type because I don't know how well they work in noisy planes.
