A 25 mile, 3 day, 2 night backpacking trip to Virginia's most wild and remote State Park. Tent camped both nights on the beach, with incredible sunset and sunrise views and the amazing sound of the ocean. Tucked in between the Back Bay Wildlife Refuge and the North Carolina, False Cape is logistically is more difficult to get to than any other state park since you can't drive to it. And the ways to get there changes based on the calendar and if Wildlife Refuge is open or closed. Stay tuned and I will tell you how exactly to get there, what to expect when you arrive, and what it's like to camp on the beach.

What a great area to camp. The views were amazing especially the sunsets & sunrises. Wow! Sand is tough to hike in. Well done. Best part of this place for me is having all to yourself. Awesome. Thanks for sharing your adventure here. Have a great day.

Etched in my memories forever that sunset and sunrise. Sand is hard to hike in but not too bad if you do it rarely, ha ha. This time of the year is the best time of the year to go, so there aren't many people around. Just the way I like it. ~RVA~

Omg...to go to sleep with that sound. What's the reason for not bringing in the back-packers in? Wow, now I must go! You have a good head on your shoulders putting the reflected tape on your tent. The sun set & moonlight, postcard perfect! ❤

They want the people who go there to work for it to get there and appreciate the journey I suppose. Maybe then more people will help to keep clean and wild. The tram is only for day use from April to Sept. If you want to camp there you gotta move your feet to get there! I was actually going originally for a winter tour on the tram of the Wild Life Refuge and then the rangers were taking people to search for owls. But they wouldn't allow backpackers on the tour So I didn't go. That's ok, I was happy to hike in. Great experience. I will def do it again but only in the cooler months because in the summer the temps are brutal!

Have a great new years, Ceri and Kat ❤ 👍 ☕ 🎁 p.s loved your rucksack and aviator combo, bossed it!

There are so few untouched places like this these days to venture. I adore that this coastal area is protected and is natural and wild as it should be. Kat, the wild horses roam at the border of North Carolina and Virginia. The male stallions swim in the ocean around a fence that actually goes out in the ocean to bring their girls over with them. But they keep relocating them back to NC. I was hoping to secretly see some or the humpback whales migrating. But there are few other great places to see wild ponies in our state. I guess I will have to go check out those places. I love doing premieres just for that reason - the amazing people. Hanging out with my buddies and like-minded outdoor lovers alike. With all of Kat's good cooking, I don't know how anyone could stay awake for a premiere but so happy you both did. ~RVA~

It's pretty cool to have a backpack trip hiking along a beach. Amazing to have such a lonely, serene, and pristine on the East Coast. Hiking in that soft sand is hard work! Oh man, full moon, amazing sunrise, someone is living right! Oh yeah, camping on a beach and sand gets everywhere. We often camp along rivers in interior Alaska on big silt bars, and it gets in everything! What a great trip! Want to take this moment to wish you a happy new year, and many more good adventures for 2022!

I was a biology major in college and took a herpetology class where we would go pick up snakes in nature (nonvenemous ones). But I developed a deeper appreciation for the these herps. Just wanted to see one from a distance. This time of the year if you did see one it would be super slow due to the cooler outdoor temps. Have New Year you too and congrats on your 1k!!!

Beach front campsite sounds nice and that was the perfect spot to pitch your tent - what a view! It looks like you had the whole beach to yourself, well, apart from the local residents in their cars. Loved the colours in the sky of the setting sun but that was blown away by the sunrise on day 2, what a perfect way to start the day!! The restrooms looked a bit sparse mind but I could live with it for sunrises/sets like that all the time. I have seen seals in the sea and on the shore but to see a whale would have been mind blowing and after that plodge in the sea, looked nice warning for dinner. Shame the sea fret had to come in and spoil things but you still got that amazing footage from your first couple of days. Happy New Year to you both, cheers Alan

I live in VB and camp out there a few times a year. It's a really amazing spot. I've had backpackers tell me "there's no views like the mountains out there though..." but to me there's not views in the mountains like you have there. On a clear night you have all the stars. And waking up to the sunrise and dolphins jumping is an experience in itself. Every time we stay there it's completely different. I'm glad to see you enjoying it.

I didn't think dogs were allowed there. Is that because of the wildlife refuge? If you kayaked in you wouldn't have to go through it, so that must be it. I am so glad my video helped. It was such a great trip! Fun to make a premiere of it! 😁 Walking in the sand really looked very hard! But sleeping on the beach amazing! Especially with the beautiful sunset and sunrise on your first night out! That reflection in the water was so beautiful! I don't know about the coyotes so close to my tent, but dolphins won't be so close to your tent, except if you pitch your tent too close to the water and you end up in the water at high tide! 😂 Bit foggy and a lot of sand everywhere, but a lovely 3 days out! I have never done a beach walk or sleeping on the beach, maybe I should go and hike on an Island some day! 😂 All the best! I have to go to sleep now and start dreaming about hiking! Kaat

I want to also take the trail to the monument down on the VA/NC border too. I just came back from Assateague and camping on the beach if that interests you are all. The video comes out on Wed night. I lived in Munden Pt, across Back Bay from the park, in 1988. On July 4th, 1988 (89?), my buddy and I boated across Back Bay, and tied up at at beat up dock that is likely long gone, and walked across the dunes to set up our campsite. July 4th weekend, perfectly blue sky, and not another soul on the beach, in either direction. We were imagining the melee taking place up north at VA Beach, while we had the entire beach to ourselves, watching the osprey and dolphins frolic. Note: keep the beers on the down low, the Rangers are a PIA in this regard. Note: not allowing car traffic and forcing campers to hike in is brilliant, although I suppose us boating in was cheating. So, don't do as I did... ;-)

Thanks once again for previewing a trip on my list. This is the year I'm forcing it to happen. I save my winter 3 day trips for WV (I did the Cranberry Wilderness last week). Since a lot of roads will be closing in WV I'm going to copy your trip next. Tracking coyotes sounds like a great time filler. I'll bring my spotter scope. Fog side, is moisture a problem at night? I'd like to take the fly off but don't want wet down. Great idea on string lights, I almost got ran over in the NC barrier islands.
@RVAHikerGirl
@RVAHikerGirl 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I know what you mean Gary. I'm not heading to the mountains this week with the road closures and it's even suppose to be -1 in SNP. Actual temp not wind chill, so I need to find another place myself. Night 1 I slept with the fly off and no issue of condensation because you have the ocean breeze to keep the air moving. (JByrd and I both have down bags) Night 2 yes for. sure with the heavy fog. Deer, coyotes, some fox, raccoons, you could see all the prints in the sand. Just put those reflectors up and bring yourself some lights to put up. It's recommended to only put up 2 reflectors around your tent, but I put up 4. You probably won't see anyone, like on my trip. Let me know if you go and how you liked it.

Great video! One of my former scouts and his family did this trek and the first thing they saw was a sign that said "Caution, Water Moccasins" and there was one literally laying in front of the sign. What is the drinking water situation at False Cape? I've heard you have to pack in your water for miles.
@RVAHikerGirl
@RVAHikerGirl 2 жыл бұрын
There is only 1 place to get water in the park and that's at the visitors center. You don't have to carry a lot with you when you hike in. You can get it there. But there is no water at the next camps sites down 2 miles by beach or about 6 miles by trail. You have to load up before you go down further south. There is a pump at the False Cape Landing campsites but the water isn't treated and believe me you don't want to drink it. It's brown and didn't look good at all and they say it's just for washing dishes or rinsing off. Happy New Year John! ~RVA~

So happy you found the channel. Appreciate the sub. Mosquitos and black flies can be pretty bad in this area. The cooler months honestly is the time of the year when I would recommend going. There are fewer ppl as well in the off season. Beach hiking in the full sun in the hot summer would be brutal - hope that helps. BTW no dogs are allowed for part of this hike through the Wildlife preserve, that includes the beach. I do remember several signs about that. There’s no way to get to False Cape SP without going through the preserve.

The only water available at the park is at the visitors center on day 1. I had to carry a lot with me down to the 2nd campsite at False Cape Landing. As a disabled camper, it bums me out when things are not accessible. I can do some things (I walk with a cane), but this park sounds like it wouldn’t be for me. Love the vids tho!
@RVAHikerGirl
@RVAHikerGirl 2 жыл бұрын
This park is accessible for disabled persons, but only during certain months of the year. They have a tram that operates taking people to the visitors center and on a tour through the Back Bay Wildlife Area. There are paved trails there as well. However the majority of this park is coastal maritime environment, meaning largely made up of sand. So you would have to be able to walk in the sand for miles and miles to access certain parts of this park. They allow primitive camping, but to keep the the area in this wild state, they don't allow rvs or car camping as other parks do. Its just a very protected area, especially since the Back Back Wildlife Refuge is right next door and there main focus is protecting the fragile marine environment and wildlife. I believe all other VA State Parks that have camping have wheelchair accessable sites. I can completely understand what your saying though if you wanted to camp there. Very happy to hear that you enjoyed the video. Appreciate you stopping by. ~RVA~

@RVAHikerGirl
@RVAHikerGirl Жыл бұрын
There is a tram that will take you down if you don’t have a backpack. They don’t transport campers or backpackers on the tram. Only day visitors. The tram only runs in certain months of they year. When it’s not running, the only way to get to the park is to walk or ride a bicycle. It’s remote for sure.
