Hey Russ! You made this old man happy as you brought back many good memories. I lived out in Tucson back in the early 70s... 1970s that is. Old Tucson was a place where the tv series "High Chaparral" was filmed. You might remember that program. My wife and I lived on the north end of Tucson and our backyard looked up to Mt. Lemon. Back then, there were no power lines going up there and the cabins where people lived used kerosene lamp and wood burning stoves for heat and cooking. Yes, it did get hot out there in Tucson, so to cool off, we would go UP to the top of Mt. Lemon. In the spring, when it rained in Tucson, you could see it snowing on Mt. Lemon. When the snow melted, the washes ran fast and high. The Rialto Wash was about 100 feet from the back of my home. Keep up the great videos my friend!

Hi Russ. You missed the Desert Museum. A marvelous place. The entrance is a long decline down to the display section. As you walk down that decline hallway they have a brass strip embedded in the concrete floor. Its a Geological Time scale . At the entrance you're at the Precambrian age and way down at the other end in the display room you have a tiny ( quarter inch) section. That's when the age of Humanity began. Kinda puts things in perspective. Then, in the display room is a marvelous display of crystallized mineral specimens (Minerals of Arizona). After that, you go out and see all the animals in the Desert Zoo. You can even get up close to a live Puma cat and lots of other desert animals.

Hi Russ. Saguaro National Park actually has 2 districts - and East district and a West district. The East district of the park is the older part of the park. It is located about 10 miles to the east of Tucson and has a very nice paved scenic drive that is about 8 miles along. You were skirting around the West district of the park on the west side of Tucson, which has a 6 mile unpaved scenic drive. Both scenic drives are worth the trip!! Both districts of the park have visitor centers and nice hiking trails. Next time check out the east side of the park so you can take the van on the paved scenic drive. There is a nice picnic area you can stop at and also a shorter paved interpretive trail. Enjoy your road trip!!

I agree with the comment above. I spent the winter just east of Tucson and had the chance to visit both the East and West Parks. The West was my favourite. The gravel Loop is a must-see. I have a 40ft class A but tow a Jeep Wrangler. The views off of the western Loop that is unpaved are absolutely gorgeous. It includes places to have a picnic or to pull off. I did see a Class C doing the loop so it's doable in your van. But much better in something like the Jeep. It's too bad. You only saw a fraction of what the park has to offer.

I visited Old Tuscon when I was a teenager. They were making a movie there and I got to watch the action and got an autograph from Chill Wills, bet that is a name not very many people remember. They used to make a lot of old cowboy movies there. I also remember the park and the Desert Museum. We had relatives in Tuscon and we took Route 66 to go visit a few times in the 60's.

Thanks for bringing back fond memories of southern Arizona. Last time I visited Saguaro Nat'l Park in July, it was 118 degrees F at 4h00 PM. You can spend a week exploring Saguaro Nat'l Park, I stopped everywhere to take landscape, plants and flowers pictures. It's a good thing you are only in springtime, not too hot and plenty of blooms. If you want to drive East-West through the City of Tucson, there are 3 main roads : 22nd Street, Broadway Street and Speedway Street. Houghton Street is a North-South main thoroughfare leading to the eastern tier of Saguaro Nat'l Park and to the Catalina Highway and up Mount Lemmon. It is evident that the pandemic robbed people of their time getting out of the house and exploring natural parks and monuments, they go everywhere with a vangeance nowadays. "Old Tucson" was used as a filming lot for western T.V. shows, I saw Jack Palance there once (big mean-looking cowboy). After visiting Arizona for 15 times, I know there are two places to go : the Grand Canyon and the Tucson area. RICHARD

@@rogersmith7396 :. When the temps rise, head heavenward to Mt. Lemon. My morning views back in 1980 was looking upward to Mt. Lemon. It was 15 to 20 degrees cooler up there than down in the city. Back then, we would rent horses and spend the day going up the trails and having picnics. Great memories this old man has of those days. At Old Tucson, got to see some filming of the tv series The High Chaparral. The original Old Tucson burned down before the current one was built. Is still worth the trip out there today! Dale

I was there when it was closed but the story boards and photos and glimpses of what Old Tucson looks like was very interesting. Looked like they did rodeos there too. I stayed at Gilbert Ray campground for a week. There's a walking trail in a wash right at the Visitor Centre. Cheers, Steve

Russ, I took this same trip in 2018 and it is nice. If you haven't planned everything out yet, you need to visit a couple of places. One is the Pima Air and Space Museum on the south side of Tucson. It has an airplane graveyard with many different planes, including an SR-71 Blackhawk and one of JFK's Air Force One planes. Also, in addition to all the national parks, monuments and memorials and state parks in this area, take some time to visit the Arizona vineyards. YES, they make wine in Arizona, but it's a dry wine!! 😂😂Check out the Sonoita Vineyard and Winery near Elgin. They offer tours of the winery and it is absolutely fascinating! Don't miss San Xavier del Bac, Tumacacori, Tubac Presidio, Coronado National Memorial, Chiricahua National Monument, Kartchner Caverns, Colossal Caverns, Bisbee and Tombstone!

Tucson Mountain Park opened in 1929 with approximately 20,000 acres. It was the largest county park in the nation, at that time. Old Tucson Studios leased the land in the Tucson Mountain Park. We may have a new company leasing Old Tucson Studios soon. Saguaro National Park was first a National Monument between 1933 and 1993. In 1994 it became Saguaro National Park, which may explain lack of amenities and nearby residences. Love your videos.

One of the best times to visit is in the middle of July during the rainy season when the park turns green, with millions of desert flowers. I prefer the East Saguaro Park as it is near the beautiful Rincon Mountain range that provides a nice back drop.

Yes, and I did not even know they have a rainy season in summer before in the desert. Are you from the Tuscon area?

I have been to the Saguaro NP a couple of times but it never gets old, especially in the spring. Thanks for sharing your drive through the area. Hope to see some video of the Tucson Amtrak station as you pass through town. It is an old beautiful station. Stay safe Russ.

Yeah, Rooster Cogburn's is still there, just south of Picacho Peak. At least it was there 3 years ago when I took the same trip Russ is making. Just south of Picacho Peak. But I took the drive to this Tucson Mountains District of the park going the opposite way he is going, hitting Old Tucson first. However, I hope he goes to the Rincon Mountain District section of the park. That was the original area designated as Saguaro National Monument back in 1933. I liked the Rincon District much more than the Tucson Mountain District, and it seems that there are fewer people out there.

I went to saguaro NP in 2020. I was looking to see the Dollar general on your way there which I saw in your video. Old Tucson was closed when I was there to. The park ranger says it was permanently closed I love your videos I also love seeing your videos in the areas I’ve been

Russ, since you're in the area it would be interesting to get your take on Caballo Loco Ranch RV Park. Bob introduced it to us and it seems like an unusual place.
