My grandmother was a Wanderer and got a hankerin' to GO while living in the PNW in the 70's. She pulled out her USA roadmap, closed her eyes and put her finger down on WILLIAMS, AZ., called it Fate, loaded her car and off she went to live there for a few years. 😁

Russ, I carry an ebike on the back of my class c, and to reduce the cover flapping in the breeze, I use one of the cargo nets for pickup trucks. Works good.

My wife and I are building a Timber Frame cabin 8 miles north of Williams. Our first home after renting our entire lives. Beautiful area, great neighbors, we love it there. Of all the places on earth we could have chosen Williams came out on top. Very similar to the area you chose to Boondock. No water (water haul/rainwater collection) which is a challenge and scares a lot of people. Water table is 3200 ft. so no well, ever. I just see it as a challenge to overcome. We feel like Pioneers in a way. The area still has that feel to it. I'm a Blacksmith, Timber Framer and mill my own lumber. In a way I guess we are. Thanks for the nice tour of Williams. It's even nicer than it looks.

Based on the color alone, I believe the material being mined at 12:45 is volcanic cinders which they use in asphalt paving and also used by itself on unpaved dirt roads and for landscape uses. I've seen it in Arizona, Utah and Nevada because they get it from extinct volcanoes. BTW, great drone footage as always.

I loved this little town of Williams at first sight. Great rest stop on your way to either Kingman (west) or Flagstaff (east) along Interstate-40. Route 66 memorabilia, old stores, full services, the Grand Canyon Railways (the old steam Locomotive # 539 was parked there for many years), it has everything anyone needs when traveling. Plus it looks a lot like the New England town of Littleton, New Hampshire, nestled in the White Mountains among the pines, another city dear to my heart. A magnificent video, Russ. Keep it up !! Hey Russ, nice to tour Williams with you today. I've been passing through and staying there for almost 40 years. The last time I caught the Patriot Day Parade and got to see the Bill Williams Mountain Men ride their horses down Main St, fully outfitted in their fur trapper gear--very cool! You mentioned the gift shops with Route 66 memorabilia--I've noticed more and more they all have pretty much the same stuff. If you want a non cookie-cutter souvenir these day you're better off going to an antique store. Until next time, happy trails!

Little history on those Welcome Arches. The posts were former Santa Fe Signal bridges. When the Burlington Northern took over the road, they "standardized" the signals so all the SF signals had to go! Love to that some live on, in a manner of speaking. It's been years, for me, in Williams. Thanks for the memories, Russ.

My neck of the woods. Used to fish a lot at Kiabab lake. It's almost all dried out, now. Camped across from the Lake right where you turned in, b4 I bought property near the Grand Canyon, national park. Lots of good memories there when I full timed in an RV, prior to 2012. Love it out here. No neighbors within a mile on my private property north of your camp spot. Williams, is too expensive for me. I'll drive to flagstaff for my shopping. Save a lot of money doing that.

There is a drawback to the railway RV park and that is that you do get awakened in the middle of the night by train horns as the RV park is right on the train tracks. Otherwise pretty nice. Expensive and crowded. The RV park does have deluxe restrooms but there is a long walk to the pool, which is at the hotel. We have stayed two times in about 6 years. A plus is that this place is in walking distance to the various downtown restaurants shops and the Safeway grocery store. By the way, there is a very nice ACE Hardware store in town with excellent service and nice employees.

Nice trip thru Williams. Thanks, Russ. Incidentally, those photos labelled "1940" ( 03:32 ) are a little misleading. The movie "The Emperor Waltz" with Joan Fontaine was released in 1948, and the car in the lower left-hand corner of the second photo looks suspiciously like a 1949 Ford. Still, a nice glimpse of the past.

It would be a good place to camp out if the town has a big enough grocery store so you are not paying convenuos store prices. We lived close to a town where people stopped on their way to Yosemite. We had to drive thirty something miles into Merced to grocery shop or pay high prices at their only grocery store.
