Can you connect MPPT solar charge controllers together? Yes. Watch this video to learn WHY and HOW TO setup your MPPT solar charge controllers to charge a single battery bank. I'll show you the key components used for this project and how they are all hooked up. Finally, I'll show you the custom rack system I built to hold all of this stuff in my tiny solar compartment.

MORE ABOUT THIS PROJECT
When to use multiple MPPT solar charge controllers?
The primary reason to do this is when you want to charge a single battery bank from more than one solar array. Each solar array should have its own solar charge controller.
How to make multiple MPPT solar charge controllers work together?
Your system should be setup as follows:
(1) Charge profiles should be the programmed the same for all MPPT solar charge controllers
(2) Solar charge controller outputs should be connected in parallel (all negatives joined together, all positives joined together) and positioned at the same distance from the parallel connection.
(3) Follow manufacturer’s recommendation for combining charge controllers (my Victron controllers need to linked together on the same bluetooth network to become aware of each other). The goal is to make sure all charge controllers switch charging phases together.

This type of setup is more common in sailboats where shading from sails and the mast is an issue. Be sure to add a drip line in your wiring though to keep any leaking seawater from running into your controller. Good luck.

William, most Uni-Solar panels are/were amorphous. Perhaps all. That seemed to be there "thing". You will likely get many many years out of a Uni-Solar panel barring any physical damage. Great detailed video with many great ideas. I like the idea of the fan pulling cooler air into that very crowded compartment with multiple heat making devices. I would be tempted to use two fans, one on each vent hole. One drawing cooler air in and the opposite side exhausting the warm air out. Since I live in the southern part of the U.S. that would be a must for me. I was always taught that one of the biggest problems you can have with electronics is HEAT. @poet in a paper bag Sorry you've lost me. I'm not referring to the video. Only to this comment. I was assuming Nofear2trek was talking about having 2 new panels of the same size stacked, so only getting power from one while driving. Then expanding them when parked. So I couldn't see the need for 2 controllers if wired in parallel.

Wow...nice job! Apparently these controllers are designed to be used in this manner yet I believe it could be a mistake to hook up several "old-school" controllers in parallel. Check with the manufacturer of your particular controller. Also, Uni-solar panels will often outperform many panels in shady conditions or if the shade of your antenna (for example) falls across one or more panels. I have four very long Uni-solar panels and although not as flashy as many newer panels...they really work well. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for all the info you provide. I have followed one of your updates. Multiple controllers in a small area. One question I have 3 160w Renogy flexible solar panels in parallel on one Victron 75/15. I also have 1 160w Renogy flexible portable panel I set out on the ground. The three panels are doing great when i plug in the portable into its separate controller my three panels shut down. Shouldn't you be able to have everything plugged in? One array shouldn't shut down the other?

Great setup! What does happen if different brand charge controllers are mixed? Will it still work, less efficiently , or do they just fight each other over modes and screw up the multistage charging?

It pure logic for me that when one or more panels have a different situation regarding light, shadow, amps or voltage, you use a seperate MPPT-Charge Controller. As long as they are able to match the voltage of the battery. Victron Smart MPPT Charge Controllers are the default for doing this also, again pure logic. And no, price is not a reason for buying something else, that would just be very very stupid risk you are taking regaring safety, longevity and efficiency, penny wise, pound foolish. I do this with the panels on my balcony which are not only all different because the size limitation, they also get shading at different moments. Using seperate Victron Smart MPPT charge controllers for each panel is absolutely helping to get the most out of them.

pretty nice use of space there. i like the victron controllers as they dont put off much heat so you shouldnt have too much trouble. i did see, it looks like you have a victron smart battery sense mounted on the top controller. what made you mount the battery temp sensor in with the controllers instead of in with your batteries? i am curious as the controllers want to know the temp of the batteries to adjust the voltage settings based on battery temp. yet with the sensor in with the controllers, i suspect they will be warmer than the batteries and cause an inaccurate volt adjustment that is contrary to what the battery specs would call for? thanks

I always thought that it was imperative to use MPPT with communication ports in order to communicate among all the chargers. I read that Victron 150/100 and 150/70 have VE.CAN which allows to daisy-chain controller. But been able to use two 75/10 Victron in parallel opens many doors to me.

This is a great video. Thank you for sharing. Please help me out though; why do you need to have 3 MPPT charge controllers for an RV? Also, are the charge controllers connected to each other, as solar batteries and solar panels connected in parallel would? I didn't see that on the diagram or during the installation. Lastly, how is the connection from the PV array done? Do you connect 3 sets of solar panels independently to the 3 charge controllers? Cheers!

Do you have a link to the #2 welding cable? Most of the wire I find is really stiff and hard to work with.

Do you find these racing and/or preventing each other from charging? E.g. one goes into float, and forces the other into float too early? Have you tracked the stats of which mppt is producing how much power each day?

I have an extra pwm control can you use it with mppt control or do they not work like you have wired. Would like to add a second panel on the ground.my mppt is a40amp and my pwm is a20amp

They may work together as long as you can program the charge settings so they match. It's worth a try.

Noticed you have a Victron BMS-712. I've setup mine to allow for disconnect / reconnect of my inverter from my lithium batteries, should low SOC, high or low voltages and tempurature be detected. I've also disconnect the solar charger from the batteries on high / low tempuratue. Just needed to add a few medium and a single high current relays. Victron was the only solution I could find that could be configuted the way I wanted to protect my $5150 investment in lithium batteries.

Im considering this controller (the 50amp version) for a new set up with 800ah of lifepo batteries and 1000 watts of solar, they are about double the price of other similar options which may be worthwhile if I can use them without accessories and just use my phone to create the charging profiles, is this possible or would I need that round monitor using and ethernet cable?

Hey Tito, random question. Can the alternator of a truck be plugged into a solar charge controller to regulate charging of a lithium battery bank?

The thin film may be a cigs chemistry, they will output more in low sun, but mono panels will shine , in direct sun! The cigs work well in shade, and not effected as much as mono and poly panels, I wouldn't mind adding a small array of the cigs tech panels, to add more power in early and late day sun.

Are the smaller panel diodes strong enough to block reverse charge from the larger array, particularly when one panel is in the shade, the battery bank is full, and or a smaller amp rated controller is connected with larger controllers? If RV’s are not plugged into a power grid to upload excess energy, then a battery bank dump regulator based on battery bank volt level is needed, or large enough solar panel diodes. I need information in setting up a similar solar design. Thank you.

How do I choose a charge controller amperage? I see renogy has a 20,30 or 40amp version- I only plan on having 1 lithium battery and 200-300watts of solar but have no idea with charge controller to choose.
