Rauh-Welt Begriff (RWB,) is one of the most notoriously successful, yet controversial, Japanese car tuners to exist today. With his army of modified Porsche 911’s, Akira Nakai has built a world famous tuning company-frequently circulating through automotive press giants like Speedhunters, Hoonigan, Illest, Fatlace, and Auto Otaku. From his first Rough World AE86’s, to Porsche 930’s, 964’s, and 996’s, many find his modification techniques to be…. well, rough!

Fun fact: in German "Rauh-Welt Begriff" doesn't really make any sense. When I first read it I was really puzzled. Must be one of those google translate gems.

@@alfredoladino9838r "Rauh-Welt Begriff Sekund Entwicklung" means "Roughly-world term, second development" with "second" in the sense of time like "sixty seconds". "Rauh-Welt" could also be a "Roughworld ...", a world/planet made of "roughness". Yes, doesn't make any sense. "Rauh-Welt Begriff Zweite Entwicklung" means "Roughly world term, second development". I guess what Nakai-San wanted to express is something like "Rauhe Welt - Konzept. Stufe Zwei" so something like "rough world - concept, Mark Two". But as long as hard German words sound cool for you guys, I am fine with "Rauh-Welt Begriff Zweite Entwicklung".

As a former 911 owner, I was never a fan of RWB until watching this video. The process and craftsmanship for these is really cool, and I actually love Rutledge Wood's car. It would win cars and coffee for sure.

That was very interesting, my son and i were at the debut of Nakai-San's first car built in Canada, Royal Ocean in 2013 and since have been to most of the builds in the Vancouver area. I am not a purist or a big Porsche fan but i enjoy the work of Nakai-San. There are a few purists here that have an RWB or two. Due to the Corona virus he has not been here since last December, he is a skilled and humble person. I have his autograph on many items including a lens hood on one of my Nikon lenses. I will likely never have the money to have one made but if did i would have him make a car for me too! He does like his Winstons, Coffee, Sushi etc it is always an event when he comes to town.

Race cars needs to be in “ “‘s in the above statement. These are often built with the tiptronic (underperforming, slow shifting auto) trans and are far from being prepped as a track/race car. All bark no bite (poser) cars are what’s ruining the automotive scene. It misleads perspective enthusiasts and slows the potential for them to become good builders themselves. A body mod for looks alone is like a maturing model desperately attached to their younger appearance. Off putting at best. This is a fad and will pass...along with these cars opportunity for fair value resale. Remember the cringey Gemballa cars? Not many do. Cars of this magnitude should be stimulating on a physical visceral level, not only visually appealing to certain demo’s.

Seeing the 935 and stuff I can really start to appreciate these things. But also, I'm glad Rutledge Wood's one exists because that thing is just really tasteful. Kind of goes to show that Nakai's not just doing it to be controversial but really putting thought into it. Edit: I changed my mind that black Targa and that blue coupe look like a million bucks. That's AMAZING.

My buddy is currently getting a RWB widebody done to his k swapped Porsche. Going to swing by the shop tmr to see Akira working on it tmr, hope he’s willing to sign something for me. Will never sell it just a 1 in a million chance for me. Love how he makes each RWB is custom to the customer, dude gets a idea of your personality then molds it to fit your personality best.

That's all they're there for, these kits are for kids, wannabes and posers, I hate em. Not neccesarily for how they look but how they ruin these cars, especially the classics, by cutting them to bits. Not to mention an LS in a porsche ? Fuck off you have completely ruined the thing, it's not a porsche anymore. it pisses me off and I'm not even a porsche guy, I just don't like seeing nice cars being destroyed for dumb reasons.

I remember seeing the RWB 993 at the LeMay Car Museum while I was on a volunteer shift, that was wild seeing that build go on. That car reminded me of the Group 5 racers, but with the chassis of a 90's 911 underneath. I'm a Porsche fan and it surprised me in a good way, not all Porsche fans have a telephone pole stuck up their exhausts.

I love Nakai’s work, when i moved back home to Texas, i moved right outside of Dallas and i got to see him finish a gorgeous RWB at the new summit racing that was built in Arlington. Before then, i worked for a company called TRS, we developed custom headlights for those vehicles and 2 of his personal cars were in our showroom for a while. It was amazing

It’s 2022 and the world’s taste in cars are so different now. I use to say “worsened” but I’ve come into terms that the ship has sailed. We can’t buy Supras, RX-7s, R34s, or even 86s for a decent price now. Heck, EGs and Type-R’s are just plain too much now. The time of affordable builds are kinda gone-there’s exceptions but it’s sad 😞. Donut, these Up to Speed episodes are preserving car culture. You are doing all enthusiasts an amazing opportunity to share these videos to our children one day even if their taste is not the same as ours. This episode made me cry-I remember the Pandora One and it gave me a desire to own one of these things one day, launched my love for lime green 911s, and car culture in general. Thank you for keeping the spirit of car culture, Top Gear, and all those Saturday morning car shows alive. Love you guys
