Have you ever wondered why no one speedruns the James Bond video game adaptation of "The World is Not Enough", while Goldeneye is such a popular speedgame? The story isn't all that simple, and takes us on a winding odyssey of recorded speedruns, broken strategies and lost VHS tapes. Sit back, get comfy, and enjoy this fireside story!

beating every game is weird, but playing 1 game for 50,000 hours is normal

Goose, there's one thing that could "resurect" TWINE speedrunning: REAL-TIME ATTACK. Yes, forget the timer at the end of the mission. So, RTA is inconvenient in the sense that you have to keep a timer, start it at the right time, end it at the right time, etc. But it has its plus: it encourages not only good gameplay but also good menu-ing. So, if you use buffer strats in TWINE, you can do it, but the RTA timer is still ticking. Tick tock, tick tock... And, at the end, even if the level says you completed the level in 0:00, but your RTA timer says 4h57min32s677f, all that you proved is that you took 4 hours to play a 3 minutes level. But it is also, in a sense, less punishing. Like you mentionned at the end, you could only pause once to get a specific item and, if you failed to get it then, your run would be invalidated. Well, with RTA, that's not an issue. The clock keep ticking... RTA also disregard game lag. So yeah. Oh, and, it avoids "tied WR", well, not entirely avoids but reduces almost to null the possibility of one. My 2¢.
@HappyBeezerStudios

I'm not sure how I found your channel however ever since Discovery I highly enjoy and anticipate your content. I suppose much of it has to do with games I played in my childhood. Also I like your methodical approach to the craft. I can appreciate any ones ability to focus and become so unconsciously competent. I never did speed runs when I had Goldeneye but I know I was the 2nd kid in my entire neighborhood to beat the whole game on 007. (MN) But I borrowed my game and system to one of my friends down the street and his older sister's boyfriend beat me up and punked me for my 64. It really sucks because I couldn't tell my parents or else my dad would have kicked my ass too! so I never had another 64 until just recently I picked one up on Craigslist and I bought James Bond (also perfect dark, waverace and tetrisphear) and have been enjoying it ever since. Thanks for caring about this stuff so much man in today's world sincerity is really great! Keep it up 👍

My Question is. I thought there was discussion on what is and isnt allowed for a run. wouldnt you just make that invalid if someone tries to do the pause trick. and based on when i played. you dont need to do pause the game ever in TWINE. you can switch gadgets on the control itself. Thats what a SR community do. explain what is and isnt allowed in a run. what counts and doesnt to make it fair for all people who are competing in these time runs. a lot of the explanation doesnt make it seem like the game is impossible to run, just a sub story of a person and thats why no one does it. which is strange in the history of SR ive looked into from you and others over the years. So... people should still try to SR it.
@Seriona1
@Seriona1 3 жыл бұрын
Speedrun.com has only one rule in place which is not to use the pause trick otherwise each level can have a 0:0 but as you said, there is no requirement to pause so if you watch the world records, they don't.

It honestly kinda sucks that TWINE basically has zero speedrun community, I think TWINE is a damn fine game that ages almost as well as GoldenEye. Although keep in mind I played *all* of the EA Bond games before I picked up GoldenEye (yes that means the entire GameCube lineup) and other than Rogue Agent being meh, I love all of those games. GoldenEye certainly deserves all the praise it got and continues to get, but it's forever shafted the rest of the games like they don't even exist. TWINE has incredible attention to detail with to the movie (setpieces, music, the voice acting is surprisingly good), the all-purpose watch is a cool consistent gadget, lots of weapons have alternate fire modes and the multiplayer is damn good with having bots in it. Sure, it's got its issues and it's not as easy to pick up or as snappy as GoldenEye, but I just think it's a shame that TWINE barely gets any love. Even NightFire seems to only be just NOW gaining traction, and that's widely considered the best game after GoldenEye (me personally I kinda love it and Agent Under Fire equally). I can't fault GoldenEye itself for it, it just disappoints me that barely anyone cares about the EA era of Bond where I have the most memories with. Yeah, EA's known for being borderline evil nowadays, but even when their Bond games were also annual releases, at least they were all DIFFERENT from each other even if it's the same genres.

Oh crap. Flashback of BGM/Cold Reception as the clip started. 10/10 echoing in my head for the day.. I never got past like level 5(?) in this game as a kid, that ape Gabor caught me every time. Only once did i get to Davidov, and accidentally shot him. No 00-agent... Multiplayer was brilliant, and to my recollection it was the first videogame i played that could do multiplayer in splitscreen both horizontally as well as vertically, eg. see nothing as it was tiny vs. see nothing but better gun details, with field of view wide as a shoestring on a sub 28'' screen tube telly a'la Salora. I have seen a vid on KZfaq that made a in-depth analysis about this game. I have no idea when i have seen it, or by whom it was made, i do remember that the feller narrating had an off-typical accent on his english. Some aspects about this game made then as well as my own: 1. That the game is (as previously mentioned here) aging badly, but also why this is from a technical point of view. Curiously enough, i do agree on one point made in that vid, namely that the graphics have an uncanny resemblence to the PS1 edition of TWINE. 2. That the weapon sounds have hit jackpot on many a gun. I liked and still love the "MK5 Deutche" (if this was the name of the MP5 clone), it had an surpricingly satisfying firing sound, that suited the weapon type. Also the scoped magnum revolver (while not as kick-ass as the Magnum in Goldeneye 64) really gave a feel of recoil that i had not experienced before that. 3. Many if not most animations were made well. Weapon loading animations? Epic for me. Once again that scoped Magnum, i still remember the loading animation as well as the sound of empty shell casings falling out of the chambers down on the floor. The Raptor .44 had the first partial slide/fixed barrel i ever saw, a bit like the Desert Eagle. Cool for a 9-10 year old. 4. Secondary functions of many firearms. Now this is something still lost-concept today. When has anyone else had an urge to attach an silencer to your gun, only to conclude that it cannot be done without an workbench/gun merchant/mod workshop/backpack interface etc.? A simple button input and Bond pulls out a silencer and attaches it onto the P2K. The MK5 has firing mode options, Full-Auto/Burst. The Raptor has an optional red-dot laser sight (that explained a lot about the strange clump hanging under the barrel). Some sniper rifle had single/burst firing mode, and that made my cousin lose his bananas when i never told him how i had that function but he did not. 5. Gadgets. How cool it was to toy around with the Bond wristwatch. Usually ending up shooting away the darts long before critically needed at some later point of a level... 6. Voice acting. What is this?! Where is the text?! It was a leap to the next millennia for me to hear Bond talking in a video game. The quality of the acting is also good, especially as Bond is not voiced by Pierce Brosnan. The sound-double does a fine job. 7. The feel. Goldeneye, when does it take place? Early to mid 90s? 80s? Many a way it is hard to pinpoint, russian soldiers make it 90s, as well as the fact that the Soviet bloc must fallen to allow the storyline to happen. Overall it is still not bound to a specific moment in time. But TWINE feels just when it is. Turn of the millennia. The MI6 attack and masked terrorist like commandos, Bond not using his PPK anymore, to be lost for years before Vladimir Putins little brother gets it again for the first time.. The tech, graphics and such also date it to when it was made, that probably makes it look so horrible now compared to Goldeneye 64. Goldeneye looks timeless, it is a product of the time. It made FPS games cool in a new way. A way without demons, monsters, skeletons, zombies, aliens etc. It simply suits a casual individual that knows what a gun is, knows why people have guns in movies, and now they can shoot badguys!! Or hurl around spinning, shooting the snow, complaining nausea and vertigo like my friend who never had used an analog stick in her life.. But TWINE? It is not equally fantastic. The game engine is an evolved version, bringing fun quirks into the mix. But it is not as unique. The story mode is much more limited by the movie storyline itself, levels immerse themselves in some strange side-quests that defy logic. I wanted more tanks! More explotions!!! But i got to disarm a bomb in a public toilet while taking a short-cut chasing a random woman... I have never been a fan of stealth, not the kind of "ENEMY HAS SEEN YOU-YOU FAIL-GAME OVER-SAVEFILE AUTODELETE" stealth. And it quickly went from pacing up to halting. It is not a action packed game. It wanted narration that was not possible in proper sence back then. Today TWINE could be better, if they decided to wait until Putin jr. is traded for another actor.. I liked the game, but just like then as a kid, i played it for a while and then switched over to Goldeneye.

So, "The Legendary Tape" was just a dude pausing over and over for 2 hours just to get a number on a game nobody plays. Beyond depressing.
