I recently conducted a survey. The majority of respondents said Ubuntu followed by a Red Hat derivative such as Rocky. At the end of the day different jobs require different tools. For work obviously it is what the employer or customer chooses. Outside of work my go to is Debian for me, but I try other distros occasionally.

Kind of like how when I was a kid I had a favorite car. Now I'm more like: these 3 cars would work ok for commuting, these 5 would be ok for a cross-country trip.

Debian or Ubuntu based, unless you are one of these tinkerers with bleeding edge hardware then Arch or Fedora based distros are the better option. If you want the "real" hardcore, Linux from Scratch is the way to go.

SUSE may not be very popular in the USA, but it is widely used in Europe, especially government institutions. I work for one of these and we manage thousands of workstations using SUSE.

Absolutely people should pick one or use couple more at the same time. Starting off with Slackware helped me learn a lot about Linux and the computer itself, that may or may not help in the enterprise

The most used distros for servers are... 1) RHEL 2) Ubuntu So, professionally, i would learn them. For personal use, whatever you want. I think Pop is the best desktop imo. Especially with Cosmic coming soon. But its really just personal preference. The only people who get all bent outta shape about distros are usually noobs who just recently learned how to install Arch and think they actually know Linux now. lol

I'm too lazy to make a full switch on my gaming rig since i quickly found out my VR doesnt "just work" but I still like to play around with various linux distros in virtualbox and run mint on my old laptop just for media consumption and web browsing.

I concluded long ago that one's choice of their distribution is largely a matter of personal taste and preference. People will justify and argue endlessly. I choose not to enter into those arguments. I use what appeals to me. That has varied a lot over time. Distros that I swore I would never use for one reason or another later became my daily driver. Did the distro change? No. I changed. FYI...I am currently using two distros on separate computers with identical setups. Why? If one distro becomes problematic in a way that I cannot immediately resolve, I have a backup that is still functional. So, I am using Debian testing and Void both with DWM. They work well for me at the moment. Next week or next year, I may be doing something different. I do think that certain distros lend themselves more to the new Linux user as well as to a users intended use case(s). If asked, I'll recommend that they "try" certain distros without making any attempt to sell them on one distro or another. I'm a pretty strong Christian. I've seen the debates rage for years without resolution. They still go on. In my experience, few people change their minds based on some rational argument. The only time where such an argument may be effective is in the case where the person is exploring the alternatives. Even then, he/she will probably end up taking the position that best suites him/her. This is how I see it. You will have your take on the situation. I respect that. As long as you are content, I'm happy for you.

I love your channel, you make awesome content. I am not really going into sysadmin work anymore, as I am shifting towards telecom. Personally I really like endeavor/arch for my personal use, but I am still distro-hopping like crazy on my laptop. Servers are ubuntu, I do have the rhel free tier, so I could do that for my servers if I ever feel like it. You are very based, have a good day.

I agree with you. Distros don't really matter for most things. Debian, Rocky, Alpine, Arch, etc. It's all mostly the same. You'll see all of them in enterprise use. it's kinda wild right now with people starting to use arch like an enterprise distro. the power of memes. (and maybe documentation) Some are geared for a daily use, but really you can use any for daily driving, same if you need to run stuff in a server. There's always a lot of options. Some people like the defaults, others like tinkering. It's all BS tribalism memes online anyway. Get good with enterprise linux stuff used for servers if that's the job you want.

What kind of truck is best for you? Depends on what your doing. I have run Gentoo, Arch, Slackware, RedHat/Fedora and Debian/Ubuntu/Mint. Fedora/Ubntu/Mint are the easiest to get going with as a newcomer. Additional software is called packages. They are installed with a package manager. RedHat/Fedora use RPM packages and Debian/Ubuntu/Mint use APT. I prefer apt. At home if I want a desktop with an interface that is easy for a windows user to use, I go with Linux Mint Cinnamon Edition. If I was learning to get into a corporate job, I would go with RedHat or one of direct knock-offs like Alma Linux.

I don't have a 'my distro' distro. The first one I really played with was Zorin. The next I spent a significant amount of time with was Fedora 40 KDE. Tried Linuxmint... didn't care for it as much as the other two. Played with a Live image of Vanilla OS but didn't install it, though I'm keeping an eye on its next iteration, "Orchid." I haven't yet found "the one" that'll make me switch full-time. As for my use-case: same stuff I use Windows for; writing, f***ing around on the internet, and gaming.

If you don't play Fortnite, LoL, Paladins, or Valorant, you can switch to Linux pretty easily. Writing or ****ing around on the internet are not something exclusive to Windows.

My daily drives is Linux Mint Cinnamon as a base, and then I switch out Cinnamon for Fluxbox. Mint means all the goodness of Ubuntu with anything stupid that Canonical has done removed. Fluxbox means I have one folder with all my window theming, keyboard shortcuts, and autostart apps. Going on 20+ years of having the same setup with the same hotkeys. I can't even put into words what it is like to not have to change your workflow for 20 years because of desktop update.

I always run Linux Mint for my daily driver desktop. I am at home with everything Debian. With that said I am now a RHCSA and will be getting my RHCE in the next month. The Red Hat certs have value, and being able to administer both DEB and RPM based systems means I can do it all.

LMDE?

@BreetaiZentradi 13 күн бұрын
@@folksurvival I have a lot of Debian servers at work. At home I am happy with Mint being based on Ubuntu. I have used LMDE on and off but it typically trails behind Mint. What I like about LMDE is that it is an insurance policy. Ubuntu can not play hardball with Mint because within 2 hours of Ubuntu taking any detrimental action, Ubuntu will be dropped as a base and everything will be LMDE based.

what matters most for users though? Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, right? you don't need to follow enterprise, Arch is the best for advanced, deep optimisation for local use case, but Debian/Ubuntu is better for the average user

Enterprise Linux users are the only ones I focus on. Any distro is absolutely fine for everyone just interested in Linux. Depends on what you want to do, specifically. (Also appears you didn't watch the entire video since I said exactly this about Arch, for example, for security personalized distro builds.)

I have been messing around with Linux since RedHat 5 (I think... Circa 1995) I "play" with Linux seeing how viable it can be for the "Normies" I agree with you about .... what is your "Purpose" for the computer OS. My Daily Driver is still a Heavily Modified Windows 10 Pro 64 Linux is great for someone that barely uses a computer and doesn't want to spend boatloads of money (ala-MAC) For 'Those' people I recommend LinuxMint with the Mate desktop If you are a Gamer... windows is still your go-to platform (can you play games on Linux.... SOME games you can play... only SOME.) Are you concerned about security? Sorry NO-one is concerned about security enough to switch from their windows or Mac's I have about 20 Distro's in Virtual Machine so I can compare and contrast But I was only able to convince ONE person to switch to Linux and that was because they were flat broke and was able to breathe new life into a POS windows box with Linux.
