Stopping is important! Good bearings are important too... unless you like your wheels falling off!
This is my first time overhauling the brakes and bearings on this truck. She feels so much better now!

Hey dude - thanks for the video! Doing this job myself. This was really helpful. Please keep it up! Just a quick correction - I'm pretty sure the axle spacer order goes (from inside out): 1. Metal washer 2. Plastic Washer 3. Splined washer. Couldn't find anything online to verify that - but from what I've read on forums, the purpose of the spacers are to keep the axle poking out from the spindle enough so that the splines engage with the locking hub. Therefore the metal and plastic washers will hold the axle out enough, and the splined washer and the c-clip will work together to keep them in place. If anyone else knows otherwise let me know!

On my 95 Ranger, I tried to put all 3 washers back on after an auto to manual hub conversion, but there was not enough room for the c clip to slide on. This even after tugging on the splined shaft. I wound up leaving the thicker plastic washer off. I'm concerned about 2 metal washers spinning against each other, but I couldn't find any gospel anywhere on what the proper configuration is. I just greased them up and hope it lasts.

One important thing! When you replace worn-out pads with new ones you will have to compress the caliper piston back into the caliper bore to install the new pads which will be much thicker than the worn-out pads. Warning!!! Install the tires Before you take the vehicle off the jack stands, pump the brake pedal to move the caliper-retracted pistons towards the disk rotor so that the new pads are tightly against the rotors. Your brake pedal may have to be pumped several times until it becomes hard to push any further. If you don't do this step, when you take the vehicle off the jack stands, start the engine, and move the car you will NOT have any brakes! Please don't forget this important step for your and others' safety.

150 ft lb's??? I'm pretty sure the correct torque sequence is to spin the disc counterclockwise as you torque it to 21 ft lb's. Then back it off about 1/4 turn (or a little bit more) while spinning the disc clockwise. Then torque it down to 17 INCH POUNDS while spinning the disc counterclockwise. This torque sequence is so the bearings are first properly seated, and then the proper preload applied. Fords can be fussy this way.

There's definitely pros and cons to keeping the dust shield. Some people take them off for better brake cooling (especially if you generate high heat at slow speeds and airflow is an issue), easier maintenance, less rocks getting stuck between the shields and the calipers if you off road... I've never had any problems removing them. My 99 Ranger had custom fabricated offroad racing suspension and no dust shield. Ran that truck all through the desert for years with no problems. You can ask lots of other people who off road for fun or race who will tell you the same. If your truck is a daily and you deal with lots of snow, salt, etc... Probably better to keep them on. This truck is not a daily. It's a toy. Ghetto to run used bearings? Maybe. They were in really good shape and looked like they had a lot of life left. I've got a set of brand new ones on standby. The whole point of this truck for me is to tinker and experiment. For some people, junk yard part shopping is the only option they have. I got them cheap and was just curious to see how long those bearings would last. I've got 5 other vehicles that always get brand new, quality parts. This one is the jerry rig, macgyver, budget build special.

I've been watching this video over and over to make sure I'm getting this right the 1st time. 🥲 So I battled with the "rotor seal" that you mention tapping with a rubber mallet. I had assumed that everything would seamlessly fit, however I put my new inner bearing and racer into the rotor and then tried to seat and tap in the seal ever so gentle like but could not get it to seat properly...and it stayed raised about 1/16th of an inch.🥵 so then I go back and see that you specifically mentioned that your rotors had the bearing racer already "pre-pressed" when you purchased them from auto zone.🤔🤔🤔 (Just bought a brand new rotor from Autozone 3 days ago) I can't professionally tell one way or another my rotor doesn't have the fancy gear looking thing on the inside back part of the rotor like yours (either due to aftermarket product design... or the fact that in '94 Mazda b4000's had to differ slightly so they could sell it as ..."not a ford" 🤷‍♂️🤣 The new rotor has what appears to be a machined "outer racer" is this correct or am I gonna self destruct on the freeway again if I just assume? So I did exactly what you did and only inserted the inner bearing into the brand new rotor, and like magic it all of the sudden seated the seal properly with just the inner bearing >>( but no aftermarket bearing racer on the outside of the inner bearing.. if that makes sense..)
@rayregnogarage

I don’t think there’s much difference between the mazda and ranger. That would be too much engineering and that’s expensive. the only real difference is the aesthetics. My newer cars: xterra and impreza don’t have the bearings as part of the rotor. there is an entire hub assembly that you replace. the bearings aren’t serviceable. It’s simpler but more expensive. I imagine the newer rangers are the same.
