I am old enough at 76 and have lived in Wales long enough - since 1960 - both to have learned Welsh and to have had the wonderful experience of seeing Ryan on the stage in The Pavilion Porthcawl and in the New Theatre Cardiff. He was utterly and completely bilingual in Welsh and English. In Cardiff, however, he became trilingual as he had the ability to speak perfect 'Cairdiff' as well as in "Cwtsch in by me, love!"!

He was so special and normal , when staying with us at The Fishguard Bay Hotel, when filming Under Milk Wood . He used to call into my office and say it is so nice to sit here and be quiet… half an hour later the door would open and some would burst in and say there you are Ryan. Come and makes us laugh. And he would say see what I mean here I go again and off he would go. Laughing and joking… such a joy to have known him, but sadly no escape.

What a shame that such wonderful talent was taken so from us at such an early age. Two brilliant entertainers with Ryan being, for me, the ultimate all rounder.

PSA: 'Cerdd dant' does not mean "Tooth music", btw, that was just a pun. It means "String music". [Dant= tooth, tant= string, of an instrument, its initial consonant mutates due to gender rules, or whatever]

look how mesmerised the crowd are when they've heard the welsh version! Just goes to show that poetry doesn't really translate that well 😂
