What if instead of trying to be some unassailable force of moral good in the world, each of us just tried to be a little bit better whenever we saw an opportunity? What kind of cumulative difference would that end up making?
Everyone has opportunities to do this. Opportunities to put their phone down and really listen to someone who needs to be heard. Opportunities to contribute some spare change to a worthy cause. Opportunities to let their employees go home early from work. Opportunities to pass on an unnecessary cross country flight or to pick up some trash or to hold the door open for someone.
These are little actions. They won’t make you a sage or a saint. But they will make a little improvement to the world and to yourself. And if we all did them-and if we all did them more often-they would add up to real transformation.
In this video Ryan Holiday and Guy Raz sat down in San Francisco to talk about living up to the Stoic principles, how to structure your days, and how to get better a little bit every day.

Small changes make a huge difference. You've got to take things easy and do everything one step at a time.

Great discussion. So relevant to today’s world. Sometimes, some of the greatest influences come from smaller voices.

Stoicism has profoundly impacted my life though I would say I could have used it more when I was younger. I do have this nagging voice in the back of my mind that stoicism is for slaves. Yes, in the modern world, there are many things that are out of our control and learning to accept that can’t be a bad thing. However, we have so much more freedom now and with freedom comes responsibly. I struggle to balance that with stoicism so as not to avoid responsibility. There are some things in our personal lives that we do have control over that we shouldn’t shrug our shoulders to.

I would counter that stoicism is for great men, emperors, slaves turned respected philosophers, men of character and strength. Times change but we largely stay the same. I believe Stoicism is still a valid school of philosophy in today's society. Also, in my opinion Stoicism tells you largely to focus your emotion on yourself and what you can control, and always strive to be better and to treat others better. Whereas with the things you cannot control, they are meant to happen and to view them not as bad or good but as an event. Because ultimately you have no control over that event, if anything the universe had control over that event, those random assortments of atoms that made, whatever event happen.

It can be difficult- just like with the 48 laws- to know when to do what. But I think if your overall goal is to pursue some semblance of peace of mind - you're on the right track. Your body and mind will want to balance out regardless- so if you're spending too much time in isolation or too much time in the rat race - you'll know

Many moons ago in the 4th of grade, we had an unplanned class speaker pop in during a lesson an older gentlemen in his 70's. I don't remember his name or his exact application, but I do remember his demeanor and his end all message. Our teacher was pretty high strung so when he entered the class unexpected she tried to assert her authority but I will never forget how the guy never changed pace or even acknowledged her on his way to the front of the room but he was only in the room for maybe 5 minutes. Got to the front and started with "10 word sentence, each word is two letters and its all about you" ....."If is to be it is up to me".

I got this Serenity Prayer from this video that says: "Oh God, grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change, the courage to the ones I can and the wisdom to know that one is me." I don't know if that helps but this is the first thing that came to mind upon reading your comment.
