X Games gold medalist and former MTV reality star Ryan Sheckler discusses the role his mom plays in his life, including the moment he called to tell her he needed help battling alcoholism. Sheckler says the day he went to rehab was the scariest day of his life, because he had to fully surrender to the program. The skateboarding star candidly shares details of a 2020 relapse that started around his 30th birthday and lasted five months, plus how a newfound focus in his Christianity created positive change in his life and an inspiring call from Michael Phelps that helped fuel Sheckler’s sobriety.

The amount of skaters who self-medicate with beer and weed is massive. That's the culture that I was drawn to. It was manly, it was rebellious, and it was exciting. But oh so dangerous bc you don't know you're in too deep until it's too late

Glad to see he's sober. Im a recovering alcoholic and heroin addict. Ive been sober going on 2790+ days and I can totally relate to him because it was my mother who was the only person who stayed by my side and brought me to rehab. Awesome to see skaters getting sober and being better role models to the younger skate generation... because it was the piss drunks I grew up idolizing and made me think partying and skating go hand in hand. Those guys are all sober now too. One day at'a time.

The next day you have your dope and it's early enough in the day to call or go down there, go get on methadone or Suboxone! Your appointment probably won't be for like a week so you'll still have to do your thing in the meantime but make sure you make your appointment go get your first dose do what they say and just don't use if you're serious not getting clean once you feel good from the Suboxone or methadone you're not going to want to use but if you're not serious you're still going to have that itch in the back of your brain 15 years is a long time that's about how long it took me you can do it bro it's hard but you can definitely do it!

Stay strong buddy. I was a dope fiend for 9 years. Couldn’t go six hours without using. In July I’ll have 7 years sober. Just keep on putting in the work and don’t give up. Go to meetings, talk to people, and most importantly of all, don’t come up with reasons for yourself about why all those things might work for others but not for you. I thought meetings and sponsors and all were the lamest thing in the world, and I hated all the cliches. But at a certain point it starts to click

Definitely. And I think there’s a definite connection between all these really successful people and addiction. They are obsessive over their sport, their music, their career and that same personality that is soo focused, these people are all in or not at all. They don’t do anything half way. Often there’s no balance.

Hey Mike, no one is good: „as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”“ ‭‭Romans‬ ‭3:10-12‬ ‭ESV‬‬ Thats why we need Jesus, his perfection and sacrifice is the only reason why we can cine to the father: „“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”“ ‭‭John‬ ‭3:16-21‬ ‭ESV‬‬ www.bible.com God bless you Mike.

I'm also 31 years old. I got to the point that I was drinking 30,40 and sometimes more than 50 days in a row. 2017-2020 I stayed drunk an excess of 300 days every year or more. As someone in recovery I can’t tell you how comforting it is to see more and more people be open, honest and outspoken about their struggles with addiction. The public’s historical stigma of having an addiction and how it slots you as a person is the primary reason I believe most people won’t get help. That was the biggest barrier for me and it wasn’t until I met people struggling like me that I was finally able realize that I wasn’t alone in this fight and I should’ve be ashamed of it. Thanks for showing this type of content.

Amen. Lots of fake Christians, and I was one of them in the Baptist church all my life until God started speaking to me on June 28, 2004. I have been on YT for over four years because the Lord told me to warn people that the rapture is happening. Don't want anyone to be left behind, but most are not born again. Praying someone will surrender to Jesus Christ completely today. It's not religion but a personal relationship.

He seems like a very down to earth dude, which is humbling to see. It takes a very special kind of person to be in the spotlight for their entire short life to not develop a huge ego. I’m glad he’s taking the right steps in life to feel better. Addiction is brutal I’ve been there and it takes a lot of courage to turn it around, god bless 🙏🏼

Great interview. Glad to see he is on the path to redemption. Everyone I know who has become extremely successful has gone through the tribulations of success. Money , sex and materialistic possessions, but they never got enough. There was still a hole in them, and they didn't know what it was.

@Bleeding Edge Well, it's not that hard to understand the reason why. Those people mostly chose earning money and fame over living a sustainable and happy life. It's the prize they pay for always wanna be better, faster, richer, more beautiful than everybody else.

It’s because no matter how successful more often then not these people are spiritually dead inside. Not that being a monk in a desolate land somewhere will make you whole but the western model clearly does not work. I know people who pray and commit themselves to enlightenment and they aren’t complete either. It is the human condition and suffering and sadness is apart of it since happiness and euphoria is also there.

I think the reason he drank again after initially getting sober is because it didn't feel normal to be sober. Count how long it's been partying and how long it was before partying and this concept makes sense. It really takes a strong human being to admit you have a problem, and not only that, but to embrace sobriety and tell others your story. I've been fascinated with Ryan's skating but honestly I now respect him on another whole level. Thank you Ryan and Graham for sharing a very intriguing success story. - Paul

@@ShogunateDaimyo True that! I have no regrets being sober and feel so much better and clear minded. Some people get uneasy when I don't say yes to drugs or drinking, and I think this is because they can't imagine having a good time without using. People places and things really help too. I imagine Ryan knows that one. It's difficult at first, but you then realize who really are your friends and who aren't.

As a product of the skateboarding/punk rock culture of the 90s, I can attest to how easy it is to slip into the party lifestyle. We are just a bunch of tatted up Peter Pans with a penchant for partying hard and livin day to day. I found my way out of a similar hole. Ish ain’t easy, but we all gotta grow up eventually. I found my connection with God and haven’t looked back since.

Been sober since 9-2002 53 years old now and I’ll never “grow up” but I did become a man and I matured a little. My mother is 83 I’m still her kid and I refuse to grow up. Quote for sons: “A man doesn’t become a man until the day his father dies”. My father died 5-31-2002. The Lord took drugs and alcohol from me before 9-7-2002

this is awesome brother I come back to this video time to time to hear your story. I have been battling alcohol abuse problems. I’m very functional but I sometimes get blitzed 3-4 days a week. My family has said I should seek help but I am able to stay dry while working which I have always prided myself at not being drunk at work. I do however drink to escape at first i thought it was for fun but it’s self medicating because my brain stressed over everything. When i’m drunk I have a rest for reality, but in turn makes me a person I don’t wanna be as well.

That's the truth! We stay with our Bibles open and read it daily to keep us on the straight and narrow and in love with Jesus with all our heart, mind, soul and strength and to love our neighbor as ourself. Jesus really is coming to rapture us any day. We have to sound the alarm that the time to repent and trust in Jesus is now. Maranatha.
