A whole bunch of people I went to uni with said this was their favourite movie as a kid, and they were all surprised I'd never seen it. I didn't wind up watching it myself until I was like 25 or something but I spent the entire movie thinking "yes, I understand, this would have altered my whole personality if I saw it as a child."

Did you recognize the actor that played the man with six fingers? Epic comedic actor, Christopher Guest who was in Spinal Tap and Best in Show. The man is an absolute chameleon.

@@RyanCarrington Princess Bride and This is Spinal Tap were directed by Rob Reiner (he plays Marty DeBergi in Spinal Tap). I cannot recommend highly enough the movie he directed right after Spinal Tap: The Sure Thing. It stars a very young John Cusack. It's a comedy, road trip movie, a Christmas movie and is SO GREAT! One of my all-time favorites. Just... see it, your life will be better for it. :)

A rare perfect movie. The story and characters are exactly as they should be. The pacing and length are spot on. Humor, action, romance, comraderie, and villainy, all well done.

Carey Elwes did get a concussion in this film, when Christopher Guest (Count Rugen) hit him in the head with his sword. He's really being knocked unconscious in that shot and had to be rushed to the hospital. I saw this movie after it first came out. I was seventeen and it still became my second favorite film ever. When Mandy Patinkin says, "I want my father back, you son of a bitch!" I fight tears every single time.

Fun (kinda) fact: The actor who played Inigo lost his father to cancer during filming. During the final fight with the Count, he imagined he was fighting cancer itself. His intensity was real (as was the fear in the Count's eyes... the actor has stated he was genuinely afraid of being hurt because of Patinkin's intensity)... and his final line of "I want my father back" has so much extra weight because of that.

The excellence of the main pair in the movie is, in a funny way, a tribute to step-parents. Robin Wright, though a California girl, had a British stepfather and so was able to do a flawless English accent. And Cary Elwes, though British, had an American stepfather and spent part of his youth in the US, and grew up liking and understanding American humor, so he could give the right undertones to his lines and action.

The actor who plays Fazzik is Andre The Giant. He used to be a professional wrestler and R.I.P. to him. Fun fact Fred Savage that plays the little boy in bed was a big fan of Andre The Giant. They had no filming scenes together. Andre showed up on set to visit Fred. They became good friends after meeting each other

I only saw this for the first time 4 or 5 years ago, couldn't tell you how many times I've seen it since, I absolutely adore it. And Cary Elwes physical comedy after coming back from being "mostly dead" is so good here, it's almost Jim Carrey like (ironic given the Liar Liar clip you stuck in haha).

I kind of wish that they’d remake The Neverending Story and actually complete the story - I’d like to see Ygrammul and the multi coloured death and a transformed Bastian as well as a talking Artax and a green skinned/blue haired Atreyu. It would be very long but so worth it imo

The best thing about The Princess Bride is that it's not primarily for kids. The Python-esque humor is perfect for this "fractured fairy tale".

First watched this when I was about 13 years old. Loved it, still love it. It's my #1 movie (followed by Labyrinth and Ladyhawke). Went through 3 VHS tapes and when the 3rd one was worn, I got the DVD.

I was 8 years old when this came out. A story of a grandson and grandfather bonding over a young adult adventure story. The best part is how much fun the grandson will have enjoying those fun characters the next day with his grand dad. Amazing team of actors, beautifully shot scenes, fun action, great humor and heart, awesome sword fight. Impossible to overrate this movie.

There is a shortage of perfect movies in Hollywood, but this is one of them. It is a classic story, a movie that knows exactly what it is. It doesn't take itself seriously, it is perfectly cast and the actors deliver their roles professionally. It seems that the writers, directors, producers, and actors were all on the same page and made it look like a well oiled machine. I don't think it is the "Greatest" movie of all time, but it is perfection IMHO.

This is my absolute favorite movie ever since I saw it in the theater. I have been suggesting it to everyone since then, and people would always think I am crazy because of the movie name. But it is just fun in every way, and good for the whole family (with exception of when Count Rugen gets killed... a bit bloody for little kids). Great, great movie.

The intro is oddly relatable. My sister asked for The Princess Diaries on dvd for Christmas back around 2002 but my dad accidentally bought The Princess Bride. That’s how I first saw this movie when I was 10/11 and absolutely loved it. Been one of my favorites ever since!

As a kid in the '90's, this was one of THE movies. I didn't even rent it all that often, but I didn't have to - it was everywhere. You go over to someone's house, they'd have this movie on. Parents get invited to a party; all the kids get shoved into a room with a film to keep them quiet; guess which movie would be on? Yep, this one. But no one ever got tired of it - I never once heard anyone gripe about watching 'Princess Bride' AGAIN, even though we'd all seen it a million times. I remember once, they showed it to us in school (well, one particular time; I probably saw it at least three times in school), and we were supposed to take notes on it to break down the story or something, but I got so into it that I forgot, and the teacher got mad at me. It's one of those very rare movies that the bloom never fades from, even if you can quote literally every line.

This movie is for everyone boys and girls it is such a great movie. This movie is based on a book. The writer of the book also wrote the script of the movie . The scene with Westley and the six finger man when the six finger man hit him in the head was real and the actor who plays Wesley had to go to the hospital. here was real spark between the main actors in real life Westley and Buttercup that's why it works. Andre the giant used his big hands to protect Robin Wright (Buttercup ) head when she was cold on the set. You should also see Wilow, Lady Hawk, The Never Ending Story and The Labyrinth 1986. This is one of the movies with an epic soundtrack like Conan The Barbarian or Highlander which you should also see. one of my favorite quotes from this movie "“We are men of action, lies do not become us.”"

Not just Billy Crystal, but Carol Kane playing his sassy wife. She played Simka, the sassy wife of Latka (Andy Kaufman), on the Taxi series, where Christopher Lloyd (Doc Brown in Back To The Future) also got his comedy acting start.

When I first saw this, I was a bit put off by the fantastical elements, but then I realized what we see is a visualization of how a grandfather would describe a fantasy story to his grandchildren. It totally changed my perspective of the 'bad' effects and over-dramatic actions.

"Why do they hang around that guy?", is exactly the reason why the book goes into more detail on Inigo's and Fezzik's bio. Boils down to what he screams at them, though: He picked them up at their lowest points and gave their lives reason.

I spent 10 days in Dublin and had s threesome with two oppositely-shaped blondes. Had drinks with Larry and wife from U2. Had a tiny little red headed red bearded drunken Irish leprechaun fella freak out over my black american friend for being black. Did 6 sellout concerts. My favourite part was the meats and cheeses. So nice to have non-processed un-american food.

@bitemark it literally had messages in it at the beginning of some chapters with summaries of what the political info was, and that it had been removed. "This chapter goes on about X country doing X thing" etc.

@@o0PonderousPanda0o Yeah I'm pretty sure that was the actual book :) the book is written much like this movie was made, it's a dad reading the book to his sick son, and keeps referencing the "original" book (there is no original), about how it would go on and on for pages just about fashion and pagentry, and political climate, etc

They establish in the first bit that when Westley was saying "As you wish" what he really meant was "I love you." So when at the end Peter Falk says "As You Wish" to Fred Savage, what he really means is "I love you."

The duel between Wesley and Inigo is so perfect. It isn't a fight, its a conversation with swords. I've seen it criticized as too showy, but thats the point. Inigo wouldn’t have been satisfied just with winning, he would want his opponent to KNOW that they did their best and lost to a superior foe.

The line “I want my father back you son of a bitch” hits hard, cause the actor had just lost his dad to cancer, and imagined he was fighting a personification of cancer. I’ve lost all those I love to cancer too, so when I heard about that, it broke me. One of the hardest deaths was my gramps, so I love the gramps at the end saying “as you wish”. Always cry at that now, like a giant wuss.

I grew up with this movie and it's a favorite to this day! It's a unique mix of romantic fairytale and adventure, told in a fantastic way. Each detail has so much thought and love put into it, you can really feel it. It's just such a feel-good film! Leaves you smiling 🥰 ~Caroline

A few things I like about the movie. You mentioned at the Cliffs of Insanity, it looked like painted setwork and miniatures. The whole movie has almost a play-like feel instead of a movie. Inigo and Westley's sword fight at the beginning. The honor they show. Inigo hands Westley the sword he was going to kill him with. Great show of faith and honor. It is implied that the Dread Pirate Roberts (Westley) leaves no prisoners. We have to assume he has killed dozens of people by this time, but doesn't kill anyone. Well, maybe technically Vizzini, but he killed himself by intentionally drinking from a potentially poisoned cup. Grandpas "As you wish" at the end of the movie. So sweet. This movie is so corny, but hilarious, and always worth a watch!

Enjoyed your reaction, and since you asked: the book was published in '73, when I was 8. I found it and read it the summer of '80 (15). Still one of the funniest books I've ever read. When the movie came out, I was 22 & a young single working mother, so I didn't see it 'til it came out on video (& didn't think the movie could do the book justice, frankly). My son & I watched it when he was probably about 8 or so & it's still one of our favorites (he's 38 now). So here I am, 58, watching you enjoying a story that's s been around for most of my life. And I just became a grandmother, I hope I'm around long enough to watch it with my granddaughter! Subscribed.

This is one of those movies I could watch every day or two and never get tired of it, it's just delightufl, I love it so much. Infinitely quotable, lighthearted but also with respectable stakes. Wonderful characters. Ah, I love it so much :D

When I was really little, the ROUS traumatized me and I could never remember what the giant rat puppet was from that haunted my dreams. Then one day when I was a teen, my father made me watch it and I humored him... I, too, confused it with the princess diaries.

The main character was played by Cary Elwes who is English (Robin Hood Men In Tights, Twister - where he was the leader of the rival storm chasers). The torturer was Mel Smith, film director and actor/comedian (Alas Smith and Jones, Wilt, Not the 9 o'clock News, etc.). Yes, that was billy Crystal. The Giant was played by a French born professional WWE wrestler who went by the name Andre The Giant.

The Dread Pirate Roberts is named after an actual pirate, Bartholomew Roberts, who captured about 400 ships and boats before dying in battle with the British Navy.

This movie is a treat. Rob Reiner directed this. Other movies he directed are well worth watching, among them: This is Spinal Tap (1984), Stand By Me (1986), When Harry Met Sally (1989), Misery (1990), A Few Good Men (1992).

The actor playing Inigo Montoya lost his father to cancer. He later said that when he said the line: "I want my father back, you son of a b*tch." He said like he was saying it to cancer, for taking his father.

The 'cheese race' you mention is called 'cheese rolling' and is done down one particular hill in Gloucestershire annually. The albino is played by British comedian Mel Smith. Divining or dowsing is the 'paranormal thing' for finding things, usually water.

He was playing on a Commodore 64, an early computing system. In the opening scene, you'll notice a short, wide, tan box to the right of the television. That is the disk drive for the computer.

Don't worry about quicksand. The way it is usually pictured was invented for the movies (where its usually just water with bits floating on it). There IS such a thing as quicksand, but you can't sink completely in it, only about up to your thighs. The problem with it is its usually in tidal bays and estuaries and it can be difficult to get out of. You can get stuck in it and then drown when the tide comes in. They say you should ideally lie down on the surface and crawl out.

Andre as the gentle giant was perfectly cast, he was and is always my favorite character. There are so many hilarious lines, such a quotable movie; Inigo Montoya ⚔️ has many that my family quote. 👸👰‍♀️💕

"Never get involved in a land war in Asia" has been attributed to various military leaders, including Bernard Montgomery, Dwight Eisenhower and Douglas MacArthur since World War II. It became popularized as an American sentiment after the Vietnam War. You were talking about a "divining rod" to find water. That was a fun reaction!

I was a teen. I walked down the aisle to the theme song for my wedding. I was prime age for all these movies - I recommend Ladyhawke for a followup (Matthew Broderick, Michele Pfeiffer, Rutger Hauer)
