George Lucas loved the idea so much, he gave Mel Brooks access to ILM (the visual effects company he created for Star Wars), that’s why the movie looks so good for a spoof movie. The condition was that they don’t sell spaceballs toys, that’s why the merchandising joke. Also, Lone Star couldn’t look like Han Solo. If you pay attention, he’s dressed like Indiana Jones. That’s Mel Brooks being very Mel Brooks.

This was great! Everyone misses the Prince Valium joke so give yourself some credit for getting it eventually. I've seen several reactions to this movie and I think you're the only person I've seen that actually got the joke. Young Frankenstein might be Mel Brooks' best film, so I think you'll enjoy that one. Robin Hood: Men in Tights is another parody film by Brooks that you might want to watch as well. It's specifically a parody of the 1993 Kevin Costner film Robin Hood but you don't really need to have seen that to enjoy Men in Tights. You might also want to check out High Anxiety which is a parody of Alfred Hitchcock films, specifically North by Northwest which is also definitely worth watching. High Anxiety brings back Harvey Korman, Cloris Leachman, and Madeline Kahn who were all in Blazing Saddles. Can't wait to see the next reaction!

The merchandising bit is a nod to the fact that Mel Brooks called up George Lucas to give George a heads up that he was thinking about making a film that heavily parodies Star Wars. Lucas didn’t have a problem with it because he loves Brooks’ work, but he insisted that they don’t try and make any merch for it because it would dilute Star Wars merch. So this was fake merch as a tip of the hat to that agreement.

Mel Brooks asked George Lucas if he was allowed to make a spoof about Star Wars Reading the script, Lucas agreed, and even offered Mel Brooks the use of the visual effects studio that was used to make Star Wars, it's why a lot of the VFX are actually really good for a spoof movie. The only deal was: No merchandise, and he couldn't directly use any characters from Star Wars. So Mel Brooks worked the merchandise into the story itself and made the main character look like Indiana Jones instead George loved the movie when he saw it

@@RyanCarrington Oh, don't get me started on David Lynch. One of my top-3 directors of all time. Basically you can't go wrong with any of his movies, though I have to say, his original version of "Dune" was kinda half hit, half miss, and "Inland Empire" is "to artsy to be pleasant" even for my taste. If you want to dig deeper into David Lynch, I would start with "Blue Velvet", than "Mulholland Drive" (my absolute favorite), "Wild At Heart" and "Lost Highway". Those are somehow the "classic David Lynch"-style movies. "Elephant Man" is kinda different, but a real good drama movie. "Straight Story" ist just heart-warming beautiful and shows, that Lynch can do just "straight-forward" storytelling without weird twists and turns too. And then you might be ready for "Eraserhead" - one of the films I watched, was fascinated, think it's brilliant, but never watched it again, cause it's one of the most disturbing movies I ever watched (and I watch quite a few weird movies). Oh, and you can throw in "Twin Peaks" - the TV series - any time.

Not sure if some else said it but here it goes the merch joke is because g Lucas made most of his money from star wars off of merchandise and not actually getting a normal salary which i believe he gave up due to the movie going over budget and gave the green light to this movie based on an agreement with m brookes not to make any space balls merchandise

I'm surprise hardly anyone watches the commentary… it's on the DVD, but was part of laserdisc version they put out! Mel Brooks even mentioned the laserdisc in the commentary! As well as that he(Mel Brooks) wanted the whole movie being just the ship going across the screen! 😂😂

The wouldn't let Lone Star dress like Han Solo, so Brooks dressed him as Indiana Jones.

You should check out Mel Brooks' "Life Stinks". It is one of my favorites. It has heart and it's funny. I don't know why more people don't do a reaction to that to movie, cause it's really good.

@@jamesedwards2483 ...I know, right? I think there is only like one reaction on youtube to that movie, yet I think it is one of Mel Brooks' best...weird.

I'm only about 4 minutes into your reaction, and I'm wondering if you grew up in the mid-80's to mid-90's like I did! (I was born in 1981) You recognised Rick Moranis, and Joan Rivers. And later, John Candy and Bill Pullman would star. Also, Mel Brooks is a comedy LEGEND! I can list SO MANY movies that you could react to, although most have already been reacted to by other youtubers.

@@RyanCarrington Again, most of the ones I've seen have already been reacted to. But if you want something different, try "Dogma" (dark comedy, loosely connected to Jay & Silent Bob) or "Rat Race" (comedy) or "Valkyrie" as a war movie. None of these have been covered/reacted to very much.

No they didn't. They actually had to get George Lucas's permission to make this movie and a key factor was they were not allowed to sell any merchandise at all.
