Ryobi Cleaning Power - The Ryobi 3100-PSI Pressure Washer is a great homeowner grade pressure washer that can tackle most cleaning situations. Powered by a Honda GCV190 gasoline engine, you get 3100-PSI of force to clean cars, ATVs, driveways, decks, windows, and other areas around the house. We have talked about PSI and GPM in other videos, but in general, PSI gives you cleaning power and GPM gives you cleaning speed. The vertical shaft motor and pump allow the upright frame to be moved around without bending over. Integrated into the wand, a power control gauge rotates to allow the user to quickly adjust pressure at the wand tip. This model comes with a 5 in 1 wand attachment so there is no tip changes. The Ryobi 3100-PSI Gas Pressure Washer has a 3-year limited warranty.
Ryobi RY80940B Features
Powerful Honda GCV190 (187cc) OHC engine
Idle down technology for fuel savings, reduced noise and longer engine life
5-in-1 nozzle for easy spray-pattern changes
25 ft. power flex hose bends like rope for easy management
Maintenance free aluminum pump
On-board detergent tank for hassle-free cleaning
Roll cage frame design keeps engine protected in rough conditions
3-year limited warranty
30 day guarantee
PSI & GPM
If you are looking for a pressure washer, it is good to keep in mind that the PSI of the unit is what does the actual cleaning. Approximately 3,000 PSI is about the cutoff from homeowner grade to low end commercial. But GPM also have a lot do to with the equation. The more GPM there is, the faster your surface will be cleaned. If you were to spill some soap on a driveway, would a cup of water or a five gallon bucket of water wash it away faster? This unit has a lower GPM, and that is what keeps it powered at homeowner grade.
Starting and Use
Ryobi has made this unit very simple to start and use. Even if you don’t read the manual before you put the pressure washer into service there are several guides on the unit itself that tell you what you need to know.
To start the unit from a cold start, you will need to pull out the choke, turn the gas supply on and then pull the starting cord. The unit should start within the first two pulls. These directions are of course laid out extremely well right on unit right where you will need it.
Rather than 4 or five nozzle tips, Ryobi uses a 5 in 1 attachment on this unit so you can quickly adjust between the different tips. This 5 in 1 has two soap options. One for a fan spray and one for a jet spray. The jet spray allows you to get soap up to the second story of your home without issue. That was a big bonus for this unit.
When using this unit, make sure you have water flowing to the pump before you start the engine. If you don’t have that water flow, you can wreck the pump. Since the vertical shaft pump that is supplied with this unit is basically unserviceable, you would need to replace the pump entirely to repair the damage.
The nice thing about this type of pump for homeowners is there is no required maintenance. As long as you are mindful of keeping water flow to the pump, it should last you quite a few years.
Final Thoughts
We have had a unit similar to this Ryobi pressure washer in the past and they have worked great. The Honda GCV190 engine starts and runs well and continues to run well for years. The 3100 PSI and 2.5 GPM are more than adequate for nearly all homeowners needs.

I just bought one of these at Home Depot, and I can't get enough of this unit. I like the changeable tip; I don't have to keep tips in my pocket or lose them. Maintenance is important, and making sure that no debris enters the fittings as one is screwing the hoses on.

HELP! Have a question for you...we just bought one of these and watched your video on the setup. First of all, thank you for that! Second of all, it was hard to start. It cut out after a couple of minutes - smoking like crazy & backfired. Gave it a rest, came back and started it up again after SEVERAL attempts. This time it worked fine til we turned it off after 10 mins...but the backfired again - with a visible large spark coming out of the side. Now I'm not at all mechanically inclined, but I think that means carburetor issues - or spark plugs. This is BRAND NEW, so this shouldn't be the case, should it? We meticulously poured in the oil, and carefully put it the gasoline (with no ethanol), not spilling a drop. What could the problem be, and how do we fix it? Thanks for your help!

I purchased this identical unit at Home Depot yesterday for $150 as it was a "reconditioned" unit. It pretty much looked brand new and I bought it because renting one for a 1/2 day was $70. The thing worked flawlessly in cleaning both concrete and cedar decking. As the host noted--never use ethanol fuel. "Clear" or non ethanol is best or even better, in my opinion, is VP 110 race fuel. Remember, once that trigger is pulled the thing is at full throttle. Also, I'd change the oil at 2-3 hours because of that---an oil change is cheap, a blown motor is not.

@WorkshopAddict
@WorkshopAddict 5 жыл бұрын
This is a 4 stroke, so no oil mixing with the gas. The air filter can last the life of the machine if it is not soaked in water or used in very dusty areas. While cleaning something, most likely the air will be clean. Your lawn mower, on the other hand, should be changed yearly because of all the pollen and other items that will plug it up and cause the engine to run on less air.

I have the RY80940A model with a ruined pump. Is there any reason that you know of that the RY80940B model pump wouldn’t work? The idle down assembly (pressure sensor) and pump design are different between the two pumps. Since the “A” model pressure washer is no longer on the market far as I know, I’m guessing the “B” model pump is an improvement. Ryobi will not confirm this and recommend the older model pump. Both the A and B model pumps are expensive compared to non idle down model pumps for sure..
@WorkshopAddict
@WorkshopAddict 3 жыл бұрын
I see no reason both pumps will not fit. There might be small differences in mounting brackets, but that is a simple fix IF it would be needed.

@@WorkshopAddict Thanks for your reply. I appreciate it. It bothers me that these consumer pumps are not rebuildable or that Ryobi does not offer trade in on pump housings. Or at least supply the high pressure manifold portion of the pump at a lower cost because the bottom end of my pump is perfectly re-useable. It’s crazy that these blown pumps become boat anchors, paper weights or trash for the landfill. There’s diminished return on cost effectiveness when you consider $140 replacement cost on these idle down pumps (90 day warranty). Sorry for the rant but folks should know the true cost of maintaining that idle down feature after their warranty expires.

I have this pressure washer. I wouldn't buy another. My fittings at the gun and pump leak. It's impossible to use this without my pants getting soaked from the fitting on the gun leaking. It's super awkward to move around, the way the handle is designed. The idle down is so screwed up on mine. I think it's due to the leaks but not sure. It will idle down when I let off the trigger but then it will jump right back up to full throttle and stay there. The soap tank is a huge pain to drain. Don't use it. It also leaves a lot to be desired as far as cleaning power.
@WorkshopAddict
@WorkshopAddict 7 жыл бұрын
The fittings use a rubber O-ring and one has to be careful with those and keep them lubricated. You are right, cleaning power is just not there, but this is a residential grade pressure washer. The GPM should have told you it would not be spectacular. Sounds like your idle down is lacking adjustment on the pump side. Probably a stuck valve. Try using some pump saver when it is not in use to help keep the pump clean.

I've had this for a week. I took the time to set-up several lengths of hose with quick-connect fittings as well as attaching a fitting to the Ryobi 3100; I can reconfigure the hose lengths to take this pressure washer anywhere in the yard and all the way down to the end of our driveway. I'm just about out of things to wash and I'm saving my '96 Chevrolet Tahoe for last. The Idle-Down feature is very intuitive. I can let go of the wand's trigger to have a conversation with someone which is a very thoughtful feature. Yesterday we changed the cutting deck on our lawn tractor and my stepson wanted to use the Ryobi 3100 to clean-up the old deck. I told him to forget it because the caked-on grass was too tough to get off; oh, ye of little faith. The 3100 cut through that old grass like the proverbial hot knife through butter. I sincerely hope that with the proper care and maintenance we'll see a number of good years of use out of this pressure washer.

Home Depot had one marked down as an "open box" item. Thinking it was new, I brought it home in fall. When I tried to fire it up the next spring, no go. Turned out that the thing had been USED. Don't know how that escaped my notice, but it did. So I am here to say that if you don't store this thing properly in winter, it WILL NOT start in spring. Also, make a mental note to never fuel it with ethanol-containing gasoline. IT is a mess. I am getting ready to put this thing on Craigslist for parts. I'm thinking someone "bought" it, took it home and used it, and "returned" it, and HD mislabeled it as an opened item that had not been used.

James Carroll Sorry for your troubles. Two things that might help. First, these small engines are very easy to work on. If you check if you have spark, the only other thing that could go wrong is that the carb was gummed up from it sitting. They are very easy to take apart! There do not remove any screws that have springs showing, otherwise there are no adjustments. Clean up any brass fittings and make sure the idle jet is clear. Put some seafoam in the tank and it should run. It should take less than 30 minutes to clean the carb and it will get you more money when you sell it. Just sitting for a year could be why it won't start. You can pour some fuel through the carb and see if it will fire before you do more work. Good luck bud.
