I quite like the idea that the person who wrote the story of the game had played a game of Total War: Rome 2, played as the Britannic Tribes, did quite well and decided to write another game set in the alternate timeline which happened in their game.

The idea that the emperors personal guard would be hostile to a roman soldier isnt too outlandish, I mean it was forbidden for the roman army to set foot in rome itself, so a fully armored roman legionaire with his sword drawn would be a big cause for worry

Jon, the problem with your boss fights is that you NEVER blocked the attacks! I assure you they are way more fun and dynamic when you actually block, because it allows you to strike a counter-attack. And btw, you can block heavy attacks (when the ennemy glows red) but it requires a much more precise timing (I say that because it took me a while to realise). Anyway, glad you played it to the end, it was fun!

Usually my problem with medieval stuff too. Like popular media always has medieval era productions with everyone dressed drab, in mud and brown and grey. Covered in dirt, etc, etc, etc. When what we know seems to suggest they were actually a very bright, colorful, even gaudy time for fashion. Among both nobility and peasants.

Actually since my class studied Roman History and its fall I can concur on Jon's statement that Rome didn't fall because of Barbarians, It was one of the reasons and problems but not the main thing. Like Jon said economical problems is probably an acceptable reason why West Rome fell, Unlike the East Roman Empire the West didn't have great trade centers and economical in general cities like Antioch,Constatinople and Alexandria. The Slave thing is also very true, when the Romans stopped conquering lands they can't get slaves nor (Jon didn't say) tribute from Barbarian tribes. But eitherway I loved all the little complains and such about the historical accuracy of things from Jon XD

I'd say another major problem for the Western Empire may be that their entire army was wiped out during a civil war with Theodosius. So they were left with pretty much no army, leaving the Germanic tribes to seize the opportunity. Although frankly I think they could have managed had Carthage not fallen to the Vandals, which left Italy without a steady bread supply and wrecked the Western economy.

@ManyATrueNerd
@ManyATrueNerd 9 жыл бұрын
+Joik666 Well, I meant in the sense that the Empire wasn't really going to grow much at this point, and without constant growth, the Empire was going to run into trouble funding itself, plus a Roman army that increasingly seemed less able to do the impossible, a citizen body less militarily inclined, a Rome increasingly dependent on hand-outs to bribe the people - the seeds of Rome's fall are being sown in this period.
@Joik666
@Joik666 9 жыл бұрын
+Many A True Nerd You're somewhat right that the seed of the destruction is born in this period with a hereditary system. But, the Empire expands under Trajan, with his conquest of Dacia and expanison into Parthia. Hadrian pacifies the borders, and Marcus Aurelius does the same and more or less annihilates the german tribes. From Vespasians takeover after the year of the four emperors (after Neros death), the empire sees peace, growth, more or less stable inflation and few attempts of coups. The army in this period really is in top shape, even though the number of italians are shrinking. But during the reign of Marcus Aurelius you see no reason (other than his son) that this empire could not go on forever, if managed carefully. Of course it is not, in 189, when Commodus takes over (the one from Gladioator, and whos name is shared by a general in this game??) the seed of destruction really is born, with rapid decline in leadership, the praetorian takeover, the soldier-emperors and prosecutions etc. I really must say that I like your historical commentary during the gameplay though, I only got hung up in that one sentence.

So I've been thinking about the magical boob goddess and I believe she maybe Vesta. Vesta isn't the most popular goddess in contemporary culture, but she was essentially the spirit of Rome. It also may explain why she is so bright as her main powers are through the eternal fire of Rome, a "shining" symbol of hope for all of Rome. Sacrifice and family were also part of her domain because of her powers at the hearth, so Marius who sacrificed so much for his family (through revenge but still) and who truly loved and desired to protect Rome would make sense to be a chosen champion for her. However she is dressed pretty provocatively for a virgin goddess. Though a case could be made that she is the brighter side of Nemesis.

I'm sorry, but where are they getting these elephants?? They could only either be Atlas Mountain or Indian... maybe the Parthians chipped in against Rome?

Also, the ending implies that the Roman Empire never collapsed, and is still around in the modern day

Rome was in fact sacked by Gauls in 390 BC (ish), Jon.

+Tadhg McElligott They weren't "French", and I'm aware Britons never invaded Rome. Remember, though, that Jon claimed that Rome never faced direct invasion prior to the Vandals appearing. That just isn't true.

+Heliossoileh - They weren't "French" because France didn't exist, but the Celtic tribes were from what we'd consider France. So cut him some slack.

+TheMrVengeance I don't know what slack you think can be cut. The Gauls that sacked Rome weren't "French"; the fact that some (not all) came from a landmass we now refer to as France is irrelevant to that fact.

Heliossoileh - Considering that the tribe that sacked Rome (the Senones) originated from very close to modern day Paris, I wouldn't nitpick on someone (who most likely isn't an expert) who calls them French, in an attempt to differentiate them from Britons.

@joedalby1819

He's referencing The Aeneid a Classical Epic written by Virgil. In it the main character Aeneas is a Trojan survivor destined to found Rome. However Juno hates the Trojans and poisons the mind of the leader of a local tribe the Rutullians against them. This chap, Turnus, leads the campaign against Aeneas and his Italian allies. During this war Turnus kills Pallas (a local lad Aeneas took under his wing). Eventually Turnus sees the folly of fighting fate and challenges Aeneas to single combat to decide the fate of Italy. Aeneas defeats him and Turnus, on his knees, asks that Aeneas kill him, but spare his people. It seems as though Aeneas may spare him as throughout the Epic he has been developing from a rage driven Homeric Hero to a compassionate Roman Hero. However upon seeing the baldic (sword belt) of Pallas being worn by Turnus as a trophy Aeneas goes into a final bout of furor and executes him. This calls into question his entire character development at killing Turnus was a Book 2 "it's a good ol' day to die" Aeneas move. It's definitely worth a read, it's not very long and far more accessible than something like the Illiad which boils down to "A killed B, B killed C, C lived on a farm once, but still died.
