To celebrate 100,000 subscribers, I've been playing Ryse: Son of Rome, which features a rather ludicrous plot, a baffling take on history, and some very unfair statements about Britain...

The microtransactions in the game are really not necessary. I don't think it was a good idea to implement them in the game but some people are ready to pay to get stuff a bit quicker, the developers knew it and took advantage of it. But again, you DON'T need to buy anything with real money, exept for the game itself obviously.

The only way I can explain Britain needing to be re-conquered and the barbarians invading Rome itself is that Nero ROYALLY fucked up during those extra 30 years of not being dead and the fall of rome is starting significantly ahead of schedule. Doesn't explain the chains or "King Oswald", though. That or this entire game takes place in a Doctor Who-esque time crash and all historical events are happening simultaneously.

One of the things that constantly bugged me about this game was the combat and more specifically his swordplay. If I remember correctly, legionnaires were trained to hold their shield first and then use their swords to stab their enemies from behind the shield, and only in special circumstances where they to use a cutting or chopping motions. Here we see the main character constantly swinging his sword and flailing his shield out to the side, exactly the opposite to how a legionnaire would be trained

+Tom Savine Games often struggle with ancient warfare, because all good ancient warfare is based around discipline, standing together, effectively a strong defensive line that can slowly move forward and crush anything put in front of it, But that doesn't suit a game where you want one character to be a protagonist, and it doesn't work for films either - in 300, the Spartans often break out of the phalanx just to do some one-on-one fighting. The old TV Series Rome had a fairly food representation of what we think Roman fighting was actually like, in which Pullo acts a bit like Marius, and ends up in prison and whipped for his failure of discipline.

My brain is a weird jumble of noise. haha! When you said you were a classicist, brain sort of went... "Wait...Jon practices class discrimination?" but then after a minute I figured it out. haha! Story time: I had something similar happen to me in my grade 10 (Sophmore year) English class in high school. We were reading Julius Caesar and the teacher explained that the "Falling Disease" was Epilepsy, and a student asked "But, why would having epilepsy keep you from being a ruler?" and I interjected, quite "know-it-all" like "Well, how are you suppose rule if you keep falling asleep all the time." There was a moment of silence then the teacher said, very firmly, "Amy, That's narcolepsy."

As long as we are splashing about in an unrealistic, alternate universe... any chance Marius gained some form of immortality via constantly executing people for a health boost whenever he felt a bit sick, lived on in this manner about oh, 20 odd centuries, emigrated to the United States, took a construction job in the southwest, was trapped in some sort of odd Hazmat suit while building a ridiculous Casino Villa, survived a nuclear apocalypse and, in 2281, threw a Pilum 100 yards, between multiple railings through P.D. I like to think that the story writers for this game just recorded a single campaign of Rome: total war, then threaded together some highlights during it into a single narrative for their version of 'Steve the peasant' to fight in with historical names of a common time period thrown in to make it sound like it's historically accurate to the uninformed masses.

Never heard of Budica (sp?) until now, and I empathize for you as a Britain to have a great female leader turned into an irrelevant daughter. That's really a travesty. Congrats on the 100,000 subscribers Jon! You really should have 10 times that to be honest, but I guess that's how the cookie crumbles. I was so lucky to find the hidden gem that is your channel, and I hope it continues to thrive! Keep up the good work!

As a student currently taking a course in western world history through architecture, it gives me great solace hearing you point out all the historical inaccuracies in this game. Thank you, Jon, you are backing up my training with hard core evidence and knowlede! Plus, its super interesting hearing all this from a non-teacher perspective. Yay history!!!!

I knew I'd seen those Scottish people before. Sean Connery's character kills one in Time Bandits. This video is brilliant, Jon. Easily my favorite, and uniquely you. Erudite, amusing, well played, and hilariously satirical. We ought to get you on Radio4 (just so long as you keep making awesome videos)!
