I really like the contrast of Ryuken being such a cold and cynical individual, while being a doctor. I get the feeling that he thought his Quincy heritage brought him nothing but misfortune, so he turned his back on it and instead dedicated his life to saving the living. I do hope his role is expanded upon in the TYBW.

One thing strikes me about Ryuken, and it's why Ywach completely overlooked him despite knowing he killed the former's wife. At first it felt a bit odd, but then I realized that Ywach literally cannot comprehend a Quincy hating him for stealing a loved one's life via the Aüschwälen. To Ywach, it is the greatest honor for any Quincy to give back power to him at the cost of their life, so any Quincy planning a long revenge is foreign to him, and that was his downfall.

I think the reason he keeps all his quincy crosses around has to do heavily with something he said early on. Don't worry about the dead that's a shinigamis job, instead work to protect the living. After all if you pay attention you never see a hollow attack at the hospital.

It's great that in the end, despite the turbulent and aloof relationship Ryuken and Uryu shared, it has started to heal and now Ryuken has his son covered financially for his education with Ichigo. His not objecting to his son's friendship with an ally of 'enemies' so signifies the new era of relations between Shinigami and Quincy in the postwar period. In the end you can't blame Ryuken for his quirks given the many tragedies he endured. Him saving lives as a doctor is a bonus.

I find it interesting how both Ryuken and Isshin practically no longer use their respective powers, but instead focus on helping the living (with Karakura Hospital and Kurosaki Clinic, respectively)

I always thought Ryuken hated the Quincy because their existence ultimately caused Misaki to die since he initially loved and cared for her before she met Isshin. But then again maybe his disdain for them furthered increased when Katagiri also died because of the Quincy. To him the Quincy took almost, if not everything, he ever loved and cared about all for Juha Bach's revival.

Profit doesn't always mean money. It simply means having SOMETHING to gain from the exchange. And given what happened with both Misaki, AND Kanae Katagiri, I can see how he might view being a loyal quincy as a bad deal. As he said: "I chose my words carefully" and "There's no profit in it". These 2 lines likely mean more than what was implied in the video.

"You're an amateur who got slashed by the enemy and almost died. Don't you dare go telling the doctor what he can or cannot do." Daaaamn...spittin hard facts with intensive care after a surgery.

There’s a line in ep 122 of the dub when Ryuken is training Uryu, telling him to carry out the plan. Though there is no such line mentioned in the sub or manga. It would be amazing if said plan referred to working to bring about Yhwach’s downfall.

Isshin and Ryuken vs Ywach would’ve been epic

Definitely one of the strongest, coldest and most impacting characters in Bleach. Really hyped to see what you did with this character!

If you notice, when uryu got to heco mundo he he no longer claims he's the last quienci, instead saying 'tell aizen to be afraid of quiencies'. I think it foreshadows the tybw.

That moment Uryu is about to get pwned by that menos and Rykuen's stfu arrow cuts it's tongue off from a far.. I still remember the song playing as if it was yesterday.. such an impactful entrance.

I think bleach coming back may create a lot of interest in these characters. It may give them spinoff manga or maybe even filler arcs or spinoff anime. In this case then having some wasted potential may be a good thing

Kubo should have given Isshin and Ryuken one fight TOGETHER against a Quincy, like a Naruto/Sasuke moment. That would have been amazing.

I love the theme Ishida has of turning warriors into healers and mentors after they retire through the main duo's fathers. Archetypal in some way I cant explain.

For me Ryuken Ishida sadly was a wasted character in Bleach in terms of potential. I think the whole trope of absent fathers is used too much to a point where its used an excuse for being a jerk and being relatively useless in such a good story. Kudos to Tite Kubo for at least giving them a scene in the Thousand Year Blood War Arc and it had merit.

I really hope that TBYW anime adaptation will change/add some things, especially for the two fathers. In addition to saving their kids in crisis, they both had their own good reasons for joining this war (in particular Ryuuken), just handing over the arrow was a huge disappointment. Hope to see him go to aid Uryu and battle Haschwalth as THE LAST TRUE QUINCY (while for Isshin wouldn't be bad on Ichigo's side against Yhwach, putting him back together, in a similar scene as it was against Aizen).

I saw a video of a guy that gave Schrifts to schriftless Quincys. I forget the name it was but he gave a schrift to Ryuken and it allowed him to see an attack just once and he could see all the weak points in the attack. So if he were fighting Juha he could see that a way to beat his all mighty is Aizens Kyoka Suigetsu and uryu's antithesis which Uryu actually used in the final battle against Juha and Ichigo but nobody noticed.

I would have liked to understand why Ryuken wasn't involved with the Sternritter. It seems like he was part of a different faction, and i'm not sure if they ever went into that. There must have been two quincy factions, so it would have been interesting to see that expanded on some.

Soken Ishida probably hate his father because you understand during his flashback that Ryuken always fight Hollows and she felt alone that probably why he also hates quincy.

I see his role as very missed, given how Yhwach is very likely part of WHY Ryuken stopped caring. Not simply due to him being why his wife died but due to the so drastic shift in what quincies were and how they operated because of Yhwach. I too like others hope to see his role expanded on, since I could easily see the two of them having at least some form of stand off and conversation over a proper fight, and it could further expand on the idea that Yhwach is why Ryuken no longer wanted to be a quincy after losing Masaki, his mother and wife given 2 of them are Yhwach's doing. But also while Ryuken is rather cold he still has a clear ideal clash with Yhwach as well.

Grand! I've always wondered how Uryu managed to survive the Auswahlen, granted that Ryuken Ishida is a pureblood Quincy and his mother, Kanae Katagiri, was a mixed-blood Quincy who didn't survive the Auswahlen. Is there any explanation for that?

When he said there's is no profit from it. It's not just about money, it's about benefits of being a quincy. Being a quincy means you don't belong in the realm of the humans, has the ability to kill off souls and because of that ability you are an enemy to soul reapers, not because the soul reapers would feel threatened but because quincies can only bring off imbalance. There's no pro about becoming a quincy except for having special powers that are not really so special but is just rather damaging to the balance in the bleach universe.

Thanks for this! I also agree that TYBW should have had more Uryu and Souken, given the final boss was a Quincy. It was rushed in the manga for sure, but still amazing that Kubo still managed to flesh out the character and show why he is the way he is, instead of leading us to believe he was just an a hole. What I feel like why Ryuken didn't fought Ywach in the end is a theory of mine that he rather had Ishida avenge his mother than himself. The other one is kinda bad but I feel like kinda true... Remeber that we had this "meme" of Ichigo VS Aizen = Urahara wins? It could have been the same with Yhawach if Ryuken would have just showed up and shoot him and it's over, but it also wouldn't have made sense to make the arrow to just weaken him because that wouldn't excatly justify the process of making the arrow. Maybe in the anime instead if Ichigo & Uryu VS Yhawach we could get an Ichigo & Uryu & Isshin & Ryuken VS Yhawach instead if the dads just coming in saying something and just watching.

Ryuken as a character is a great symbol for how Kubo failed to flesh out the concept of Quincies, and how much potential he's missed out on in TYBW. That silver arrow shit was so contrived, it was an offense to Ryuken as a character.

Why does Ryuken have brown hair and brown eyes in 2:15 - but in every other scene his hair is silver/white and his eyes are gray?

I do hope Cour 2 or further ones add a little bit more scenes to Ryuken, especially about him and his wife. I love Ryuken and the idea that, despite following traditions and family laws, he never related to them or the cause felt nice compared to most of the believers of the Wandenreich. I can't imagine how distraught and enraged Ryuken must have felt to know that both his cousin and his wife died because of some asshole coming back to life. His disdain to both his culture and the conflict is so justified, I just wished it didn't get in the way of his relationship with Uryu.

Anyone else enjoy the rivalry in generations of the Kurosaki and Ishida families? From Isshin and Ryuuken in one generation to Ichigo and Uryu in the next. One could even make the argument that Ichigo, Orihime, and Uryu have a similar dynamic to the one Isshin, Masaki, and Ryuuken had.

I think once Ryuuken understood the circumstances of Kanae's death (he is by no means unobservant), and how the Auswahlen affected both her and Masaki, he must have also realised that Uryuu was somewhat special for surviving it as a gemischt Quincy and was using tough parenting as a way to prepare him for the inevitable battle against Yhwach. Ryuuken must have known about or been involved with the Vandenreich in some capacity (either himself or through Soken as a proxy) to have known about the Stil Silver and it's effects and uses. The Quincy cloak he wears in the big reveal panel with Isshin is pretty similar to the uniform of Uryuu and Haschwalth, too. Ryuuken likely didn't want Uryuu involved with the Quincy as he would have been aware of potential as a descendant of the Ishida bloodline making him a target for Yhwach. Uryuu, however, is a stubborn character just like his father and thrives in adversity, so once Ryuuken realised Uryuu's intentions on becoming the next successor of the Quincy (regardless of his gemischt status), he acted cold and harsh to force Uryuu to grow to his full strength, and allowing Uryuu to avenge Kanae was his final act of acceptance for Uryuu's choices. I think this turning point in the final chapters where Uryuu avenges Kanae by giving Ichigo an opening to kill Yhwach is also a turning point in his and his father's relationship; it is what then pushes it to grow to the point where Uryuu not only accepts Ryuuken's profession (that he previously resented and rejected) but goes on to become a doctor himself. By preserving the spirit realms and the balance of the dead and the living, he has closed that chaotic path in his life and now (mostly) focusses on the living as Ryuuken wanted him to. A nice parallel, especially as they both now contribute to both sides of the cycle, saving living souls whilst also cleansing those that have passed.

Unfortunately, they were all brainwashed. Mauri hinted at this fact as he shared his disgust with their typical quincy rhetoric. They were all the same. Like a cult. I think this is the main reason Ryukin did not want uryu to see his grandfather.
