This movie is one of the perhaps 5 films I have seen in my 55 years that has stayed with me deep in my heart. This is how you make a war film.

When my father took me to watch The Deer Hunter when I was 12, the Russian Roulette scene shook me for month and left me with nightmares. Those nightmares over years evolved into the understanding of how fragile life is and the risks we must take for the reward and the adrenaline that Michael Cimino can fuel as a director!

I saw this movie on a Thursday night in a theater with my sister. I told every guy I knew I’d seen the greatest movie ever. About 4-5 of us went two nights later, beers smuggled in, and I sat through all 3 hours again

the atmosphere of that industrial city is truly shocking. Then comes the freedom of the mountains and the hunt. Finally, hell unleashed. A tremendous movie.

Watched this as a kid on my black & white tv. Got frustrated at the slow first third of the movie. Watched it late whilst flicking thru the channels 30 years later and now understood that part completely. Wonderful film that simply couldn't and wouldn't be made anymore.

Not an easy film to watch. But it truly is a powerful film that studies how war can effect both the people involved and their loved ones. I'd say it makes for a good companion piece with The Best Years of Our Lives. Another excellent film that deals with similar themes.

One of my favorite Vietnam movies of all time. BTW, the film turns 40 this year. The cast is first rate, with special attention paid to both Oscar winner, Christopher Walken and Robert De Niro, who's always effective in whatever roles he placed in.

Seen this movie , and this movie is one of the most intense and amazing films I ever saw , ! I give this movie overall 8.5/10 rating , this movie was really long , 3 hours long but every second I felt involved with the movie... it was amazing and didn't bore me at all , no wonder it won 5 oscars and got 8.2 rating on IMDB, I already knew this is going to be great after sawing Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken in the movie , also Meryl Streep .... I am glad I saw this , this is definitely for some people once in a life time movie but I feel like I will comeback to see this again ... just a true classic masterpiece! enough said.

We actually have a large section of the bar that was used in the movie. The "bar" was built onto the front of another building for the movie. However it actually ended up becoming a bar afterwards. It was known as Welsh's bar. The bar eventually got tore down. Two people ended up getting the bar top itself. We ended up getting one of those sections. It's neat having something that was in such a historical movie like The Deer Hunter.

I miss “The Deer Hunter” trailers from the 80s “The Deer Hunter” era. You didn’t really “The Deer Hunter” know what was going on but “The Deer Hunter” it had an element of suspense. You “The Deer Hunter” didn’t know what the movie was “The Deer Hunter” from a 2 min preview, so you were “The Deer Hunter” always surprised in the theatre.

The trailer has also gotta be on top 10 of gratest trailers ever made. its pressing, dark, and the repeation of films name comes on screen so many times cause M. Cimino knew he had done a greatest american classic since Godfather and thatusualky they have a trailer-voice opening/telling little about the movie/characters or written things that do the same trick. And movies first seem real happy with happy and nice/calm music playing on a trailer, and then the atmosphere starts shifting towards darker and dangerous, the music too, little by little it graduates and the last 15-20seconds are all chaos and nightmare, battles etc. (In war movie trailers, but this goes along with many other films too) But this one keep the straightforvard, pressing, dark style and sound from beginning. even the first part happy and joyish scenes have that pressing and bad-promising sound. The trailer doesnt really inroduce you to a main-characters, even though you can get a clue who they are but it doesnt tell you much more about them. The trailer introduces you to the movie. Cause this film is a movie that was allmost one of a kind in that that it was a film that had great performances from an ensemble cast of actors (walken won the oscar) but like godfather this movie was better than any actors on it, and im not saying they were bad cause they were perfect, but this was from start to finish Michael Ciminos movie. I couldnt choose a better cast to this one and there aint any complains of their acting, not even a slightest. But in this movie the director was the ultimate star. Say what you say of Ciminos career after this one, but in this movie he outshined the greatest actors of our time: M. Streep arguably the greates female actor of those days and on present days too, J. Cazale a talent who died too early. All the films which he appeared are considered greatest films of cinema history Godfather/II, Dog day afternoon, conversation and this one. Everyone of them were nominated in oscars for best movie an if i remember correctly two win that prize. C. Walken the eccentric and very talented actor. Best in playing supporting roles of guys that are criminals, nutheads or otherwise threatening or unstable, could be called today by the name of king of supporting roles. R. DeNiro 70's & 80's and most of the 90's he was thousand times that what DiCaprio is today. (I love Leo, dont get me wrong!) He worked with Coppola, Leone, Scorcese and many more who are considered to be greatest directors of all time. And just like Meryl, DeNiro is the greatest man actor of our time. He had the best of the best, greatest of the greatest. Actors who fit their roles each one perfectly AND still he outshined them. Make no mistake this is Ciminos movie and after that we can talk the actors.. Many critizizes hardly and sharply hes career after this movie BUT there is only handfull of directors that have outshined a star on their movie. Even if director wons oscar and the star actor dont. M. Cimino didnt have just one or two stars in his movie. He had four of the grates actors of all time, two were the best lead actors in cinema history and other two greates supporting actors of our times, most def. Four greatest actors in cinema history and strong supporting crew, very strong. even that ensemble cast couldnt outshine the director. still today the Deerhunter is a movie of director, Michael Cimino.

Hope they never do a remake of this classic but if ever they do. Josh Brolin is only actor who could play the Michael Vronsky (DeNiro) character. His range in W was superb.
