There is no question that the wooly bugger is an effective and versatile fly. This is a variation of it that I find make it more effective for targeting bass. While I have used it for largemouth in the past, this specific tie is for smallmouth bass. Being chartreuse, (a popular color pattern for smallmouth in my area) it works great! Along with 2 other fly patterns, I was able to get 12+ smallmouth bass the last trip I took. This one alone got 3 of them.
This fly could be tied a bit smaller, or larger for other species as well. I find a size 8-10 hook works well with trout (also a regular sized zonker) and a size 1/0-3/0 works well for pike. You could also use this for walleye (6-10 size) or crappie (10-14 size). You can change the colors up to what ever suits your area. So give it a try!

Thanks man! Yeah give it a try! Bass will eat this up. For largemouth try a more brown or olive. Even try using a dumbbell on the top to turn the point over and reverse all the materials to the opposite side. This will allow you to fish the bottom with no snagging, this could be a good crawfish pattern as well.

I am going to be rude and impulsive here I suppose. I follow several folks who do a lot of fly fishing videos.The one courtesy I can extend to them for their trouble, is to watch the ad at the beginning of the show. There is not a lot of money per watch, but when enough of us do it and the McFly videos multiply, then maybe it will help pay for some expenses. I look at it as an easy thank you for the work that folks put into sharing their information with us.
@McFlyAngler

This is not rude. Its a nice gesture. However I would never ask people to watch or click. In fact I'm not supposed to ask this. All I can say is thank you thats kind, but I'm just happy to have you (and all my subscribers) watch. There is no need to watch the ads. I appreciate you just the way you are. :)

Thats a good fly. I tie and fish a bunny bugger variant - marabou tail as std with the body getting a dubbing under body and a "hackle" of rabbit fur. I used to wrap zonker strips but have since done away with that, using dubbing loops and spinning rabbit fur into it. A bit of flash, ice dub, or laser dub can be added for extra attraction. Unweighted they sink slow and suspend. Weighted they go deeper, obviously but need a stout rod to cast well. Works well on bass, trout, even panfish that get real hungry.

May i ask a dumb question... Why is the eye pointed down? I have straight eye streamer hooks. would that ruin the action? Does it make the hook ride down? I guess i am just being cheap but didn't want to run out and get the hook if it wasn't really needed. Thanks for any insight. Sorry i know i bug you a lot lately but been learning alot from you. i do appreciate it.
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 7 жыл бұрын
No, just use the straight eye. I am using this one because its what I have. Eye down makes it jig a bit more, and straight eye will do more of a glide. But it all works. No your not bugging man! :) Its all good.

@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 7 жыл бұрын
I got ya. Yeah, that could work if you don't have UV resin. Just so you know, Solarez has a sample pack for $8 or something like that... Its not too badly priced. Of course you would need to get a curing light. They sell that same kit with a light for like $40 or something... But If thats too much, they do sell some Chinese made ones online. They aren't too good of quality, and might break within a few months, but it would get you started. But really for this fly, its not too necessary, just use the dubbing like you said.

Well at the lake I used to fish for them, I would throw a sink tip often. But also floating line as well. However where I live now it’s mostly rivers and creeks which sink tips are not necessary.

Hey man, on average how much thread do you go through an a bass type fly? I.e. Clouser/streamer.
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 5 жыл бұрын
Not much man, a spool will last probably 100+ flies. Just learn thread control. Try to tie them with less thread. No need for extra wraps when you attach materials.
@davidaguiar1387
@davidaguiar1387 5 жыл бұрын
@@McFlyAngler Agreed. Generally speaking, 2-3 wraps is all thats needed to tie in any material. If your attaching multiple materials on in the same tie in point, you can even back a wrap or two out before the next material. This helps keep the fly neet without bulges of thread building up. Learning this kind of thread control is critical as your flies get smaller . ( i.e like dry flies or midges for trout.)

@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 7 жыл бұрын
It depends on the fly.... For instance, if I start tying small (easy) midges, like zebra midge, KF Emerger's, etc.... I will tie like 20+ of them. Just get a lot of them done. But for streamers, it can be 2-10 depending. I will tie up 10 wooly buggers, but some of the larger more complicated flies (like my squishy head bluegill) I will tie only 2, because they take 45 minutes to tie. Also, I generally don't loose as many streamers as small midges/nymphs. I am dredging the bottom with the midges, so I will loose a lot. But for streamers, I am fishing a heavier line, and I rarely loose them since they are mostly on the top of the water, or at least suspended.
