What it sounds like is the Fly Tying thread industry has absolutely zero concern about following standards and need to get their sh*t together. Here's what he should have presented: A particular thread’s denier equals the gram weight of 9,000 meters of thread. Therefore the lighter the thread, the lower the denier and vice versa. Aught (0) size is an older, less accurate definition with the more ‘0’s” indicating finer thread. Therefore, an 8/0 thread which would be measured as 8 zero’s is much finer than a 3/0 thread which would have 3 zero’s as a measurement. So larger Aught means thinner and lower Denier means lighter.

I mean it’s a bunch of different companies, hard to force them all into a standardized system when they already each have their own. I agree it would be easier for new tiers. But it would probably be impossible without getting courts involved to force companies to change. As for explaining high detail with the threads, I didn’t really feel like getting into that level of depth. This video was for newbies getting into tying. I just wanted to get them aware of the different brands and what to look for. Surface level stuff rather than diving deep into it. I figure most people interested in the deep stuff probably already know enough about the brands and what thread they should or should not use. No question though my video wasn’t perfect. I’m human and don’t always say everything needed. I’m sure there is a lot that should be said that I missed

Hello. Do you still stand by Risen's fly rods? If so, have you tried their 23ps euro rods? Got the tight line nymphing bug and am having a tough time picking a dedicated nymph rod. Figured i would support a Christian company, but honestly it is hard to find out much about them. Thank you so much for your time. Love your videos.
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 2 сағат бұрын
Yes I love their rods. I have not specifically fished their euro nymphing rod sizes but I do have a couple 23ps in the 9’ variety’s. Great rods! Nice sensitive tips, but a very strong and stiff backbone. For the money, I don’t think there are better rods out there honestly. Use my discount code for 15% off, that will help make it even better of a deal. I don’t fish with any other gear but risen rods. Great stuff.

Good evening, my dear friend, I am following you from an Arab country. We do not have a method for fly fishing We have carp in the river, but we catch them using the traditional method of yellow corn or wheat flour dough...but you have to be patient for long hours until you catch. I want advice from you, my friend. What is the most favorite fly for carp, and what is the most favorite smell for carp that attracts it to it? Do you advise me whether the fly should be on the surface of the water or go down to the depth? Please reply.. Your friend Abu Imran
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler Сағат бұрын
Every river or lake is different when it comes to fishing any species, carp included. I would not be able to say what fly works best for carp in your area. Here though, small crayfish patterns seem to work well. But I’m not sure your lakes common forage.

what would you say is the best fly for stocked rainbow trout in lakes
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler Сағат бұрын
Depends on the lake. But generally flashy and brightly colored flies work well. There is another technique of tying flies that look like the pellet foods they feed them at hatcheries.

Love your videos. Question....What can you do to help the fly land upright in the water? Will it right itself from the weight of the hook?
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 14 күн бұрын
Not all flies do right themselves, however if tied right they should most of the time. The weight of the hook will sink, and the foam or whatever type of floating material used, which is on top of the hook will float so it keeps it wanting to stay upright. Might take a few tries tying before you can figure out positioning for each material to get it to land right each time. But it doesn’t always every time.

This is the UNI knot. The "Duncan Loop/Knot" puts a loop in the STANDING part of the line just BEFORE the eye, then the tag is passed thru and then wrapped around. Adjust to the size you want. The loop binds on the wraps therefore locking whatever size loop you made, in place. The "Uni Knot" puts a loop in the TAG/WORKING end AFTER you pass thru the eye then you wrap as before. You have made a barrel knot on the TAG end or "back on itself" thereby allowing the now formed loop to slide on the WORKING end. Similar construction - different results.

First of all id like to thank you for mention me in your video. You did a pretty good job on this Pattern. Please allow me to give you a usefull advise on getting allways the right width for the wing. Take a spare hook of the one you tie on and use it as a measurement tool. Lean the shank loosely to the underside of the fibers and stick the point through to separate the upper. So you allways get a wing sized the hook gap, wich Classic wet Flys ask for. Hope its understandable, due english is foreign for me… At least you motivated me to make a Video myself to this pattern and will upload it. Will be my first 😜

Thanks! I generally will fish an unweighted fly behind a weighted fly to get it down. But in really slow moving water yes it can sink.

I've been doing this a long time with dubbing in the middle of the tape. Clear tape also takes a highlighter pretty well too, so with both you can come up with some pretty unique patterns. The feather is top notch though!
