I'm gonna be very honest when I saw that picture years back I honestly thought he was holding a ruger rifle or a custom made m14 or an AR18. But after finding out it was a K1A1 I was thinking Holy shit they made those idiot rioters get a taste of Korean FirePower and I thought that it was only used in the South Korean military that carried it but finding out that it was also used in the U.S. that is an absolute surprise.

They all moved away to other cities sadly so I don't see them often, but I grew around them eating their grandmas homemade kimchi (my best friend would call me when it was being dug up from the backyard) and drinking Korean corn-hair tea during the summer. Ah good times. One of my closest Korean-American friends in Austin, TX, thanks to your youtube channel, was inspired to get into shooting and owns more guns than I do now. He also proudly wears a "Roof-top Korean" patch on his plate carrier. You should check out the K1A MLOK handguard made by MITS Precision! Their rails being supplied to ROK troops to modernize the K1A and K2 and can be found in the US via 701tactical. Also another thing to note (haven't reached that far yet so I'm not sure if you address it or not) - civilian K1A in the US are 1/12" twist, but K1A in ROK service have been rebarreled with 1/7" twist barrels. Additionally, AR-style stock adaptors are starting to become the norm, at least among the special operations community.

Outstanding video. I owned a K1A1 for over 20 years, it was basically a range toy, but I owned it before I understood its significance in the heirarchy of combat firearms. I regret selling mine more than any firearm I've ever owned and sold, and could not replace it now for 5 times what I originally paid in 1985 when I bought it. I sold it around 15 years ago but clearly remember how well it performed. One other thing I remember about it was how far it ejected spent cases and always left a heavy crease on them where they hit the back corner of the ejection port on their way out, a sign of over-gassing, as you might expect, given the original had a shorter barrel. I didn't understand all that technical stuff until way later when I built my AR's. One of its most endearing qualities to me is how simple the original K1A1 looks, Exterior is smooth, nothing hanging off like lights, scopes, front pistol grips; it is a very elegant rifle, I wish I had another one just like it.

This video went hard in the intro. Loved it. As a Marine I was in Japan during the LA Riots. I got back stateside and found out that I had friends that were stationed at Pendleton that got deployed to LA! That was crazy! I don't know if people knew that it wasn't just the California National Guard that was sent out. There's a story about a Marine Corps squad or fireteam escorting LAPD to arrest a gang banger that pretty hilarious. They know the gangbanger might be armed so the police tell the Marines to cover them as they approach the residence. The police officers walked to the front door and the Marines deployed into firing positions. The Marines opened fire immediately with M16A2s and the roof mounted M2 50 on the Humvee. The police were curled on the ground yelling. The Marines ceased fire and asked confused what's the problem, you asked for cover fire. The cops said, we said cover us. The Marines said we did. Meanwhile the gangster was screaming at the top of his lungs "I surrender" "I surrender"! He was hiding in the bathtub with a full auto AK thrown onto the floor. He was planning on shooting the cops. Until the Marines lit his entire home up with cover fire. Did this really happen? I was told this when I got back in '92. I choose to believe it because it's a great story and sounds like something we would do. Words have different meanings depending on your occupation.

As a veteran of the Republic of Korea Army, I am delighted with this review. As a person who has used K1A for 9 months and K2 for 1 year, K1A: In addition to special warfare, it is mainly supplied to classes where direct rifle combat is rare, such as transport, supply, and tank crew. In that regard, the actual gun zero is adjusted at around 100m, and during shooting training, only practice for 100m and 200m targets. (Add 250m target for K2) Used as a de facto PDW concept. Short aimpoint distance and no contact point due to wire stock makes it very difficult to keep aim while shooting. However, from the point of view of operators, light and short firearms are much preferred because they are much more comfortable for position work and activities. In that respect, Henry's shooting is personally quite impressive.

Well done, fellas. Excellent tribute to the rooftops. I interviewed ROK SEAL and owner of Redcell Korea, Jon Park, on my channel and he went into their service weapons during his time in. He noted that they were using the HK416 10.5" variant during his time but the modernized K-series rifles were starting to be more prevalent. It's understandable that the ROK SEALS were influenced by their US counterparts considering the cross-training but also, as you've noted, the seeking of nationalism and localizing firearms design.

In fact, the reason why Korea's SOF uses K1C instead of AR15 is because of budget and various military problems. Many Korean SOF members want the AR15 and some lucky units (CT unit in ROK SEAL) have it.

You discussed the recoil system of the AR15 compared to other systems like the Daewoo, AR18/180, etc. With regards to the Law Folder, I have one on my SBR for storage purposes only. Folding/collapsing stocks should only be folded/collapsed for storage 99% of the time. There is some potential for needing it in really tight spaces where you need to shoot with the stock folded such as inside a car. I think the value of the recoil system in the receiver vs. the stock is not in the ability to shoot in it's condensed format, but the fact that damage to the stock doesn't take the gun totally out of service. I'm old. When I was in JROTC in high school, our Officer was a recently retired Special Forces Major. I remember one war story where he had to buttstroke a VC and it was enough to bend the receiver extension of his M16 and as a result he fired one round, the rifle was no longer functional and he had to pick up an M1 carbine from a fallen Hmong he was leading. In last year's Finnish Brutality match, an unnamed competitor from Slovenia had the buttstock of his Yugo AK break. He continued in the stage without a stock, but a rifle that could still shoot. So I'll agree with Henry that the AR recoil system is flawed because it is easier to take out of action than a design that puts it in the receiver where it is better protected.

Folding stocks are neat in very specific scenarios but if I remember correctly Stoner reasoned that it was a more efficient use of space to have a buffer tube in the stock because no one would realistically need to fire their rifle with the stock folded. He might have a point since even the koreans are putting m4 stocks on their k1 rifles.

So much so that I shot an Appleseed with it once upon a time. Now if you give it 62gr SS109 (the last time I tried that), they will keyhole perfectly sideways at 25 😅

FWIW, when zeroed at 300 metres, you may want to try placing the top of the front sight at the top of the aperture and holding centre of mass on target. It is possible that the hit will be near centre of mass. If that hit is low, try zeroing the ghost ring at 300 metres and placing the top of the front sight at the top of the ghost ring aperture, instead of in the centre, while holding the top of the front sight on centre of mass. Elmer Keith did a similar thing with his revolver at extended range, raising the front post above the rear sight. I believe that the top of the rear sight was held at the level of the bullet that missed low with a conventional sight picture.
