Most underrated bass drum section in the SWAC. I can imagine how loud they could be if they switched back to the silver dots. The ebony pinstripes holding them back though they have a dead sound.

Mixed feelings. Not the STIX I grew up watching but nice and together.

None of these SWACS or HBCUs are what they used to be, but thankfully a lot of them like you said are still pretty put together.

@@KM-px8cs Jackson State and Southern have done a pretty good job keeping up with the times while holding on to their core identity. Even PVAMU. Lines like Alabama State have their core identity but haven't kept up. Then other schools totally threw their identity away. Sure they sound good but I look at half of them and they're all gravitating towards the WT style. I guess that's a good thing about BCU in the SWAC. Those guys aren't bending their identity for anyone..

The problem that we have with another drumline adopting someone else's style is that it will never be the same. They're inspired by WT but they're not playing with the same level of aggression or conviction that WT's style demands. This tuning and writing 100% serves Jackson State's approach to playing. So I say that they just identify what style they want to have as their approach to music and write for that particular sound. I don't think anything was wrong with STIX. I just think that they could have stood to tighten up in the area of discipline (I see way too much extra movement and talking during playing whenever I go to a game. That has been an issue since 1999) and needing to update their material: more chops. They could have kept all the old school cadences for tradition and homecoming and kept the same tuning. Just those two things were all they needed, IMO.

@@DrumLuv23 Don't forget about Tennessee State and FAMU they still use original drums, styles and cadences.
