We left our accommodation and made two stops before we reached the small settlement of Storms River Village. The first one was the famous Storms River Bridge where we filled up with fuel and then took a walk to the beautiful viewpoint at the Petroport. Then we walked through under the bridge and over to see the stunning gorge from the top. This is an absolute must-stop for everyone travelling here. The second stop was at the Tsitsikamma Big Tree. The lady allowed us in with the vehicle so that Sonia could walk a shorter distance to also see the tree. It is 1000 years old, stands 36,5 meters tall and has a circumference of over 8 meters. Spectacular! Then it was off to the village. What an amazing place! It always blows my mind to think that not too long ago, even in the early 1800’s herds of elephant used to migrate across these forests. So sad to think they are all but gone now! #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #stormsriver #gardenroute #tsitsikamma

Another nostalgic visit to another of my favourite places. Back 22years ago I did some leather craft training, of a small group of local women, a memory I cherish. I think they close the road now, but if you followed the road down, it takes one down the old stormsriver pass, used before the bridge was built. At the bottom its beautiful and wild. Its where the blackwater tubing starts from and ends at the mouth. My daughter said she,s fed the cat at the petrol stop lookout, it clearly is overweight, shame. I,m pleased they allowed you to drive to the big tree, neaby is the old big tree, which fell down. I,m looking forward to Natures Valley I grew up going to our cottage there until it was sold by my dad. We grew up when there was no electricity there, so it was gas lights and cooking and fires. Those were the best days. Thankyou for the memories, travel safely

I think that kitty-kat gets fed by every second person who stops there, it needs to start running around on those decks to lose a little bit of that padding. If I'd given Sonia half a chance, it would've had a cold pizza slice for breakfast. 🍕😻 I wish we took that road to the old Stormsriver Pass, it certainly sounds stunning and I'll make a point to drive there when we're in the area again. Hopefully as you travel with us through this area that you know so well, a flood of special memories come back. It's fantastic having you along for the ride. 😁🚗

@DustBugsTravel
@DustBugsTravel Жыл бұрын
I so badly wanted to take it, but when I was planning our route, I saw it was closed due to poor maintenance. It was our last day and we still had quite a stretch, so this was one 'Closed' sign that I did obey! 😏 I believe motorcycles still ride on the pass fairly often. Hopefully the authorities will get their act together and make it passable for vehicles again. 🚗🛣️
@aginn9506
@aginn9506 Жыл бұрын
@@DustBugsTravel A real pity, you just ignore the signs, and take the old pass. Locsls have removed the blockage enough for cars to pass, just have to avoid some overgrown roadside trees and shrubs and debris. Otherwise be aware of on comming traffic as the road has narrowed as a result of no maintainance. Definately enjoying your travels with you guys, thankyou

O my word thank you for taking me back to see Big Tree.. brought tears to my eyes, like seeing and old friend again.. I have photos of a friend and I hugging Big Tree about 35 years ago..there was just a walk-way going round her then, close enough to touch her.. glad they've put a barrier up now..can see she bares a few scars...🚗✨💖

Those tears sound like happy ones and we completely get it! What an amazing memory that you have and how wonderful that the tree is still around! 🌳💚 Sonia thought the branches spreading out at the bottom of the trunk looked like feet, so we gave it a human quality right there and then. We were in awe of this magnificent tree and will go and visit again when we're in the area. We're normally quite loud, but felt we had to whisper in the presence of such a miracle of nature. 😊

I have walked accross Stormsriver bridge, and stood shaking in my North STars at the sight of the Long Drop to the bottom! Beautiful piece of the world. Love the big ancient tree. There are also lovely trees here in NZ. Forest sounds are medicine to the ears. Thanks guys!

Oooooo this is just the most amazing place ever!!!! The frogs and birds is unreal!!!! You cannot believe that a tree can be THAT OLD and still standing. Loved the Log cabin you stayed in. Damn Sonia what a pity about your knee. I have wondered why you don't walk with Curtis. Get a wheelchair girl!!! Why would you miss out😂♥️♥️Good that your doing this now while your still fairly able. Storms River Village have Tree Top slides or what ever they call it. We did this yrs ago and it was amazing!!! Beautiful places in the Eastern Cape. You would LOVE Hole in The Wall it just gravel road. The Kwid would do it but you must not drive it in the night......soooo many potholes (dongas')
@DustBugsTravel

The sounds of the forest were just the coolest thing ever. We sometimes struggle to be quiet, but it was easier there somehow. 🌳 Sonia is totally fine on short, even surfaces, but the longer, uneven ones and stairs are a little more problematic. She'll need a 4x4 wheelchair to go some of the places I climb and crawl up! 😁 Although the Kwid takes us most places, we hate driving at night, we're just not comfortable. Sometimes it's unavoidable though. Nice to have you along on our travels! 🤩🚗

As always, thanks for your videos. We last went to Tsitsikamma 40 years ago. We're surprised by how its grow and how much has changed. If you have time, try the old Storms River Pass and Storms River Mouth. Check the pass first - its very old, gravel and may be either closed off or impassable. Kind regards.

It must be interesting for you to compare what the park looks like today to when you were there last! We visited the area a few weeks ago already, so aren't close to the park anymore. Another viewer mentioned that the pass may be closed, but we'll certainly keep it in mind when we visit the area again. We love gravel road passes! 😁 Because the road was closed for construction, we couldn't reach the Mouth, but hopefully it'll be reachable by vehicle again when we make another trip back there. We appreciate you watching our video! 🤩🌊

Do you know why Hardidaar's make that noise: "Because they have a fear of heights". We have also visited the Storms River Village, We stayed at the X-Tream area. In a closed in tent . Was a great experience staying and driving to the Big bungie jumps of the bridge. (But we didn't jump. Just watched). Thanks for sharing your travels and your thoughts. Regards from East London.
