It’s amazing when one enters a town you can immediately sense the vibe and Wepener was no different. The first garage we saw was closed down and then upon entering the main road, the first building we came across, was the absolutely gorgeous Wepener Town Hall, but it was unfortunately completely destroyed. We found out later that there was a fire a few years ago which caused so much damage to this building. It was truly a sad sight to see a spectacular building built in 1927 in this condition! The Wepener Hotel was not in a great condition either and so many other places were just destroyed and abandoned as well. In other parts of the town again the houses looked great and the churches also were in good condition. Not to mention the Lord Fraser Guest House where we spent the night, this place is a true oasis. It was fantastic to stay there and the food was awesome too, we couldn’t have asked for more. Because the town is located on the Lesotho border, we had to go and check out the border crossing at Van Rooyen's Gate and that is exactly what we did! #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #wepener #freestate #lesotho #border

Hi there, somebody sent me this video of Wepener today. I was born in the Frontier Hotel, which I see is practically burnt down, and the Wepener Hotel in such a state of disrepair, also owned by my parents. My mother ran the one hotel, my father ran the other hotel, and such was life in Wepener. The City hall was used as the local cinema. My 3 brothers and I attended the local school. I was so grateful to have seen this video. Enjoy travelling these dorpies which bring back so many wonderful memories. I am writing from Israel and feel very nostalgic. Sincerely, Hilary

Greetings to you in Israel! Wow, it was so interesting, albeit a little sad, to read about your memories of your birthplace. 😥 That Town Hall still gives us nightmares to be honest, that hit us both really, really hard. We've seen many derelict and abandoned buildings on our travels, but this one for some reason was different. It must've been a magnificent building in its heyday. In fact, it still is today. 🏤😍 We're glad you got to see our video of present-day Wepener and we hope that you'll visit all the other small towns with us too. We visited 21 of them in the southern Free State during this trip. 😁🚗

Aha! Another train-watching mecca from my childhood. Also the name of two of my most hated primary school teachers. That poor beautiful town hall should be restored! That looked like real good old boerekos! Lovely place you stayed in. The birdsong is so beautiful. The front door is a work of art.

The Town Hall broke our hearts! 💔 I bet one of those two teachers named Wepener taught Maths, it just sounds like it has to be! Our guesthouse has been beautifully-restored and is such an authentic place. It was a fantastic oasis in Wepener and the food was spectacular. It was the perfect end to a busy travelling day in the Free State. 🚗😁

We agree, our hearts were broken too. 💔 Sonia couldn't get the image of that gorgeous Town Hall building out of her head for the remainder of our trip. That guesthouse was on another level! We felt super spoilt and just had the most relaxing time, it's truly an oasis in town. The care and detail with which the entire property was restored, demonstrates the faith that some folks still have in our small towns and in our country. It has to be commended. 😍🇿🇦 Thank you for joining us in Wepener.

Wepener is my childhood town where I grew up and still visit on a regular basis. The decay of Wepener was not only due to neglection of properties, but a huge part was after the flood of 1988. The houses next to the Sandrivier, which was flooded, was expropriated by the government, and declared flood line area. This was nearly half the town, and the street outskirts can still be seen on Google earth. Businesses, houses and families left - and added to the sad story. But Wepener is still near to my heart and will always be. I also wrote a short summary of the history of the man, Kmndt Louw Wepener.

Yes, thank you @ Santa Ferreira for your enlightening explanation as to why this little town appears to be worse off in terms of care and maintenance, than so many others Sonia and Curtis have visited. We were very sad to see the gorgeous Town Hall building in such a state though. 😢💔 The drive to the station was interesting and it's quite clear that a train hasn't come through there in a good couple of years. The Lesotho border post certainly looked more organised than the one you described, that sounds like a rather eventful experience, I must say. 😁 The church was a very beautiful and well-maintained building which was great to see. I think we eventually managed to spot the feathers at the top of the steeple. 🤔⛪

This is very sad. My great great grandfather, the Rev Edmund William Stenson, was the first Anglican missionary in southern Lesotho at Mohales Hoek (1875-1881) and then moved to and ministered in Wepener from the time of the Gun War in Bastutoland - during which time his church and home in Mohales Hoek were destroyed. I think the church he ministered at in Wepener is St Johns (which I have not been able to locate on a map and was hoping it might appear in the video. Sadly not). I have not yet been able to visit Wepener to see the church and try to find where Edmund lived in the years he was there - having seen the Town Hall I wonder if any historical records still exist?

We were also saddened by some of the decay we saw in town. 😢 Thank you for sharing the story of your great-grandfather with us and what a story that is! I thought we covered the town pretty well during our visit and we love stopping at churches, but we didn't notice the St Johns Church and I am also not able to locate it on a map. It is indeed very possible we could've missed it, but I have no idea where it is. The closest we could find with a similar name is the St John the Evangelist Church in the Morojaneng area of Dewetsdorp, which is a Catholic Church. ⛪ Having seen that the Town Hall in Wepener is merely a shell of a building and given that it was destroyed by fire, I hate to say that I doubt there would be any historical records which remained intact, but again I don't know this for a fact. Perhaps if you get in touch with the Naledi Local Municipality, they may be able to assist you and provide you with information which will assist you in your search and research. I do hope you get to visit the town yourself one day. Thank you for watching our video in the meantime. 😊🚗

@@DustBugsTravel Thanks for your response! St Johns is still listed in the Bloemfontein diocese as one of 69 in-place churches - Zastron's St Athanasius is also on my 'to do' list, as is an elusive one in Modderpoort - where I believe my great great grandmother was buried in 1888.

Thank you for the info. We often look up facts on Wikipedia and other sites while we travel, but lately we don't always have cellphone signal when in the smaller towns. We then chat to the locals to fill in some of the missing puzzle pieces. 😊⛪

@@DustBugsTravel I read that the fire was due to “a suspected electrical fault” as a result of “poor maintenance”?
@DustBugsTravel

There seem to be conflicting reports online. Another reason we don't do too much research before or during a trip. 🤷🏼‍♂️ After a little digging, I read on the website of OFM that an electrical fault was initially suspected, but it was later confirmed that a vagrant who lived on the premises was suspected for setting the building alight. How incredibly sad that a building of this stature is only a skeleton now, whatever the real cause of the fire. 💔🏤

The church I was looking for in Wepener is St Peters - I came across a photo taken in 1969(!). On an unrelated note, did you need to apply for any sort of permit to use the drone or is the usage for your channel purely 'recreational'?

Why are these beautiful small and villages dying in decay? Employment, crime or pipo just feel new fashioned?
@DustBugsTravel
@DustBugsTravel Жыл бұрын
As in most small towns, employment opportunities declined over time and they were depopulated as people moved away to the bigger centres and cities in order to earn a living. There are always unfortunately those who feel the need to destroy buildings and of course the history associated with them, which seems to be a sad culture in our country nowadays and something we sadly observe in almost every place we visit. 😢 Yet there are very warm and friendly folks who still live in all these towns and who still call them home. And as long as that is the case, the towns will survive, albeit on a much smaller scale than before. It all comes down to basic respect for one's own environment in our opinion. 🤷🏼‍♂️🇿🇦

We visited the place in 2014 and saw how it was rioted by small young blacks breaking down the woodwork. When the saw us they ran. Most of all the town halls in small towns have the same fate - in KZN , MP etc. We are also doing roadtrips every second year. I am always sad and angry to see these deterioting of old buildings that's why I will never be part of the rainbow nation! No respect of values for anything. Also the sport facilities/ swimming pools/ camping places a mess. They riot everything for money and money is the beginning of all evil!
