The drive on the gravel road from Hondeklip Bay to Koingnaas was awesome and to see the bridge which was destroyed by a flood was incredible. Sometimes a person just can’t comprehend the power and force of nature. We were totally fascinated by this mining community which is in the heart of the Namaqualand Sandveld and located on the longest stretch of coastal desert in the world. The first thing we had to do was fuel up because there is no fuel station in Hondeklip Bay and the closest one is in Koingnaas. After that we needed food and so we headed to Klein Oqis to buy toasties. Then we explored the rest of the town and it was a captivating experience. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #koingnaas #northerncape #namaqualand #diamonds #sandveld #hondeklipbay

The busses used to drive through town and picking up people/workers dropping them off at the mine and in town, your private vehicle was parked in the garages that you saw. Usually only the foreman had a company vehicle to drive with in town usually on standby etc. Oranjemund in Namibia, Alexander Bay, Kleinzee was exactly the same as most of the diamond mining town in the area. I was born in Oranjemund, best time of my life.

I see you found the chap that lives in what used to be the De Beers community center building with its revolving front door, I forget his name. He owns a lot of the properties in Koingnaas as well as the air strip and only hangar. He also has a number of offroad "pyp karre" that you can rent to play around in the old mine dumps - great fun. So sad to see what has happened to Koingaas. Used to go work there many times in the early 90s and even went there for the Oktoberfest, not sure if that's what it was. Had a great time. Ofcourse, the usual suspects have dropped it like a hot potato since they've pulled all the riches out and enriched themselves. Just like Jagersfontein and many others.

It's sad, yet interesting, to read how Koingnaas has changed from when you knew it in the 90's. When we heard that the population had decreased from over 1000 to just 120 or so, we knew it had to have looked very different back in the day. Thank you for watching our video! 😊🚗

Well at last I have seen a lot more of Koingnaas than I have seen before...we always just drove in to that shop with the Bottle store....that is now closed...that shop was well stocked before. Last time we were there to put in fuel Dudley was the owner, he also took us on the shipwreck route there along the coast. Next stop I suppose will be the windy Kleinzee....another very interesting little place...I think you can still buy a house there....maybe even dig for diamonds.. 🙂. A very Merry Christmas for you and Sonia.

Interesting that you've visited that liquor store before, I was wondering whether we'll hear from someone who has while it was still open. Perhaps when you pass through again, you can pop in at not only a liquor store, but a bakery and butchery at the same time. That would be awesome if those plans come to fruition! 👌🏻 Dudley is still very much the owner of the filling station and we had an interesting chat with him. As you know, he's lived there for many years, so knows quite a bit about the place. 👌🚗 Thank you for always going on the road with us and for your good wishes. 😊 Sonia and I would like to wish you and your loved ones a fantastic Christmas with lots of blessings and joy. 🎄🌟

The town itself is a diamond, perhaps a little unpolished, however with the right investment it too can shine bright once more. Many entrepreneurs unfortunately think that they can strike it rich by attempting to rejuvenate businesses that have long closed down, unfortunately many do not perform market research and burn their fingers with their ambitious plans. To the trained eye those garages of the homes are significant as each has a covered section for a boat or a caravan... the developers designed prosperity into those homes. Speaking of which, I was driving with my client in his Porsche where I remarked that I had just been in Denver next to Joburg (he grew up there, poor)...and had seen a pothole large enough that his Porsche could fit into it, he replied "so its (Denver) improving" ...and that mindset describes many of the towns and villages that we have visited with you. Some see dumps whilst others see diamonds. What I have realized is that the number 1 asset class in real estate is residential housing and not commercial and industrial. Your videos showcase this.

I'm a bit of an idealist, so I really hope those guys can revive that shopping centre by starting the three ventures they have planned. It will certainly provide places where the locals who are left, can spend their money. We saw a total of three places where that can happen now, but we may have missed some. That doesn't provide a lot of options. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Shopping in Hondeklip Bay is also extremely limited and, since those folks come to Koingnaas regularly for fuel, they can attract that business too. 🤞 I snap out of real estate mode the moment we hit the road, so I didn't notice the covered sections of the garages as we drove by. 😏 We're of the Denver mindset too, it seems. We didn't even realise the potholes were so many and so bad until we watched the footage when I started editing. We thought there was only one bad spot in town! 😁🛣️

The long garages...don't know what you have found out but Alexander Bay had the same set up with residents living inside the 'binne kamp', ie. people living within the security fences of the mines. They stored their cars on the outside in these buildings.

@DustBugsTravel
@DustBugsTravel Жыл бұрын
@Hannes van Niekerk Thank you for the info. 👍🏻 We understood the initial purpose of the garages to be for the vehicles of the mine employees who lived in the accommodation facilities provided by De Beers and each unit was allocated one or two garages, depending on how many employees lived in the unit. Since the mining operations have drastically been reduced, this is no longer their sole purpose though and they are now used for random storage and being converted into accommodation as we showed in the one clip. We didn't notice similar garages further along on our travels, but we could've missed them. They certainly didn't stand out to us like at Koingnaas. 😁

I suppose this was a lovely place to live and work before 94, My question is where is the water for such a large town coming from? If you look at the size of some of those trees and even the sports fields there must have been plenty water at some stage. Such a heartache that a once thriving country is going down the drain.
@DustBugsTravel
@DustBugsTravel Жыл бұрын
Our understanding is that the decline in Koingnaas is in no way associated with politics. De Beers departed from the town in 2015 when their diamond mining operations slowed down and it was around that time that the population dropped from 1000+ to roughly 120. We spoke to one of the locals who has lived there for 20 years and he said that there is a large underground lake which could potentially supply the town with water for up to five years if necessary. The name of the town means 'sweet water'. Where their current water supply comes from, I do not know. Thank you for coming along to Koingnaas. 😊🚗

Ostrich meat has become a very popular alternative to traditional red meat because of its low fat content, so the possibility exists that those ostriches are also farmed for their meat. We didn't see any actual farms anywhere we went in that area though, so I'm really not sure. The trailer homes are certainly not as common in SA as they are in the UK and even in the US. It looked like very comfortable and neat housing though, so certainly an alternative when housing has to be put up quickly and cost-efficiently. 🏘️ Thank you for the good wishes. 😊 Sonia and I would like to thank you for watching every video, we so appreciate that. We lived in caravaan's with, what were refered to as "leanto's(sections of walling fit together to for a kitchen living room and extra room)added on. We were standing against a hill with all the makeshift houses facing the white dunes that could be glips in some photo's. A long stretch of road ran down to the dunes with the clubhouse(were my dad tought me to play pool) on the left and inbetween the housing and the clubhouse, an airfield on the right. At the bottom, the road turned to the left and meandered along the coast in the direction of Kleinzee. A nice sandy road with some of the best "sloepe" for the best crayfish catching (big daddies not the stuff that are found on our PnP or Checkers stores). So wish you could have seen the then Koiignaas. To be honnest this Koiignaas is heartbreaking. 💔💔 Have a blessed Chrismas tomorrow and drive safe, be safe.

Hi Lovely Hosts, Am just confused by the spelling of this unique place. There are a few versions here. In the subject it is spelled Koingnaas, Trudie who lived here is spelling it two ways Koingnaas but also Koiignaas. There is also mention that it might be Koi!gnaas. And Edward’s version is Koiingas.

We understood from the shopowner that the second 'i' had fallen by the wayside in the last few years, not sure how long ago that was. The spelling of the town most definitely has an 'ng' in, but that's silent for the most part. The nameboard as one enters town, says 'Koingnaas'. I think people say it different and ultimately start spelling it differently too, probably more according to how they say it. 🤷🏼‍♂️😁

Hello to you! 🙋🏼‍♂️ We don't know for sure and all our info is based on chatting to locals while we were in town. They say that the diamond yield became too low for De Beers to continue and they therefore departed the town. 🤷🏼‍♂️ I have no doubt that there are still thousands of diamonds left, yet to be discovered. 💎 While there are still mining operations ongoing in the area, they appear to be on a much smaller scale than before. The potholes, yes. We didn't even notice them until we hit that really bad spot. @@DustBugsTravel you are correct. De Beers stopped their operations in Namaqualand by first closing down Oranjemund then Kleinzee and lastly Koiignaas. As far as I know, these mines were handed over or are still being handed over from De Beers to the deffirent communities. This however puzzles me as I know, with Namaqwaland Ventures atleast, that De Beers would buy the farm after Nama Vent detiremend that it was viable to mine, with the farmer still being able to farm but De Beers had the underground rights. I know however that the communities are still mining diamonds in those 3 towns with the lot at Kleinzee having the worst deal as Kleinzee were mined out totaly. Koiignaas were the last one to be developed by De Beers.

Sonia, as a linguist, may better understand than I do, why wrong spelling and pronunciation gets accepted. Koiingnaas was always spelled with two i's, and it recently lost one i. I am perplexed. I can be very dogmatic about language, as our teacing at school had been kinetically induced, the posterior is where I received applied English. My pet peeve is Awestroileuns that can say 'bundutec' but not 'bundutop.' I try to figure out why that is.

Yes I also noticed this year that the one "i" was removed and still don't know why
@DustBugsTravel
@DustBugsTravel Жыл бұрын
@Stoflus, Sonia actually chatted to people in town about this, but no-one could give us a definitive answer. 🤷🏼‍♂️ The consensus seems to be that, during the last twenty or so years, especially with the advent of social media and the Internet, the second 'i' got lost in translation and deliverance. Even the town sign as we entered, only has one 'i' as I'm sure you noticed, so I'm not sure exactly how recent a development this was. Even when I did a quick search online about Koingnaas and Koiingnaas, I couldn't find an explanation and came up empty.

Being somewhat slow on the uptake I assumed that Klein [Oqis] was a San or Khoi Khoi word until I heard it spelled out.

If we didn't chat to the owner, we would've most likely thought the same. He said that he gave his shop this name because he only has daughters and his businesses are his sons, therefore the 'oqis' is a play on 'outjies' in Afrikaans. He explained the spelling by saying that he put the 'q' in there in keeping with a lot of the words found in the Khoekoe language, spoken by the Nama people of the area. 🙂
