As we drove into Louterwater, the light drizzle created a serene atmosphere, setting the mood for the journey ahead. It was evident that this small town was bustling with activity, as we watched numerous trucks and tractors making their way to their destinations with loads of apples and pears on their way to be weighed and processed. Our excitement peaked as we approached the Granor Passi plant where the fruit is weighed and processed. The line of vehicles waiting to offload their fruit seemed never-ending. It was incredible to witness the sheer number of trucks and tractors, and we couldn't help but feel lucky to have stumbled upon this very interesting sight. After this awesome experience, we continued to explore the town and stumbled upon another exciting find, the old station being converted into a guesthouse. The potential for this unique accommodation option was evident and we could already envision that the finished product will be a pretty place. It was undoubtedly an excellent prospect for future trips to Louterwater. Just around the corner from the old station, we discovered the Kontrei Kombuis, a quaint restaurant that quickly caught our attention. Overall, our trip to Louterwater was an unforgettable experience, filled with breathtaking scenery and exciting discoveries. It's a destination that should be on everyone's travel list and we're happy to share some of what this charming town has to offer. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #easterncape #louterwater

My late grandfather worked at Lanko until his retirement. Unfortunately, he had to get another job, because farming alone couldn't sustain them during the drought in the 1980s. The farm is 13 km from Joubertina on the Kareedouw side. He took my parents, my sister and me on a factory tour of Lanko once. It was fascinating! I think it was in 1987.

Nice. So that station buildings and the house use to host Kontrei Kombuis before they moved to the new premises you visited here. Roxy the dog is now a seleb; she is raising a couple of ducks that Veronel the owner brought in.....hehe. Those apples is very nice I can promise you.....hehe. When Veronel use to stay in Misgund we use to go visit and stay on the farm where you literally drive through the apple orchards and we use to go pick apples left after picking season. On your way from Misgund to Louterwater there is Pear orchards on the left and there they also prepare new variants of pears for the export market. Most of the orchards belongs to the Du Toit group as far as I know; they are also in the Ceres area as well. Yea that apple express is long gone; hence why that road is deteriorating as a result of all the trucks. The farmers is fighting for a long time now to get the road fixed especially on the Eastern Cape side, but yea...... Anyway very interesting and loved the Video as it was a couple of years ago the last time I drove through the area.....

I thought you may enjoy the footage of Kontrei Kombuis, I had fun looking around there and was wondering about the dog toy as I entered, but soon saw who it belongs to! 😍🐶 I especially enjoyed the lighter collection, that was fun to see! It's great that the station buildings are now being renovated into a guesthouse, it's quite a big project! The area is very beautiful and it must be fantastic to live on a farm full of orchards. 🍏🍐 Interesting info about the new pear varieties. To our untrained eyes, we thought the majority of the orchards were apples, but we did see most of them from a distance. I so wish we could still see the Apple Express running! That road is super busy and those big trucks drive fast! 🚂😳 We appreciate you watching our video of Louterwater! 🚙🤩

@@DustBugsTravel In Dec with that heavy rain storm the restuarant flooded. The water come in from the garagedoors and went in through the restaurant. Luckily damages was not that bad. I was in the pear orchards with my friends now ex husband which is a manager of the Du Toit group and we had to go look at one of the dams and pumps and we took a drive between the pears and the new at the time variants....this was now a couple of years ago. It is very quit on the farms at night. Because there is not much electric street lights it can get very dark and you can actually see the stars. I once had to drive back from George to Misgund on that road in the early hours of the morning after my mom had to be admitted to hospital in George the afternoon. It was quit scary....hehe...especially with thick fog on top of Outenikwa pass....

Daar by hulle in misgund was meerindeels die rooi appels gewees. Anderster lewe daar.....😃.

This entire experience of and in the Langkloof was one big education for us too and we had so much fun learning about the fruit industry, which is clearly so much bigger than we could've ever thought or imagined! 🍏🚜 There were quite a few quirky items at Kontrei Kombuis and I thoroughly enjoyed walking around there! We're always so happy to be taking you along and showing you parts of South Africa you may not know and we certainly don't know. We loved finding the Apple Express tracks everywhere and thought it super cool that the old station buildings are being renovated, we loved that! 🚂🚙

Its a beautiful area. And so interesting to see where the apples get processed. I think the pears come little later in the season but could be wrong. Enjoyed seeing the old station, looking beautiful. So wish trains were still running. I am sure the ghosts of long forgotten trains still come through on some dark misty nights. I am glad Langkloof is getting some rain, they need it. Although it does make it difficult to film. Everything is so pretty! Really enjoyed.

Thank you! I'm glad you also enjoyed Louterwater! We had such a fun time checking out and following the transportation of the apples to the processing plant. 🚜🍎🍏 We didn't see nearly as many pears as apples, so you may very well be right and they do get picked at a different time of the year, I never thought of that! I know I shouldn't complain about the rain, it's just so irritating when I can't keep the lens dry and I do love filming out of the window! 🚙🌧️ I was very happy to see that someone has taken an interest to renovate and repurpose the old station buildings, they're really deserving of that! I can actually imagine the Apple Express coming through Louterwater on a dark misty night, you certainly painted that picture very well. With words this time! 🚂🌖

Hi you two! This is clearly a very hard working farming community. That long line of trucks is amazing. You are now becoming experts in tracing the Apple Express tracks even on wet gravel roads The old houses with the pillared stoepe always take me back to my childhood, but that was in the Ou Transvaal. Kontrei Kombuis is definitely on my list for whenever I would get that far from home. Thank you again for a beautiful and educational trip. For Sonia's sake I hope the sun comes out soon. I'll be waiting at the side of whatever road you decide to pick me up for the next trip. Keep safe!

We had such fun trying to figure out how the apple packing and transporting works and here in Louterwater we got a good, long look at the very long line of trucks and tractors, which fascinated us quite a bit! 🚚🚜 Kontrei Kombuis is such an authentic place and by this time we had come to expect that of the Langkloof region. Down-to-earth and salt-of-the-earth people and we so appreciate that in everyone we have the pleasure of meeting! You'll love it when you do visit this area, it's wonderful and something to experience at least once in one's life! I do hope you get the opportunity to do so soon! 🤩🚙 We were so happy for the rain, but it's so difficult to film and Sonia shivers very quickly! Luckily it wasn't too cool that day! 🌧️🥶 More wonderful places waiting for you to explore with us, be ready!

Love the video, love the Langkloof...time for my 4th road trip to the Kloof. Louterwater was the farm of Commandant Rademeyer, a hero of the 6th Xhosa War in 1834/5. Even the Cape Governor Sir Benjamin D'Urban mentioned Rademeyer for his brave actions against the enemy

You'll probably find that a lot of the farmers in the area have founded processing companies, and all those trucks come from various farms - some using their own one truck, others contracting it out to transport companies, and so on. That would explain the diversity of trucks outside the weighbridge. (Weigh, go in, offload, weigh before you go, and the difference is your tonnage delivered.) It could also just be one guy who decided not to farm, but just to buy crops and process them, but often farmers will "do it themselves" as above.
@DustBugsTravel

We have a slightly different take on the movement of the fruit, after having observed it for a couple of days in a few different villages. Granor Passi in Louterwater is the processing plant where the trucks and tractors were lined up with the crates of apples. 🍏🚜 Most, if not all, of the trucks were from transport companies contracted in for the picking season. The crates all have either the name Granor Passi or the names of farms (or groups of farms) on. As far as we know, all the farms in the region make use of central processing facilities. 🍎🚚It's incredibly interesting to watch these guys at work, picking season is a busy time of year for them! Thanks for coming along to visit the Langkloof with us! 🚙🤩

We were still stuffed from our pizza picnic on the side of the road in Misgund and we weren't even thinking about food in Louterwater! 😁🍕 The long line of trucks and some tractors was definitely the highlight for us in this fruity village, it was quite incredible to see! 🚚🚜🍎🍏 The stone building outside town, is actually a farmhouse. If you look carefully, the 'cross' on the roof is actually electrical poles and wires. If it were a church, I would've made a plan to go closer as we normally do when we spot a church. 💒 As far as I can remember, we didn't stumble upon any in Louterwater. Take-aways is indeed 'wegneemetes' in Afrikaans, you are 100% correct! 👌🏻 We shall see you again over the weekend and we look forward to it! 🤩🚙

We travel on gravel roads wherever and whenever we can and have never had any suspension or other issues with a Kwid, other than very creaky doors and one flat tyre from a nail in a campsite on our very first trip. One has to take it very slow though and sensibility must prevail at all times. There are many places in this beautiful country of ours where gravel is in much better shape than tar anyway. 🚙🤷🏼‍♂️ My darling wife is still not keen on being filmed and I have to respect that. We are Curtis and Sonia. 😁 It is a complete misconception that one can't drive on gravel roads with a sedan, provided it has relatively high ground clearance, one drives sensibly and takes it slow and we check all three those boxes. ✅ There is zero need for an off-road vehicle for the gravel roads we drive on. We have never caused even the slightest damage to any vehicle in 18 months and in 17 trips. 🚙 We've only had one flat tyre when we picked up a nail in a campsite on the second day of our first trip. The 5% of roads we're unable to navigate with the vehicles we drive, we don't mind missing at all. 🤷🏼‍♂️ We appreciate you watching our videos! 🤩👌🏻
