We had quite an adventurous trip to Oudtshoorn, enduring misty conditions on our drive through Robinson Pass, which obscured the scenic vistas, but we pressed on. Our stay at The Old Mill Lodge, just outside Oudtshoorn, left us thoroughly impressed, with the soothing sound of the river and the stunning natural beauty around us. The next morning, brimming with energy, we ventured into Oudtshoorn and were, despite the persistent rain, immediately captivated and enthused by the charming old sandstone buildings that lined the streets. It promised to be an incredible experience and indeed it was. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #westerncape #oudtshoorn

Thank you. Alphen aan den Rijn is a large town on the Rhine, between Utrecht and Rotterdam in Holland. The twinning is probably due to the fact that it incorporates what was previously the town of Oudtshoorn, and today there is a portion of Alphen ... that has "Van Oudtshoorn se Kerk" in it, with the streets around bearing names from the family. The Church is right next to the River. My wife and I visited the town, as she is a Van Reede Van Oudtshoorn and descendent of Baron Pieter. On our visit there she was able to lay flowers at the openjng to the crypt in the church in which some of her relatives from the 1600s are buried!

In 1943 the Priminister Field Marshal Jan Smuts allowed over 500 orphaned Polish children to settle in Oudtshoorn. I met one of these children (now an elderly man) recently, who said he had such an amazing time growing up in the farmlands of Oudtshoorn. He advised us to go there! There is a commemoration to the Polish orphans in the cathedral with the 4 bells, where there is a beautiful stained glass window of the Polish Madonna and the white eagle of Poland. I believe there is also a museum about the Polish children somewhere in Oudtshoorn. Amazing place, with really great buildings! Thank you so much for this video!

Thanks guys. My last time outdshoorn was spent sleeping in the back of a bakkie at the train station. Right next to a steam locomotive that was waiting to leave the next morning. Beautiful memories ❤❤❤

Hi guys a place I've heard so much about and have now seen the drive in was great though the mist .what can I say about your accommodation 5 star glamping not camping the golf cart made me smile next to the river aircon TV shower loved it plus the food looked great. I still drink rooibos tea and my daughter loves it .shame about kango caves but the camels reindeer and donkeys made up for it. The place was overflowing with stunning buildings. The cp Nel museum building was great I noticed on the corner stones the word esquire was used denotes he had a business I believe haven't seen it used in years loved the memorial and the old phone box .so many churches and I must agree the DRF Church of sand stone was truly magnificent!!! The synagogue complex was intriguing. And interesting how Yiddish and Afrikaans speakers could relate as a market trader in London I picked up a few words of Yiddish!!! The Catholic Cathedral looked space age to me .glad you got to the station loved the corrugated house s and the pallet factory was on a day scale the Ostriche emporium was top notch. Really enjoyed the trip to Oudstshorn and all the history well done Sonia for spotting the Drill Hall and the plaque with Cecil Rhodes. Thanks for taking me along cheerio till the next one

I think you might be mistaken about Langenhoven's grave. He and his wife are buried on their property in Oudtshoorn. The grave you visited in Pakhuispas, was the grave of Louis Leipoldt. The sandstone houses with what they call the 'broekie-lace' finishings around the roof and often on the side of the verandahs, dates from the ostrich boom era, when many ostrich products, mainly the feathers were exported to Hollywood. Because of the extravagance of their lives, many farmers went bankrupt after the boom was over. I love your program. Please keep it coming and travel safely.
@DustBugsTravel

I am most certainly mistaken, thank you for the correction! It was super interesting to see those sandstone houses and imagine what life was like in the Oudtshoorn of 100 years ago. Opulence and extravagance seemed to reign supreme! 🏡🦆

I think that rain follows you around! 😆💦The purple veld is so pretty. Arent those long sticks with the bags for popping over the ostriches head? Wow! The Old Mill is an awesome place. My late hubby and I would so have enjoyed a stay there, but i dont think it was around yet in our day. And right on the river, glamping. Couldnt be better. Yes, that game between All Blacks and Boks was not a good one. But let me not go there. Aha! Die ou reentjie het julle ingehaal, ne!!🤣🤣 Swartberg pass is a firm favourite with me. We were lucky to have sunny weather. How lovely to find camels, I love them too, and lamas. I have a face like a lama, or so I been told. That old telefoonhokkie is so cute! Yes, Oudtshoorn is beautiful. My ancestors on moms side come from here. Love the stone buildings. Lots of bittersweet memories of the many times hubby and I visited this town.

It for sure felt like rain will be our constant companion! 🤷🏻‍♂️🌧️ Those workers were busy with something else along the fence and were holding the bagsticks up in the air because the ostriches were coming for them. Our accommodation was fantastic and the setting absolutely perfect. 🏕️😍 The camels were a huge surprise! 🐪 I'm sure most of those memories are good ones. 😊

Hi you two! So you eventually made it into October, which was called by the writer C Louis Leipoldt "Die Mooiste Mooiste Maand." That does not mean that the sun should be shining all month long for it to be beautiful, as your fascinating video clearly shows. I hope the management of De Oude Molen will be ready to house the rush of visitors which will no doubt flood that place after watching your video of that magnificent resort in the beauty of nature. Your tent seemed quit comfy! The road through the rocky mountains to the Kango was uniquely beautiful. We saw relatively few ostriches but the camels an the goat family made up for that. The abundance of ostriches was well illustrated in the variety of ostrich leather and feather goods at the Ostrich Emporium. The old DRC is very impressive! The role religion played in the history of the town is clearly illustrated by the variety of old churches remaining, including a synagogue! It is so good to see the part of Jews in South African history recognised. (Btw. I think the first 'modern looking' church you drove by might have been the Reformed Church). Thank you Curtis and Sonia for sharing one of your most beautiful trips (if not THE most beautiful!) I'm ready to go on the next! Keep safe n the rainy weather!

Een man neemt zijn vrouw mee uit eten en … krijgt een adrem antwoord. You go Sonia 😜.

I think that you may have convinced many people that Oudsthoorn is a great place to move to after this video. Those sandstone buildings are incredible, the detail on the NG church building is nothing short of awesome. Definitely the highlight of all the buildings.The Cape Karoo Ostrich Emporium has lots of great products too. I also cannot recall how the Cango Caves looked previously, it sure is a tourist destination, a little bit similar to what one would find in the USA, speaking of which the golf buggy guiding you to your glamping accommodation is similar to what one sees over there at rv parks.
