S10's music has always been an exploration of her evolutionary path to mental health. From the age of 14, S10 was constantly in psychiatric hospitals. Some of the tracks on her debut EP ‘Antipsychotica’ and her second EP “Lithium” began with vocals that she recorded in her bedroom in a mental hospital using only the microphone on her headphones. For example, the song "Positief" talks about the 17 hours she once spent in solitary confinement in one such facility, and the “Lithium EP was so named because it was a drug she was prescribed to treat her bipolar disorder. In 2020, the Dutch radio station 3FM released a short documentary about the singer. The filmmakers followed S10 continuously throughout the year as she recorded music, performed live and talked about her path to peace and happiness. In a separate 2018 interview, she spoke at length about the shortcomings of treatment and social programs in the Netherlands and the costs associated with being in psychiatric institutions. "Children with psychological problems just don't have good help right now,’ she said. S10 has been involved in several events and initiatives dedicated to discussing and combating mental illness among the youth of the country, including organizing a concert for children with psychological problems. This song has some meaningful lyrics. You guys should hear this with lyrics.

I was walking around Washington DC today and listening to this song on repeat. The whole song is about sinking into your feelings, wallowing perhaps in the past and in our sadness but it was a great song to get lost in. Her voice is pretty haunting and it gave me the same kind of sad indie girl vibes as Growing Up is Getting Old from last year, which was my favorite song (VICTORIA was robbed and should have been top 5 for the beauty of that song.) This song is giving me similar vibes, so I can see it qualifying and maybe making top 10 if staged well.

This is a haunting melody that really grows on one after the second or third play. Deserves to do very well

I love her voice it’s just so captivating and the first time I listen to it I was just speechless and I didn’t expect Netherlands to send such a beautiful song & current song. At the moment, it’s my winner and I feel like internal selection are going to save this esc hopefully. Like you said I’m glad it’s not the typical Eurovision song/sounds like it’s made for Eurovision and it feels like something from her album and I feel like that really helps the song to stand out in Eurovision. I’m a bit worried about the staging visually wise cause it could get lost like Belgium in past years (2018 & 2019) but I’m sure it’ll be very good. Thank you Netherlands for such a good song in this weak Eurovision year. I feel like it’s already my first for me and I feel like it’ll just grow. Actually wrote S10 the song when she wasn’t selected yet. The people who always choose the songs for the Eurovision song contest didn’t know who sang this song. They only heard the song and they immediately picked this song.

I’m duch and I really love the fact that S10 sings this fully in Dutch. It’s a gamble a big one. But it’s what S10 always does she makes music in Dutch.

I absolutely get what you mean with it sounding authentic. That is basically the turnaround that the Netherlands made x years ago by asking Anouk to represent us. Since then every artist that was asked / selected (we don’t have a national song contest anymore, thank God) was doing what they do best ie being the artist they are and doing the music they love. Even though last years entry didn’t so well the one thing you can’t ignore is the fact that it was a song that totally was his own artistic vision and connected with his authentic self. Like you, it wasn’t my favourite but I could see where it came from, it’s influences and I loved it that this side of multicultural Netherlands was represented. And like you I am at a loss why the U.K. simply doesn’t get it that this is the way to do Eurovision. Imagine London Grammar being the entry for the U.K., a name I drop for good reason because S10’s song reminds me of them. About here name: S10 comes from her real name which is Stien with tien being the word for the number 10. You pronounce “tien” as in ChrisTINE (the part in capital letters but with a silent E). Put the S in front of 10 and you get her name 😃

I looooooooooove this!!! After listening to this song, I felt I was brought to a different dimension. It was THAT good. Idk if you've heard about this Dutch Indie Pop band HAEVN, same feels as well. I suggest listening to their Eyes Closed album. Anyway, yeah, this song has so much potential because it sounded authentic and not trying hard to impress everyone. S10's out there to perform at the grand stage at Turin and doesn't give a f*ck about what people say about her song. You've mentioned UK... LOL 2017 UK entry was my favorite. I think the reason why think this entry’s going to do well is it’s authenticity as you accurately spotted. Look at last year: top 2 jury Switzerland and France, top 2 televote Italy and Ukraine, all 4 song in native languages written by artists themselves rather than having team of Swedish producers trying to get Eurovision formula right. So I’m really liking this trend of Europe valuing authenticity, something UK need to start doing. Plus, the video already has 600k views in just one day, proving its already being received really well!

Wow, that was by far the very best review I heard (as I like the song so much I listened to about 30 yt reviews). S10 writes and sings themes like depression, anxiety, separation close to her heart. She is just giving a quality song to the public and will see how far it will come. It was nice to see that your happy face connected with the song after some seconds and that you are a deep listener.

I have this song on a loop, I looooove it! Totally agree that it just feels like honest/authentic music, not artificially made just for eurovision - not that that's always a bad thing, that can be done right, too. It's fun how it really makes people immediately want to sing along with the catchy oooh aaaahs and so on. Saw many reactors immediately do that :D I love singing along to the song so much that I even tried making a singable translation into my language, as I can't yet pronounce or remember the dutch well enough :D

Over here in the Netherlands, Dutch artists can send in songs to a commision board selected to review and then decide, more or less unanimously, that 'this or that song/artist' will go to Eurovision. It's almost completely SONG-based, rather than artist-based, i.e. where an artist is chosen and then a song is written. Since a couple of years, artists send in songs they wanna compete with, and then one song is chosen on a basis of several criteria, i.e. quality and credibility etc. It's an internal selection but like I said, not Artist-based. Sofar it's proven pretty successful :p

S10 stands for Stien (10=tien in Dutch, pronounced like "teen". Stien den Hollander (Stien the Dutchman) was in her youth plagued by mental issues like depression and psychosis and was admitted to a mental institution. She is only 21 and lived through things many people will not even have to live through in their entire lives. Her repertoire reflects that. She lives by hope and she's doing allright now. She also gives hope by music to youngsters with mental issues by giving a free concert for them during the COVID lockdown.

I was pleasantly surprised by the song! As a Dutchie, I know S10 is a great artist, also when it comes to live performances. This song really blew me away, especially because of the lyrics and emotional voice. Even my mom liked it a lot (and we usually disagree!). If it has good staging, and her vocals are strong, it could perhaps end up in the top 10 this year. I think it's a grower, and even if you don't speak Dutch, you can still feel it! You will remember the melody. I'm probably very biased, but it might be my nr 1 Eurovision song this year (so far). I usually don't like our entries much (except for Arcade).

Hey Shane, great reaction as always. Due to work, I had to wait 2 full days before I could sit down and listen to this and do my reaction. I really enjoyed the song and I agree with quite a lot of your assessment. It is probably not instantaneous, but the melody is fairly easy to remember. I am thinking the success of this at Eurovision will depend on the staging. Great staging could really see this fly, but if they get the staging wrong I could see this fall a bit flat with the voters. Hopefully, they get the staging right as I think this does deserve to do well.

I've seen the live performance of this song and I can't really tell what the difference is between the studio performance and the live performance. So the live performance shouldn't be a showstopper. She's truly a great artist with a fabulous voice. Angel like and at the same time a little bit haunting. But then again she's been through a lot and you can hear that, she puts her soul into her music. Heard the song for the first time a couple of days ago, goosebumps. Played the song over and over again. And it's getting better every time. I'm really pleased that again we didn't chose an arrived artist but went for quality. I get you on the authenticity thing, that does seem to be becoming more and more prevalent in Eurovision... not tailoring a song for Eurovision even if it is written for Eurovision. I had a little look into the artist before the song was released but didn't really have expectations. Being an internal selection and released now I can't see it being changed to include English (and agree it doesn't need it). I don't think it will have a problem getting into the final, and being in the first semi there's a little extra time for the ear-worm to get into people's heads. I thought it was quality but not pressing for my own top 10 on first listen... but it is a song I have found easy to put on repeat and just sink into. There's something almost entrancing about it. I think it's easily left side in the final and top 10 contender if the staging is done right (and I have a good feeling about that)

With regards to this year's entry, I didn't know her style beforehand, I did not even know the artist. After I heard she would be singing in Dutch I was worried, but still openminded. When I finally heard the entry, I was gobsmacked - it's sooo good. It's very much in the same vein as Duncan Laurence's Arcade, i.e. a sad song with deeper meaning, but personally I fall in love with songs like this - been a Hooverphonic fan for a couple of years, loved their entry last year. In the current playing field... I think we'll probably reach the final, doubtful whether we'll win especially in the current European climate (ahem *war* ) it's actually quite likely to think we can reach top 15, if not top 10 at least? :)

I think I understand what you're trying to say. Let's compare it to movies; if you want something to get you fired up, and just straight up enjoy it with a smile on your face, you watch The Fast and the Furious. But something like Interstellar is not something that'll reward you immediately. But it will have you pay attention because of the depth of it. You need to rewatch it to make sure you fully understand the meaning and beauty behind it. And this song is like Interstellar. You really need time to fully learn to appreciate it.

Her name is Estien, pronounced in English as Esteen. Tien means ten in Netherlandish. In Nederland as we call it we do not call it plural anymore like in English talking people. Since the countries Belgium and Luxembourg became independant de Nederlanden became Nederland but the English talking still call it lands and not land. Further you keep calling the people of Netherland Dutch which is not accurate as well. In the north of the US there is a community which they call Pensilvanian Dutch. Guess wgich old European language they speak? From which country? Exactly, Germany because Deutch meabs German in the German language, Like many other foreign words the Englisgh talking made it Dutch in strad of Deutch, like Breukelen became Brooklyn, Haarlem became Harlem and van Coevorden became Vancouver. to name a few. So please do not call us German abymore because we are not. We are Netherlandish, Hollandic or Batavarians.

I love S10 and hope she does well. I do agree, the UK is definitely capable of producing a winner. There are many amazing artists in the UK, but the UK tries too hard with super poppy, typical Eurovision songs.

So I’m Dutch and I have been listening to her music for some time now, I am happy because it’s a good song but kinda disappointing because some of her songs are so much better to me. Still like the song tho! Her discography is very diverse. like she has rap, hiphop pop rock and then these kind of ballads.

I am so non-plussed by this over-hyped song. I ignore other artists views on the song and try and listen with fresh ears. I listened at work using up non-wifi mbs as I was eager to find out more. I was sorely disappointed and have no intention of listening to it outside the semi final and probably final. When you say it wasn't written for Eurovision - I think this is trying to be so non-Eurovision that it's slyly very `Eurovision`. It's like poor person's modern Belgium.
