Hey i want to create this cover for my truck, 98 f150 flareside. Not a square bed. Also wider near cab. Its nice but seems not compatible with every bed cover so far... So best idea is to create one. Your video will be helpful. Piano hinges and aluminium angles are a most. I dont dig the one-piece of wood, since i need to carry stuff through the roof. Maybe a trifold since retractable is not possible with wood. Painted wood is not resistant to weather, thats why you use vinyl? There's "bate piedra" in my city that looks great and i purchased a spray gun off amazon. Pretty cheap, does the job and its resistant paint. I would love to make a video and tag you once its done. Your video has inspired me.

I’m glad to hear! One of the main reasons to use vinyl was yes because of the elements, I will be making a different one in the near future though, not because this one won’t hold up it’s just I want to improve on the design. What I plan on changing is using a stainless steel piano hinge since mine has started to rust, and I would actually like a painted bed cover so I will coat the wood in fiberglass and paint it, aside from that maybe adding lift struts.

@@madmike_9343 sounds like a great idea! Im still for someone with the right tools to do the work for me with the wood. Of course painted in black will look awesome with red, my truck has bi color. Piano stainless hinge is a must. Struts are a great idea to keep it up, but the way it opens. How has it worked for you? It looks weird to be wide tall as a inverted V. Retractable covers looks like the best but there's no way that can be reproduced with wood. Is there anything better than vinyl? What about tarps? Painted cover is great but I'm thinking about covering holes so no water gets in. I'm still designing this...
@madmike_93434 жыл бұрын
Eduardo, so I did try air struts off camera but I just couldn’t make it work(the angle of the wood vs my wheel hubs) so my plan is to buy an ARE hinge it will have better lateral support . I’ve toyed with a tri fold concept but instead of it folding on top it would fold inside itself(complicated of course) you might wanna consider using aluminum 1/8 thick, it’s definitely strong enough and easy to cut with a jig saw. I’d stay away from tarps, in my experience they are not UV resistant.

Thanks man! If you do this I’d recommend using stainless hinges and coating the wood once your done. I took mine off because I shaved my tailgate and added a wing but I plan to make a different one in the future

M! Great vid. Staples and glue = simple and brilliant. Vinyl covers many sins. I'm redoing my 16ft boat interior. Your patch job is good. You can hide it with row of silver round head upolstery tacks. (That's what I'd do). Helpful vid when I get to bed cover for my mazda B. Cheers

Thank you for the video, I'm still thinking about mine. Maybe letting it overhang on top of the rail useing the aluminum angle supports and latches as you did. I would rather have it flush like you did but I'm wondering how ro seal it. But great job, thanks for the ideas. God Bless.
@madmike_93435 жыл бұрын
Rob Knight, if you go this route you can use camper tape. It’s sticky so you can put it on the angle and the foam will seal against the plywood.
@lucky2knight5 жыл бұрын
Thank you I'll do that, but I was thinking a seal on top attached to the cover to seal the space between the plywood and the truck.
@Captleemo3 жыл бұрын
If you end up not being happy with the vinyl have you considered coating the cover with something like Line X bed liner? It comes in different colors. Ive seen whole trucks painted with that stuff and it looked pretty good.
@madmike_93433 жыл бұрын
That’s a good idea, I actually took the cover off since I shaved my tailgate, I am planning a different design. I hope to either have a roll on vinyl cover or a flat one but painted to match.
@stevezolina31715 жыл бұрын
In the beginning, I was confused as to what your plan was with the angle. It does look nice how it sits however. My question is this, how much structurally is the cover sitting on top of the angle?
@madmike_93435 жыл бұрын
Not much, I think it has an even weight because of the piano hinge. it hasn't broke this whole time. if anything you can add fiberglass resin to make it stronger. I might do a part 2 to this and do the whole thing in fiberglass just to paint it,.
@willwork2fish2612 жыл бұрын

How do you think raptor liner would have worked spraying on the plywood? Get rid of the vinyl all together I feel like in the sun being black the adhesive would probably bubble up ?
@madmike_93432 жыл бұрын
So yes and no, the bed cover lasted 1 years but the problem was the plywood, it held on to moisture, I took it off because of the hinge rusting and the plywood warping a bit by the tailgate. If I was to do it again, I’d buy really thin plywood (like 1/16 ) and stack them using fiberglass resin to make some waterproof plywood, I want to make another one that folds but don’t know when I will.

@madmike_93432 жыл бұрын

Did the plywood sag over time?
@madmike_934313 күн бұрын
@@jimmycecil1287 I did have a sag by the tailgate about 1/2in drop, which can be mitigated by angle iron or a bar fixed on the tailgate. The other thing I would change is the hinge, finding a stainless piano hinge would be the way to go. I did end up removing it like 3 years later because I wanted to do a.l tailgate handle delete.

How you keep water out the bed of the truck 😮
@madmike_9343 Жыл бұрын
Well, I don’t have the bed cover on anymore since I flushed the tailgate didn’t have any way to open it at the time, so I just pulled it off but when I did have it on very little water would enter but if you really wanted to seal it I can only imagine some weatherstripping would be way to go attach it to the edge of the truck, so it would align with the bed cover
