If you have a homestead of any kind, failures are inevitable. And the beginning of a new year is the perfect time to create action plans on how to prevent missteps in the coming year.
In this podcast episode, I'll share my 4-step Homestead Reset Framework that I use for figuring out why certain aspects of my homestead failed, and how to make it better in the coming year.

Its really good to know that you run out of time too! I agree there is so much to learn if something doesn't go the way we planned, if we keep that in mind it can be a very productive journey!

Last year was a tough year for you with all that rain. I was in Cheyenne Wyoming during a couple of your storms and saw the flooding. Our area was much different. We were in a drought. I had to figure out how to water my gardens while I was gone for 2 weeks. Life happened. The gardens were watered and so were the weeds. I could never catch up with the weeds. My yields were down. It’s a new year. I’m researching new watering methods and better weed control. Happy homesteading everyone.

In the drought years here in far north California, I had a row garden, and put in an irrigation system of quarter inch line down each row and only watered at ground surface and not in the air, as in sprinkling. Sure, after spring began, the moisture in the ground grew weeds between my rows. I hoed a few times. Daily hoeing is preferred, 'cause then it doesn't seem so overwhelming. After a while, there were no more weeds because between the rows isn't irrigated. It stays dry (we have no rain in summer), so my hoeing was over for months. Or use Herrick Kimball's system called Minibed Gardening. I put down one huge sheet of used 11ml plastic and anchored it down securely, and every 2 feet put a square frame of pine boards 30 x 30 inches, short rebar driven into three corners to stabilize frame, cut out the plastic square in the middle of frame to the soil, where I planted my vegetable garden. I cut and framed and rebarred and planted 23 beds. Herrick has over a hundred. . .and you will have no weeding. Purchase used billboard plastic or silage tarping online. There are whole businesses that sell it, and that's all they sell. Weeding inside the minibeds is so little, it can't be counted! I had decided to give up vegetable gardening because of the weeds, until I discovered Herrick's method.

Yes!! Taking action is something I’m doing this year! Last year was super tough for a lot of us! I had a baby, broke my ankle and with all the thing they seemed to slip out of my grasp. I’ve already started the changes! Im like you and when I have it in my mind I have to do it then or I’ll probably forget or it will just be on my list for a long time. Thank you for that encouragement that I’m not alone! 💕

My garden would have done really good if we didn't get the flood here in Vermont, so I do hope that we don't get flooded again. I do know that I will be changing WHERE some of my garden is planted. My potatoes rotted, so I will be moving the potatoes to higher ground. Thank you very much Jill for giving me a bunch of NEW ideas for this coming year. God Bless

I think people need to remember that you don’t start at the top of something and the journey has many twists / turns and hills to navigate

I used to tell the kids that F doesn't mean failure - it means figure it out and find how you learn. Sometimes it was because they didn't put the time into it or put it off, sometimes is that they just didn't understand what they were being to taught and had to use different way to learning. Sometimes it was because they didn't understand the step before and needed to go back to where they understood things and have someone else (who understood the step) help them. I know one teacher wasn't thrilled that I told my one daughter that.. to her F was failure. it wasn't and it isn't. I find my girls are really good at what working and understand that failure isn't the end - that it is just a beginning. Figuring out why without getting buried in the idea that you failed is a skill to learn!

Okay, love that u put these out so early in the morning, and love thought provoking content! Here is my issue and maybe something u have insite on. Whenever i listen intently to helpful things like this my mind will light up and think yes, yes, i will do xyz....next thing i realize i am thinking my own thoughts and not listening. I am starting to realize i do this in conversation with people, people i enjoy and value, but i find myself realizing the same thing, dang, i wasn't listening i was thinking about something they said and stopped listening. Here i can stop and back up, great, but in conversation thats not always possible. What is that? For me it's usually productive thoughts of excited ideas. But i wonder since ur a deep thinker maybe u can explain this or how this pertains to our lives. 🤷🤔😏 Thanks Jill, i so appreciate your content that makes me feel connected.

I totally agree action is the cure 😻 it makes you feel amazing so much wait lifted when it is done , even if it doesn’t work out like you wanted. 🙆‍♀️

Okay, i gotta ask, how can u add fresh barn clean out on a root crop now like potatoes, and it b safe for this years growing season? I ask that because of how i have learned to understand using barn clean out. I don't think ur talking about goat or rabbit barn clean out? As i understand those r not hot manures and they do not need time to decompose like cow, chicken or horse manure, which i am just guessing that is what u were talking about? I am probably too cautious using my chicken barn clean out, but i live in MN so u and i have the same brutal cold winters and short growing season, so i would love your insight on using different types of barn clean outs and safety in using them. I keep all my chicken barn clean out composting all growing season then feel safe that it has composted down enough to topdress my beds with it in the fall. Even then i worry wind may blow some of it away, especially if we don't get enough snow. But i know u r very knowledgeable and love composting so i would appreciate ur opinions on this.
