In episode 1 of Local Brew, Matt heads to Lewiston, Maine, to visit Baxter Brewing Company. There he meets the owner, Luke Livingston, to talk about craft beer, the mill and his journey from beer fanatic to brewery owner. Then Matt rolls up his sleeves and helps Baxter's head brewer Ben Low make a batch of Stowaway I.P.A. After that it's off to the canning line where Matt gets a lesson is how to can beer and almost smashes his face. Then Luke and Matt head to the tasting room to sample some of Baxter's fine craft beers, including their then un-released, un-tested summer beer, Celsius Summer Ale. After the tasting is done, Matt heads to one of Lewiston's favorite watering holes, DaVinci's Eatery, to talk beer with the people who it best - the locals. There he meets some of Lewiston's finest, hangs out with the crew of Baxter Brewing, steals a nibble of Luke's famous Pamola Pale Ale mussels! Yes it's a about a local micro-brewery, local people, and great craft beer in this episode of Local Brew!

I think you should come to Louisville, KY, we have an awesome craft brew scene here that needs to be lightened to the mainstream, not discounting other credible craft breweries throughout the country! Too many to catch them all, of course, but each one, each tour, each taste of new brew brings a smile to my face than can't be rivaled by anything else in the world. I love beer!

Unfortunately, it makes sense. Mainstream America still mostly drinks tasteless light lager epitomized by Bud / Miller / Coors (roughly 93% of market). Is it any wonder that the mainstream media has this bias, too? It was a marvelous show, and the host was engaging and had an infectious enthusiasm.

Learn something new every day. Didn't think that Lewiston was the 2nd largest city in Maine, would have thought Bangor was. Certainly seems like Bangor is bigger than Lewiston when driving through either town.

What a great show!! I hope you find a way to get this out into the public even if big cable isn't biting. Netflix? Any chance you'll head north to see what Canada has to offer? Us Vancouverites love our craft beer and would host the hell out of you and your show. Cheers!

does this brewery make its own cans or they buy cans from someone? (if they make cans, how do they do that?)
@localbrewtv
@localbrewtv 9 жыл бұрын
They buy the cans from an outside company. This is pretty standard in the beer industry. We don't know of any brewery that makes their own cans.

really cool video always enjoy watching craft breweries. I'd hate to be devils advocate but the one thing i don't agree with is them using cans. The by-products aluminum produce are nasty. it actually benefits the environment if you pay the extra to ship glass. At my local brewery touring there, Half Pints Brewery, they've told me that cans have the most impact on the environment. recycling cans is less efficient then glass 70% for cans close too 100% glass. And aluminum produces red mud, or sludge as a byproduct which can cause a lot of problems in the ecosystem, ruining a lot of land that otherwise would be suitable for agriculture, so i'd encourage the owner to do his homework because he may actually believe it but it's not true.
@bitoverrate2753
@bitoverrate2753 8 жыл бұрын
+Bitover rate Compare that to glass which is non toxic and has no by products that cause widespread damage.
@localbrewtv
@localbrewtv 8 жыл бұрын
+Bitover rate You're probably correct that glass is more efficient and less harmful when it's recycled. The reason this brewery owner uses cans, and says that cans are "better for the environment", is because they tend to get recycled more often than glass.
@bitoverrate2753

I still respect them as a brewery because i like what they are doing, I`d just recommend they look into the Ajka alumina plant accident. it`s great they want to make environmental decisions, i just think it`s important to do your homework.. At the same time, it`s a big investment so when you choose cans, then you are basically stuck with them. I mean sure cans are lighter so you use less fuel transporting them. But the real problem is all the byproducts and how harmful they are when recycled. Both aren`t perfect i mean cans get crushed and bottles get smashed before they make it there. So it`s a toss up, however even if cans are recycled more then that just means more toxic sludge.

How bout we try to make aluminum can recycling a less toxic process instead of abandoning cans?
@brettthackeray9263
@brettthackeray9263 6 жыл бұрын
Bitover rate, that is very interesting information! I had no idea that processing aluminum was worse than glass. I live in Montana and we cannot recycle glass in the whole state - it costs too much to move the glass to the nearest recycling center. But we can recycle aluminum (but now I know the downside to that!). The two main reasons cans have taken off so much in the craft brewing scene are 1) cans are allowed almost everywhere while glass isn’t, and 2) cans protect beer better than glass (light damages beer). I believe it is also cheaper to can than to bottle. Cheers!

If that's not the biggest crock I can't see what is... I think the public would love a brew show. Would get more people into drinking better beer and even getting into brewing themselves.

cans are better for environment, but not the plastic six pack rings :(

Actually the six pack rings they use at Baxter Brewing are "made from #4 recyclable polyurethane and are 100% photodegradable (they break down after prolonged exposure to the sun’s rays)" (source: www.baxterbrewing.com/green-practices/). Thanks for watching!
