Isuzu TurboDiesels are a good swap for 1st generation Honda insights. I’m specifically talking about the engine that was offered in the Isuzu Gemini/I-Mark Turbo Diesel, or the Diesel Chevette. Also, the 2.4L I4 Mercedes-Benz Diesel that was offered in the 240D. Those are extremely tough little engines, and you can turbocharge them, preferably with something smaller than the KKK turbocharger used for the OM617, so the same one used with the Isuzu’s would make a good fit.

i absolutley love what you are doing! You talked about Supercharging or Turbocharging the little Kubota diesel, but why not both? let the Turbocharger feed air into the Supercharger, because of the initial Supercharger boost the Turbo will spool quickly and will maybe produce more boost than on the "Turbo only" setup you tried.
@WildWildWeasel

Twincharging a small diesel...never thought I'd wanna do that myself but now I want lmao
@ThePaulv12
@ThePaulv12 6 ай бұрын
A good idea but could be tricky to set up. Once the turbo comes on boost you really need a spring loaded flap to bypass the blower. It needs to be adjusted in a way allows a smooth transition so there's some boost from the supercharger and some from the turbo before the turbo takes over the full duty. Also there's the possibility at low RPM the blower will open the bypass flap unintentionally backfeeding boost so it could be a bit tricky as mentioned. Detroit Diesel 2 strokes that have a turbo, still retain the blower (the blower is not a supercharger in Detroit Diesels but it is the same blower that is used as a supercharger in hot rods). These turbo versions have a special blower called unimaginatively, a by-pass blower. The bypass arrangement is built into the blower body and is unique to the turbo variants. The blower lobes still rotate though but the by-pass blower saves 30% engine pumping losses by being bypassed. EMD 2 stroke Diesels if turbocharged have a hybrid centrifugal supercharger/turbocharger arrangement. At low rpm the compressor is crank driven but as RPM rises an exhaust turbine starts driving the compressor via an overrun clutch. In certain circumstances like high load and low RPM both the crank and the exhaust turbine drive the compressor but these are mid sized Diesel engines with a max RPM of around 1000.
@RobMcFlash
@RobMcFlash 6 ай бұрын
@@ThePaulv12 i would try this setup without bypassing the supercharger. Keep it simple, maybe its not the most efficient way but iam pretty sure it will work. There are twincharged diesel setups wich are using super &turbocharger without bypassing der supercharger (banks Power did a setup like this)
@KarriKoivusalo
@KarriKoivusalo 6 ай бұрын
@@ThePaulv12 There is no need to have a switchover of boost. If the turbo feeds the supercharger, it basically only sees a larger engine and works as usual and if the turbo is too big for the engine right now, you pretty much must feed the supercharger to keep the operational point on a good spot on the compressor map. The other way around it would indeed be much more problematic. The biggest issue to consider is that as chargers are pressure multipliers, you might get pretty crazy boost levels if you're not careful. Even then, the wastegate would work pretty much normally though. However the supercharger bypass would reduce drag load on the crank at high RPM.

I don't think superchargers are designed to have hot air pumped into them. It would play havoc with the seals and lubrication.

Before I had a lift I came up with a system for under-car work and while it was no lift, it was a lot better than crawling around on your back or belly. When I hit 40 I started to come away with bruises on my back every time, so things had to change. I bought 4 of the truck style 6 ton jack stands, then I put a pair of wooden 4x4 blocks under the legs to give that extra 3.5" of lift and it made it so I could sit up under the car on a creeper, plus the stands in my opinion were actually more stable on the blocks (not advice, do at your own risk). I pulled a front drive engine out the bottom this way and actually had to lower the car a bit to get the trans floor jack high enough to drop it out it was so high. It worked fantastic and no bruises on my back and shoulders. Poor man's mid lift.

Here in France, we have a class of vehicle called "Quadricycle" which needs the same driving requirements as moped and are submitted to the same engine regulation. Displacement of a spark ignition engine for such a vehicle must be inferior to 50cc but can be up to 500cc if it's a diesel. For reliability issues, all those vehicle are either electric or diesel because you cannot power a 400kg vehicle with only 50cc. Guess what powers the Aixam quadricycles! A two cylinder 482cc Kubota! They sound very similar to your little Honda, are very noisy, especially the old ones and shake like crazy. I love the idea of having fun building and driving fuel efficient beasts with tiny engines. Keep up the great work! As a french driver, I can tell we had lots of fairly light cars that were quite low on power that are a blast to drive especially on windy roads.

I have always HAD to make my own exhaust systems. Like, where are you gonna buy a kit for a 1974 Jeep CJ5 with a Cummins and a DANA Super 18 transfer case. That reduces room between it and the frame for the exhaust. For the curoius why i didn't stay with the stock Dana 20 here's why. 1 I did a spring over axle conversion and the driveshaft is short (using stock one) and the angle would have been extreme. By using the 18 or drops the rear shaft by almost 6", but it's offset so i used a dana44 from a 67 that was offset. 2 I wanted to use the Saturn Overdrive that goes in the PTO port on the back of the transfer case. It's a long post, but i figure guys that watch Jimbo want ALL the details. LOL. Jimbo, love your videos and your attitude not to mention patience. Merry Christmas everyone! 🎄

Don't expect boost to add power to a diesel unless you add more fuel. This is generally done with a diaphragm or actuator that moves the rack to add more fuel when pressure is applied. It will clean up the exhaust though.

Congrats! Heart Transplant done! Just staple & sew the details up & on with the experiments. Boy those two resonant frequencies of the exhaust really trumpet & exho off the objects that you pass! I agree, muffler needed. Great show, thanks.

Muffler idea, get the longest straight through glass pack available preferably by thrush at the auto store. You'll be amazed how quiet it will be on the diesel little to no restriction.

Good job! Wish we could have seen the speedometer clearly to see how fast it was going. The gearbox seems perfect for the motor. Waiting for next weeks video.
